Chapter 1279: Chapter 1279: Sit obediently, don’t make a fuss

She couldn’t use someone who genuinely cared for her as a shield for her own sake.

Ning Yanan looked at the congee in front of her and suddenly lost all her appetite.

"Click—"

The sound of the door lock being opened startled her; she turned around and saw Mo Xiyan holding her house keys, walking towards her.

"I was afraid you might not be awake when I got back, so I took the keys from your bag. You’re not thinking there’s a thief in the house, are you, looking at me like that?"

"No, I thought you had already left."

Ning Yanan stood still, somewhat surprised by his presence.

"I had gone, but see, I’ve come back."

Mo Xiyan placed the keys on the living room table, took off his coat, and walked into the kitchen.

Seeing the untouched congee in the pot and then glancing at the bowl in Ning Yanan’s hand, he furrowed his brows.

"You haven’t eaten anything this late?"

"I was just about to eat," Ning Yanan said awkwardly, gesturing to her bowl.

As soon as she had finished speaking, Mo Xiyan took the bowl from her hand, set it aside, and pulled her out of the kitchen.

He led her to the dining table and sat her down.

"Sit, I’ll get it for you."

"There’s no need, I can do it myself."

Ning Yanan was about to get up but was pressed back down to the table.

"The woman carrying a baby is the most precious, that’s what my mom always tells me. You still look pale after a sleep, so sit tight and don’t fuss," he said as he entered the kitchen.

He ladled out two bowls of congee and also brought out all the small dishes from the kitchen, arranging them one by one on the table.

He handed a spoon to Ning Yanan.

"Worried you might lack an appetite alone, I’ll join you."

"Thank you."

Ning Yanan took the spoon from his hand and whispered her thanks with her head bowed.

She wasn’t sure whether her thanks were for his gesture with the spoon, or for Mo Xiyan himself.

Head down, she silently ate her congee.

Maybe it was hunger, but Ning Yanan quickly finished her bowl.

She put down her spoon and lifted her head towards Mo Xiyan.

That’s when she noticed he hadn’t taken a single bite and was just staring at her face intently.

Ning Yanan subconsciously touched her own face.

"Your face is clean, there’s nothing on it. I was just wondering how long you were planning to eat with your head bowed toward me," Mo Xiyan teased, seeing her dazed expression.

"I was just eating," Ning Yanan instinctively defended herself.

"Yes, I know. I’m not saying you’re deliberately avoiding me."

"..."

Didn’t his words just make things worse?

Ning Yanan only now realized that this man was not as serious in private as he was at work; the Mo Xiyan at home seemed capable of being quite playful.

"Surprised to find I’m different from what you had imagined?"

"How do you know what I’m thinking?" Ning Yanan asked in surprise.

Mo Xiyan gave a carefree smile, leaning back in his chair, and raised his eyebrows at her.

"The look in your eyes suddenly became like you were looking at a stranger. If it’s not because you truly don’t recognize me, then you must be thinking I’m different from what you imagined. Could there be a third possibility?"

"You are indeed different from what I had previously thought..." Ning Yanan mumbled, feeling no wrong in thinking so.

"If you spent a bit more time with me, you would discover many more differences," Mo Xiyan’s gaze deepened as he looked at Ning Yanan, his eyes as if trying to draw her into them.

Ning Yanan’s heart fluttered slightly, and she quivered her lips, unable to utter a word.
