Volume 15 Chapter 41: Gamble
Volume 15 Chapter 41: Gamble
The solemn breath Keith had slowly turned deep as he saw the cindermaw go limp. One final attack. It broke through the earth sphere, trying to take one with them.
Scarlet quickly rushed over, but he waved his hand, "Don't touch me. I'm hot to the touch." His armor was definitely heated to the utmost degree by the flames. He used his ice magic, slowly cooling his body off.
Once he did, Scarlet quickly hugged him, "Are you not burned?" Every attack the cindermaw unleashed, Keith took the brunt.
"I'm fine." His armor and robe had taken the brunt of the cindermaw's flames. He was fine; his armor was slightly melted while the robe was burnt to a crisp.
"It's getting hot." Ice quickly formed to cool him, but it was melting way too quickly.
"Here, you can cover with me." Scarlet quickly brought up her robe and brought him in.
"Let's go and get that lily." They couldn't forget about their objective. Time was the issue. While they continued to move, they didn't notice the shadows looming over them.
"So this is the flamecrest lily." They stared at a vibrant flower before them. There was a special flame.
"With this, we can save Selk." Scarlet had a relieved expression. As the group was about to take it, that was when the shadows struck!
"What the?!"
"Who are you?"
Keith and Valgros immediately sprang into action as they blocked a few shadows. However, the shadows dodged them and aimed for one point. That alone caused everyone to freeze.
“Bastard!” Keith fired his lightning without hesitation. However, when he did so, the assassins quickly retreated, trying their best to escape the situation. But Valgros and the others chased after them like hunting dogs.
“Enough, we can’t get them.” There were more pressing matters to deal with.
“...No.” Scarlet fell to her knees as she stared at the whithered flower. They had used strong water to quench the flame-crest lily. The only hope for Selk's recovery...gone like that?
“There has to be more around here?!” Tharaziel roared. There had to be someplace they could…
“No, we don’t have enough time.” Even if they tried to search for another, it would be impossible. They didn't have enough leeway to do this. Plus, they would have to fight a cindermaw for it again, which would take a lot longer.
The only thing that could save Selk was destroyed like this. What were they supposed to do now? However, “We’re not giving up!”
“Eh?”
“We’re going to gamble!” Keith roared.
“Eh?!”
“There’s no way we can lose hope now!” Keith groaned.
…
“They should be back.” Lilith and the other waited by the castle gates. Today was the day they should be returning. And that was when they saw the carriage returning.
“Keith, have you brought back the flower?”
“...Not exactly.”
The others froze. You didn't bring back the flower? What was going to happen now? Not bringing it back was akin to failure.
"I have a plan." The group entered Selk’s room where he then summoned the cindermaw.
“We’re going to use the cindermaw.”
“You want to do what?” Feed her the cindermaw?
“We’re gambling here.” Keith's expression showed how uncertain he was, “The cindermaw has been eating the lily for all its life. The abilities from the flamecrest should be inherited.” If it ate only that, then that means the flamecrest lily should have infused into the blood.
“...That could work.” Yukiko thought about it, and it did make sense. Sometimes, monsters would inherit abilities from the food they ate. For example, a fire monster eating a fire fruit to get potent flame resistance.
“But monster blood is dangerous.” There was a risk in using it. Monster blood was quite poisonous. It could even kill someone if you don't know its effects.
"That's why you have to monitor it, Grandma Yukiko."
"But the risks are still great." Yukiko then turned to Scarlet, "The choice is yours. Do you want to do this?"
“I will trust you.” Scarlet took a big sigh, “Let’s use the blood.”
“Understood.” Keith and the others nodded, and that was when he fed her the blood. The first thing that occurred was that her body was slowly glowing from the speed at which she was doing so. A clash between the two poisons. Slowly, Selk opened her eyes, and the moment she did,
“Who are you?” Selk muttered as she stared at the people that were around. But that was when someone went to hug her,
“SELK!” The tears that she had slowly exploded. All the emotions that she had at this moment instantly exploded as she hugged her tightly without a thought.
“...Let’s go out now.” Keith didn’t mind as he quickly pushed everyone out of the room. It was giving them their alone time.
