Volume 15 Chapter 39: Time Ticking Down
The next day, Keith and the others ate their breakfast quickly before setting off to the next layer. Slowly, the territory's environment began to change. More flames and a deeper hue of dirt were present as they entered the next section. Crossing that layer, Keith's eyes widened.
“It just spiked up so quickly.” Keith stood in front of Scarlet, taking the brunt of the heatwave. Heading into the sixth layer, the heat didn't spike up so much. It was comparable to a slow simmer. This was now a slow boil.
"Water."Tharaziel stuck out his tongue as he started to sip on his jug. It was a large and deep gulp. Valgros warned, "Be mindful of how much you drink. If we run out of water, then it'll be an issue." Water was going to be key.
"It's hot!" The water was turned into boiling water.
"How are you feeling?" Keith was focused on Scarlet. She seemed fine for the most part from her expression. But the sweat slowly dripping down said otherwise.
"I'm fine."
"Here," Keith then placed a piece of ice on her cheek. That block of ice slowly melted. However, the cooling sensation caused Scarlet's expression to soften.
“You’re able to use ice magic?” Valgros and Tharaziel were taken aback.
Keith nodded, “Mmhmm. I’m still training. But I have a good grasp of it now.” He tossed some ice to the other two as well. They were going to be in for a rough ride. But as they continued,
“I don’t think these robes are going to do much now.” It didn't matter if they wore them or not; an intense heat still engulfed everyone. It was like the sun was a block away from them.
“Roar!” Everyone's head darted over to the side. A giant group of boars towered over, prepared to charge at the group.
“We need to kill those monsters right now!” Valgros raised his blade, “It’ll make our travel easier.” Keith followed suit as he sliced the boar in half. Without any delay, the monsters were dealt with before they could have the chance to breathe one more breath.
“So why did we have to kill them?”
"For their fur. Its fire resistance is much higher than the ones we have on us." The monsters were living on a heat-infested land. Of course, they were capable of doing this.
“Won’t it be messy?”
"No. Use ice magic to cover it, and then it'll dry from the heat." It took a few seconds. Once they wore it,
“Cool.” Scarlet couldn’t help but mumbled.
“Let’s keep going.” With the upgrade, it was time to continue forward. But when they did so, they didn’t notice they were being eyed from afar.
“Madam Yukiko, how is Selk?” Lilith entered the room. While Keith and the rest headed out to get the flower, she was on watch. Right now, Selk's complexion slowly turned pale.
"They need to get it as quickly as possible." Yukiko raised her magic onto her. Slowly, the pale complexion died down.
Keith and the others continued to wander a bit. As they walked, Tharaziel couldn’t help but wave his body, “Damn, this heat is roasting me alive.” Even when he obtained the ember boar’s skin to cover, the heat was only getting worse. Scarlet rolled her eyes, “We’re all suffering. We just need to suck it up and keep going.”
“Here, use this.” Keith tossed a block of ice over to him. But as it flew in the air, half of the ice slowly melted from the heat. But that was enough for Tharaziel to sigh in relief. Any ice was enough to cause them to do so.
“We’re getting close to the location.”
“And we’re here.”
“We should prepare ourselves.” Valgros held his hand on the sword. Keith had also taken out his halberd and was prepared. The group also prepared himself. Keith instantly got in front of Tharaziel and Scarlet as he blocked the fire that flew over. What was before them was a giant red lion encased with flames.
