Chapter 589: Chapter 454: Strange Events in the Mountain Forest (2nd Update)
As dusk fell, the two reached a town village at the edge of the so-called "Demonic Mountain Range".
The town was not small, and the two, leading the Horned Demon Horses, paid two "Time Coins" as a toll to enter. After a night’s rest in the town, Lei Leian bought some tents necessary for wilderness survival, and they set off towards the "Demonic Forest".
The "Demonic Forest" was not far from the town they had stayed in for the night, only a few dozen miles away, and they arrived in a short time. Su Yu looked around and found that there were hardly any people here, unlike the edge of the "Demon Beast Mountain Range", where many villagers hunted, practiced, or gathered resources. This "Demonic Forest", however, was eerily quiet. It seemed Lei Leian’s referral to this place as a forbidden area was not an empty statement.
Upon arriving at the "Demonic Forest", Lei Leian set free the two Horned Demon Horses. In this almost deserted "Demonic Forest", there was no need to worry about anything. Their current strength could take them much faster than galloping through the forest on two Horned Demon Horses.
"Lei Leian, do you remember where the ’Tears of Timis’ are in the ’Demonic Forest’?" Su Yu asked, watching her cut the reins of the two Horned Demon Horses, and with a light slap, the horses dashed away scared.
"Yes, I have a strong sense of direction because I came through here before. Don’t worry, I won’t lose my way," Lei Leian said, watching the two Horned Demon Horses dash away. She smiled slightly at Su Yu, and then they began to climb up the "Demonic Forest".
As they delved into the Demonic Forest, Su Yu found it different from the Demon Beast Mountain Range teeming with monsters. This forest was filled with a light fog, and only occasionally would they see a few never-before-seen creatures. However, these beasts would flee from them and not approach.
"Why is this place called the ’Demonic Forest’? It seems quite safe," Su Yu asked with a slightly furrowed brow.
Lei Leian was fiddling with a peculiar device she had taken from her storage bracelet, and she replied while looking at the instrument, "Because it’s easy to get lost in this ’Demonic Forest’ and never find your way back. Su Yu, you wouldn’t get lost because you’re following me. Even for a lone man, there’s a chance he would get lost. Hehe."
Lei Leian chuckled lightly then put the device away, "This device can help figure out direction. Ada, you have the best sense of direction among fifth category lifeforms. Have you sensed anything?"
Ada was already frowning and upon hearing Lei Leian’s question, hesitated before answering: "Indeed, this place is strange. As if there’s a demonic power filling this place, affecting my spirit sense...the ’Demonic Forest’...it appears if we venture deeper, even fifth category lifeforms could lose their way here. Su Yu, this forest is very strange."
Su Yu felt a tinge of solemnity hearing Ada so serious.
Lei Leian acknowledged with a hum and said, "But I’ve been prepared. This device won’t be confused. I’ve determined the direction just now. Let’s go."
They began to accelerate and Su Yu gradually realized that all the trees and mountains looked the same around them. Subtle influence was tampering with their sense of direction, making it difficult to distinguish north from south, east from west, even for Fifth Category lifeforms.
At this time, they could only rely on Lei Leian’s device to tell the direction.
As the surrounding light began to darken, Lei Leian was considering setting up a tent when Su Yu suddenly spotted a fire in the distance.
Seeing a fire flicker in the dark forest was surprising, both Su Yu and Lei Leian became curious. Lei Leian dropped the idea of building a tent and said, "Let’s go see what that is?"
They rushed towards the flickering firelight, and soon saw a large valley within the forest. Surprisingly, there were rows of simple houses in the valley. At the center of these houses, there were several bonfires burning and the flickering firelight was coming from these bonfires.
Su Yu and Lei Leian looked at each other with astonishment in their eyes. They couldn’t have imagined that there would be a village in such a "Demonic Forest". Hiding behind a boulder on a slope, they watched hundreds of silhouettes gathered around the bonfires. The people were clothed in rags, and many simply wrapped in Beast skins. It looked like a village of primitive people.
Because of the distance, their "Perception Eye" couldn’t capture everything, but Su Yu sensed from afar that these hundreds of primitive-like people’s aura wasn’t particularly strong. If they were Black Iron Warriors, they wouldn’t exceed Level Five, so for him and Lei Leian, these people were nothing to be feared.
