Chapter 79: It’s part of your training
*The next day*
Ethan tried waking her up for the third time but she showed no signs of stirring. ’’Wake up, it’s time to train.’’ He patted her softly, but Eva only grumbled and turned the other way to continue sleeping.
Julian, doing push-ups, glanced at the bed to see Ethan’s helpless face and Eva’s sleeping figure.
’’Place a meat near her nose, and she would wake up,’’ Julian suggested, his eyes gleaming with mischief; he could not wait to see her reaction.
Ethan’s eyes flickered with interest at Julian’s words. He strode toward the sofa, uncovered the remaining food, grabbed a piece of meat, and approached the unsuspecting Eva.
In Eva’s dream, she chased a slab of meat through the forest, its aroma tormenting her. The mouthwatering scent grew stronger, fueling her hunger. With a burst of strength, she leaped at it.
Ethan’s hand was held under her grip, her face moved closer to the meat in his hands with her mouth opened and her eyes shut. Julian watched with interest, stopping his workout.
Ethan removed the meat with his free hands and watched her face scrunch up in frustration, wondering why the meat had escaped again after she had caught it.
Suddenly, she saw the meat grow legs, and they were two this time; she ran after them with a drool.
Meanwhile, Julian and Ethan held meat in their hands and inched closer to her nose, their eyes held laughter as they watched her drooling expression.
Eva nearly cried as the meat sped away, leaving her behind. She let out a frustrated roar and jolted awake, blinking in confusion at Julian and Ethan. Her mind was still foggy with sleep.
Ethan subtly moved the meat from her face, trying to hide it behind his back, but his actions cleared Eva’s mind, and her eyes narrowed dangerously.
Julian swallowed and stepped back, but Eva’s next words froze them both.
’’There is no need to hide.’’ She paused and sat up in bed, her anger mounting when she recalled her embarrassing dream. She shot the culprits a glare before getting out of bed.
’’I tried to wake you up to train, but you didn’t wake up; Julian came up with the idea,’’ Ethan explained, washing himself clean under Julian’s shocked gaze.
He only suggested and never forced Ethan to do it; now, all the blame was pushed on him. His skin pricked under Eva’s blank stare.
Ethan wisely remained silent, hoping Eva forgot about him, but she turned to him and said.
"’Husband, I think I should practice aiming today. Julian will be the target." Eva’s sweet tone sent chills down their spines.
Ethan felt her gaze on him, and he nodded in agreement; he shot Julian a look of encouragement as he went to prepare the arrows for her training.
Julian’s lips parted but closed, unable to say a single word under her calm stare. This kind of Eva scared him.
’Tut, how dare they! By the time I am done with them today, they will never try that again. (╬ಠ益ಠ)’ She snorted as she stifled a yawn; with a passing glance at Julian’s pleading figure, she strode towards the forest to wash up by the stream.
Time passed, and she emerged from the forest, her hair damp and wrapped in cloth, her anger now eased.
She moved towards the covered food and began eating her breakfast while glancing at Ethan who created arrows with his ice.
Her gaze darted around for Julian, finding him sprawled on the grass as if he had nothing to live for—fruit placed beside him, waiting for her to shoot.
Eva’s shoulders trembled, ’’Cough...haha.’’ She nearly choked from suppressed laughter. He has always been the one laughing at her, today is his day.
Not bothering to hide, she laughed loudly, her body weak from too much laughter; tears streamed down from the corner of her eyes, making her vision slightly blurry.
’’Eva dear, you’re not angry.’’ Julian’s appearance was so sudden that it startled Eva that her laughter came to a halt.
She looked up to see Julian’s handsome face closer to her and she was momentarily stunned. ’’Wife, your husband knows he is wrong, can you let me go just this once, hmm...?’’ he drawled his voice deeper, a flash of pride flashed through his eye at her dazed expression.
’It seems my face is useful.’ He thought as caressed her chin, his thumb creeping to her lips.
