Chapter 381: Chapter 300 Final Goodbye (3rd update)
Su Yu and the others had destroyed everything they could in the school. They didn’t know what the "Life Nest" was, but they had a feeling it was part of some sinister ritual. They wanted to completely obliterate it, but that was easier said than done.
Eventually, it was Qin Jiagui who suggested a solution - to enter the "Fire Elemental Space", look for Fire Elemental Energy Stones, and then use them to incinerate the Life Nest along with all the bodies in it.
Whether to destroy the Life Nest, or to grant the souls of these thousands of corpses some semblance of peace, cremation was undoubtedly the best option.
Heeding Qin Jiagui’s plan, Su Yu and Ada teleported into the Fire Elemental Space. Mounted on Ada, they set off in search of the Fire Elemental Energy Stones.
These "Fire Elemental Energy Stones" could be found all over the first level of the Fire Elemental Space. With Ada’s recognizance abilities, they quickly found some.
Su Yu shattered an amount of the stones that looked like clusters of fiery red crystals. As Ada stood in the midst of the broken stones, they teleported back, bringing the large amount of Fire Elemental Energy Stones back to the school.
By now, it was broad daylight in the forest and Qin Jiagui and others were still standing guard at the school. During this time, Ma Ziye and others had a long chat with Gu Lingshuang. They learnt that after they had left, the people in the school, organized by Lin Shi, had decided to make the school their temporary base. They organized teams to kill monsters and evolve, they attempted to taste various monster meats — eventually discovering that both goblin and goblin-like meats could be eaten.
Although their struggles were hard and the road was filled with difficulties, they had bravely held on to survival. With the strength of the group increasing steadily, Lin Shi started organizing elite teams, leading some of them personally to explore outside.
It was during one of Lin Shi’s exploration trips with Gu Lingshuang and others that the school was attacked by a group of mysterious figures dressed in half black and half white clothes, who were Fourth Order strong. Everyone who was not out exploring was killed by this group and their bodies were used as nourishment for the Life Nest.
When Lin Shi and others returned and discovered the truth, they began launching guerrilla attacks against the mysterious group, seizing opportunities to ambush and kill them. Quite a few of the attackers were killed in these attacks and they earned the moniker "ringleaders". However, they too lost people amidst this process and now, from the team of about twenty elite members, less than five were left.
Overwhelmed, Su Yun couldn’t help asking, "Why are you so persistent? Why don’t you just think of running away from here, find another way?"
Gu Lingshuang glanced at her, and said sadly: "We’re comrades who have banded together, living through this cruel world as partners. When our comrades have died so suddenly... do you think... we can just run away for our own sake? We all... know what the end results are, only death. But before we die, we just want to kill as many enemies as we can..."
Hearing Gu Lingshuang’s words, everyone fell quiet. They understood her point. When the school they had worked hard to strengthen was suddenly obliterated, the shock was much like being part of a team where your members were suddenly killed by an enemy force. The remaining team member would lose the will to live.
Gu Lingshuang said flatly: "Initially there were five of us, but Xiao Lu is also dead... Now including me, there are only four of us... Haha, four people..."
Listening to her, everyone felt a bitter taste in their mouth and didn’t know how to comfort her.
After a while, Qin Jiagui fiercely punched the ground and declared in a deep voice: "We swear that, no matter what it takes, we will ensure these murderers pay the same heavy price...no, a lethal price. We will not rest until these beasts are wiped out. We swear by the dead that -"
Pointing to the pit filled with thousands of bodies in front of him, Qin Jiagui began to emit a low wailing.
"Yes, what we can do now, is to let these murderers... these damned bastards... pay with blood for the blood debt..." Zhang Zhongmou also couldn’t help drawing his sword, and thrust it into the ground with a ’whoosh’, vowing as he looked at the mountain of bodies and sea of blood in front of him.
Every one of them felt the blood boiling within their bodies, they could feel the burning flame of hatred erupting within them. A do-or-die battle had begun with this group of unidentified attackers dressed in half-black-half-white clothes.
When Su Yu and Ada returned with a multitude of energy stones, everyone joined hands to throw the stones into the pit. Then, Zhang Zhongmou ignited the fire with his "Red Lotus Sword", using the "Red Lotus Flame" technique.