Lei Leian slightly furrowed her brow, mumbling to herself, "Could it be the indigenous tribe in this ’Demonic Forest’?"
Su Yu turned to look at her, asking, "Indigenous tribe?"
"Yes. Some people got lost in the ’Demonic Forest’ and could not leave. Eventually, they settled here, passing down their culture from one generation to the next, slowly forming indigenous tribes distributed in various parts of the ’Demonic Forest’. I hadn’t expected there to be such a village here."
At this, Lei Leian gave a small smile, "The people of these indigenous tribes are not violent, in fact, most of them are quite kind and friendly. We don’t need to stay outside tonight. Let’s go and have a look. We might even get to taste their local specialties."
As Lei Leian spoke, she got up. At that moment, a slight unrest began to spread among the hundreds of individuals in the distance. Groups of the indigenous people emerged from the crowd, all surrounding a single individual. They could hear wave-like cheers echoing from all directions.
"What are they doing?" From such a distance, it was difficult to make out what was going on. Su Yu furrowed his brows slightly. The distant chants sounded like "Burn him" or something of the sort.
Lei Leian, unable to make out the situation, speculated, "Are we just in time for one of their festivals? Let’s go and have a look."
Having heard from Lei Leian that the people in the "Demonic Forest" were hospitable, and sensing that they were not particularly powerful, Su Yu didn’t worry. Seeing Lei Leian’s curiosity, he accompanied her out from behind the rock and started making their way towards the valley.
As they raced along the valley, they encountered no guards from the indigenous tribe. They directly reached the square, where hundreds had gathered, all fixated on the event at the centre, so engrossed that they were oblivious to the arrival of Su Yu and Lei Leian.
Once they were closer, Su Yu and Lei Leian could clearly hear the chants of "Burn him". The voices were strange, but Su Yu understood the three words.
Su Yu knitted his brows slightly and peeked through the crowd to see a small girl tied to a stake in the centre of the bonfires. Several people were stoking the flames with bundles of wood, seemingly ready to set the girl ablaze.
The crowd was outraged, as if the girl tied to the stake was their mortal enemy. When Su Yu and Ada, perched on his shoulder, got a good look at the girl, they both visibly shuttered. With a glance at each other, the shock in their eyes was unmistakable.
They had not expected to see the girl here, in an indigenous village located in the "Demonic Forest", hundreds of millions of kilometers away from the "Black Iron City" and within the influence of the "White Tiger Giant City".
The girl, who was tied to the stake and about to be set on fire, was the same Feng’er, the City Lord of the "Black and White City". During the battle at the "Black and White City", Feng’er summoned the power of darkness and defeated the Ice Giant from the "Skeleton Ice City". When she was just about to awaken, the power inside her surpassed the limit this world could contain, summoning a heavenly giant hand.
This heavenly giant hand struck the little girl with a powerful blow, throwing her away into the unknown. No one knew where she landed or what happened to her after that.
Later, Ada guessed that because Anoka died, part of the creature, Fire Phoenix, from the Category 5 Lifeforms in Feng’er’s body belonged to Anoka. Thus, she either remained unconscious or returned to the Demon God World like a Demon Divine Beast. As the "Black and White City" was destroyed following Anoka’s death, and Feng’er was flung somewhere unknown by the heavenly giant hand, for the time being, the matter was considered ended. However, they never expected to see Feng’er again in such a remote indigenous village within the "Demonic Forest".
At this moment, Feng’er was tied to a stake, her face covered in terror and dirt. Su Yu and Ada could hardly believe their eyes. This little girl was the City Lord of the "Black and White City" they had encountered.
"What has happened inside?" Lei Leian excitedly squeezed her way in, quickly noticing the little girl. She gasped, covering her mouth, and looked at Su Yu. Her reactions mirrored Su Yu’s initial shock upon seeing the girl, disbelief written across her face.
The girl was soon surrounded by piles of wood. Then, a middle-aged man with multi-colored feathers in his hair and white paint on his face lifted his arms high. As if on cue, the roars of the villagers quieted down. (To be continued... For more Chapters, please visit www.qidian.com. Support the author by reading the officially released Chapters!)
