Chapter 95: Chapter 93: The Creepy Deathly Smile
Su Yu and Ma Ziye crouched together, quietly threading through the bushes for a distance of seven to eight meters. Finally, they saw a scene a few meters ahead. Then, the two went rigid all at once as an eerily uncanny feeling welled up in their hearts.
Several meters away from the shrubs, a group of Goblins clad in leather armor lay haphazardly scattered on the ground. The noise they had heard earlier, was, in fact, these very creatures toppling to the ground.
What gave Su Yu and Ma Ziye this uncanny and even gruesome feeling was the sight of these Goblins’ bodies. They didn’t show a single scratch, but at the moment, they all lay motionless on the ground, breathless and dead. More eerie was the expression they wore - their ugly, wrinkled faces were spread into smile, radiating a bizarre sense of satisfaction and contentment.
Seeing a group of unharmed Goblins, smiling in death, Su Yu and Ma Ziye exchanged glances, both feeling a profound sense of eeriness.
"Everyone, come here," Su Yu murmured, summoning the others. Qin Jiagui, who had remained stationary, immediately crawled through the bushes.
As Ma Ziye approached the bodies of the Goblins, she was about to give one a kick when Su Yu hurriedly said, "Don’t touch them. Their deaths are too unnatural. It’s best not to touch them."
Ma Ziye glanced at Su Yu and withdrew her foot.
At this moment, Qin Jiagui and the others also had their eyes on the bodies of the Goblins. Everyone’s first impression was the same as Su Yu’s, they all felt an uncanny presence.
Goblin corpses were not a strange sight, but the twisted smiles on their faces were. These Goblins had been alive until they reached a point about ten meters from the group, before suddenly collapsing one after another onto the ground. This made everyone feel strange.
"What does this mean? They all died with smiles on their faces?" said Zhang Zhongmou, looking utterly baffled.
Qin Jiagui was more cautious. He mused, "Nobody should touch these Goblins’ bodies. I guess they might have been poisoned. You might have heard of poisons which can cause a person to die with a strange smile on their face."
Listening to Qin Jiagui, the rest seemed to understand why; and suddenly, all were on the alert. If the Goblins were really poisoned, then the poison would be more dangerous than a beast, as it could strike anywhere, anytime.
Zhao Shichang said, "But if they really died of poisoning, then what’s the poison? And where is it? Are there any poisonous items around? Is it a poisonous insect, snake, or a poisonous gas?"
Su Yu said decisively, "Don’t worry about how these Goblins died, we should immediately retreat, make a detour, and stay as far away from here as possible."
Everyone nodded their heads in agreement, without hesitation, and immediately withdrew back through the bushes, speeding their escape in another direction, as far away from the Goblin bodies as possible.
The most fearsome thing is the unknown. The strange deaths of these Goblins had instilled in them an indistinct dread.
The group quickened their pace. Zhao Shichang swung his bone knife repeatedly to hack at tree branches and clear the obstacles in front. His knife was the most convenient tool among them for chopping branches and clearing the way.
Tree branches fell one after another under Zhao Shichang’s knife. The group quickly dashed through the dense woods, covering a distance of hundreds of metres and putting a considerable distance between themselves and the Goblin bodies.
"Ah—" Suddenly, Zhao Shichang let out a scream and stood still.
Lei Rui, who was just behind him, bumped into his back due to his sudden halt. She let out a soft yelp. Then she looked up and saw two green monstrous corpses lying in front of Zhao Shichang.
"Giant Goblin beasts," Zhao Shichang gasped.
Su Yu quickly took a couple of steps forward and saw two Giant Goblin Beasts’ corpses on the ground. They showed no signs of injury, but their faces wore the same eerie smiles of satisfaction that appeared to be frozen. Their eyes were wide open, as if they were seeing the most beautiful scene in their life just before they died. However, their expression seemed utterly terrifying to Su Yu and the others.
"Let’s go the other way." Su Yu immediately took a step back and pointed into another direction.
"Let’s go." At this point, Qin Jiagui didn’t have time to think further. The group had come across a bunch of Goblins and two giant Goblin beast corpses, and all felt an inexplicable fear. They changed direction once again and made a run for it.
"Quickly, let’s get out of here," Qin Jiagui said, his heart pounding as he urged the group to speed up.
Su Yu kept silent, his face solemn. Inside his left arm, his Special Power surged. All the muscles in his body tensed up, ready to launch ’Tearing Storm’ at any sign of danger, to pulverize everything.
"Ah, what is this?"
In no time, people in the front, Zhao Shichang and Li Dong, let out cries of surprise again. This time, they saw another group of corpses, all wearing twisted smiles – five Goblins, one giant Goblin beast and a human corpse.
At this, everyone stopped to examine the human body closely. The man appeared to be in his twenties. His clothes were in tatters, his complexion sallow, seemingly starved for many days. Now he lay on the ground, showing no signs of injury, his face showed the same uncanny contentment and happy smile.
Whether it was a human or any other creature, all had died the same way.
"Let’s go." Qin Jiagui roared after assessing the scene. Everyone had a foreboding feeling, no one said another word. No one had the energy to speculate about the identity of this twenty-something man, or guess how he ended up dead. At the moment, their priority was getting as far away as possible. This place was far too eerie.
However, everything afterward made everyone increasingly frightened and fearful.
No matter which direction they chose or where they ran, they could still encounter the same kind of bodies with eerie smiles on their faces. These bodies included Goblins, formidable Goblin knights, and Giant Goblin beasts, with humans scattered in between. There were females and males, old and young, ugly and handsome. All had one thing in common: they wore an eerie, rigid smile, and they were dead.
Suddenly, Su Yu came to a halt.
"What’s wrong?" asked Qin Jiagui, somewhat short of breath.
"Since we can’t escape it, there’s no point in running anymore. Regardless of the direction, we always encounter bodies. Qin Jiagui, we should go north as planned. Whether it’s a blessing or a curse, we can’t avoid it," said Su Yu as he strode off towards the north. His left hand bore shifting black scales that appeared and disappeared intermittently, which seemed rather magical.
Zhang Zhongmou had complete faith in Su Yu. He said nothing and followed Su Yu.
Qin Jiagui hesitated only for a second before gesturing, "Everyone, catch up. No matter where we go, we encounter dead bodies. In that case, we should stick to our original plan and head north."