Blazing flames rushed into the pit and quickly ignited the fire element within the stones.
As more and more Energy Stones ignited, a fearsome blaze rose from them, reaching skyward, causing the pit to issue "cracking and popping" sounds, and the blood was heated to a sizzle, sending up a thick cloud of white smoke.
The Fire Elemental Energy Stones were terrifyingly powerful. Their combustion rate surpassed that of gasoline and petroleum in the real world by a lot. Soon, the entire pit was engulfed in soaring flames. With the voluminous energy contained in these stones, this gargantuan fire was likely to last a long time. Amid such flames, even steel would be incinerated, let alone these bodies and the bloody scene.
Everyone watched the massive fire from afar. After a long while, Qin Jiagui finally turned around and said, "Everyone, we should leave."
"Yes, we should leave now." Lei Rui nodded gently, looking around at the school. She understood that after they left today, they would probably never come back in their lifetime: their once familiar school had finally become a memory that only existed in their minds.
"Miss Gu, lead us to the others, and together, we’ll leave this place. Outside this forest is our village, where many good companions live. We won’t have to..." Su Yu was looking at Gu Lingshuang as he spoke, but he stopped mid-sentence; he noticed that Gu Lingshuang had lifted her face, staring at the raging flames within the pit. Her face was streaked with tears, her lips quivered slightly as if she was muttering something indiscernible.
Su Yu said no more and stepped back. He understood that Gu Lingshuang was bidding her final farewell to the pit and the flames within, her final farewell to the more than a thousand friends who had perished there.
The others also fell silent, waiting quietly for Gu Lingshuang.
After a time, Gu Lingshuang finally dragged her hand across her tear-streaked face, turned, and said, "Let’s go." Then she moved ahead without a backward glance – a small action that revealed her determination and resilience.
Su Yu and the others followed her. As they were about to leave, Su Yu couldn’t help but turn back. His eyes rested on the Life Nest that was now shrouded by roaring flames, and he quietly bid his last farewell to the over a thousand students and teachers with whom he had once shared his life.
In this life, we will never meet again!
The sky-high flames drew the attention of many people and creatures in the forest. Most of them paused to watch from a distance, their faces filled with shock and awe.
Among them were three individuals in ragged clothes. Their hair was unkempt, and they looked emaciated.
The three - two men and a woman - including a man close to thirty who had only one arm remaining. His sleeve was empty on one side, identification of him as an amputee.
The amputee had a gaunt face and was covered in mud, making him look at least a decade older. At this moment, he was looking up in shock, "Has there been a fire at the school? What happened there? I can’t see the black and white ghosts anymore; their patrol teams are usually everywhere."
The woman among them also looked disheveled, her natural beauty hard to conceal despite her state. In particular, her full bosom was barely concealed by her torn clothes. She looked worried, "Lingshuang and Xiaolu didn’t return all night, something must have happened. Lets go and check."
"Yes, let’s go." The third person was a seemingly twenty-something young man with sagging facial skin, a sign of rapid weight loss. He licked his lips as he spoke, appearing to be quite hungry.
With suspicion, these three headed in the direction of the burning school.
The speed at which they traveled was impressive, appearing to be well acquainted with maneuvering through the forest. They knew the terrain well, from the sloping lands to the dense shrubbery. But caution loomed large on their faces as they rushed forward, their eyes darting in all directions.
Soon, they arrived at the edge of the forest close to the school. Once they hid behind some large trees, they looked out towards the school and saw a group of people emerging from the main gate.
Leading them was the familiar figure of Gu Lingshuang, but the people behind her...
Suddenly, they froze. Their bodies quivered and they stood there, dumbfounded.
Su Yu, Qin Jiagui, Ma Ziye, Zhang Zhongmou, Li Dong...
Familiar faces, one after the other, hit them like waves, making their bodies tremble uncontrollably.
They... they... they’re...back..." The one-armed man clenched his fist. His body shook, the veins on his clenched fist becoming more pronounced. Then, he fell to his knees and burst into uncontrollable tears. (To be continued. For how the story unfolds next, please visit www.qidian.com.