An electrified shiver ran down her spine, which broke her out of his spell. She dashed out from the sofa, her hand patting her chest in relief. ’It was too risky, I nearly fell for his temptation. Tsk...femme fatale.’ She shook her head with a frown, feeling she got the phrase wrong, but she couldn’t find the right word for him.
’’Stay where you are!’’ Eva held out her palm to stop him in place. ’’I’m still using you as a target. It’s a foregone conclusion, so don’t bother trying to seduce me; it won’t work.’’ Eva choked the words that were about to leave his lips.
Julian watched her run from him like he was some kind of plague. Julian almost doubted himself—had his charm faded? Did she no longer find him attractive? No, impossible.
’’The arrows are ready. Julian, go back to your position.’’ Ethan called out, snapping Julian out of his thoughts.
He shot Ethan a sidelong glare and walked toward the fruit with a resigned sigh. Eva’s eyes lit up as Julian placed a fruit on his head.
Taking the icy arrows from Ethan’s hands, she was distracted by the beauty of the bow. Its body resembled two white wings, with a thin string of ice between them.
She traced the bow’s curves, enjoying its coolness. For a moment, she forgot all about Julian’s tense figure in the field.
"Eva, pull the string," Ethan whispered, his breath brushing against her nape, and she shot the arrow without aim.
"Ethan!!!" Julian’s furious shout cleared Eva’s mind, and she turned to find her arrow lunged into Julian’s thighs, an inch closer to his lower half.
Eva broke out into a cold sweat, her hands holding the bow trembled, "I did—" her apology was interrupted by the sudden change in their surrounding.
They were no longer in her space, appearing at the corner near the stairs. Julian forgot his pain and quickly checked the time.
"24hours." He uttered. Eva’s expression dropped; she thought they could escape death if the breathfordge went out, but it seemed It was impossible.
"Fake goldenfinger," Eva muttered, shooting daggers at the ring on her finger. The ring would have broken out in cold sweat if it were a living thing because Eva hoped to strangle it to death.
"My bow!" Eva screamed after noticing her icy bow was gone. Julian’s expression darkened—her words were a painful reminder of how close he’d come to losing his future lineage.
"Oh, so if you get the bow back, are you going to shoot another shot at me. Maybe aim closer this time." Julian’s sarcastic words made Eva stiffen.
She turned mechanically and flashed him an apologetic smile, and inched closer to the stairs, ready to flee.
But noticing the arrow lunged into his thighs, blood sliding down his thighs, she frowned.
"Ethan, why is the arrow so sharp?" She asked as she bent closer to his thighs to heal him.
Julian turned to Ethan, waiting for an answer. Ethan ignored his stare and replied to Eva instead.
"It’s part of your training. In the dungeon, you’ll be fighting real monsters, not lifeless targets—you need to get used to the feeling of killing." Ethan’s calm, logical tone echoed down the stairs.
Speechless, Julian could only stare at Ethan with a dumbfounded expression.
"So Julian makes a very good target, and he won’t die if I was there; there was nothing to worry about," Ethan concluded under Julian’s constipated expression.
Eva removed the arrow gently and healed Julian’s wound. She took in his words and couldn’t find anything wrong with it, so she nodded but she apologized to Julian.
"Sorry, next time I will aim with a blunt arrow. It wouldn’t cause such an injury." Eva said as she patted his shoulders.
"There was next time?" Julian asked with an expression filled with shock.
Ethan patted his back with an unspoken agreement. He followed after Eva, leaving Julian’s frozen figure.
The three forgot about the beasts which were in Eva’s space.
The beasts glanced at each other and the empty field in confusion. The snake slithered into the forest, followed by the wolf. Only the fox remained, standing still and whimpering in frustration.
Thinking its master had abandoned him in a foreign place while the other beasts went in search of their master through the forest.
"Knock!"
Selina shrank into her bed at the sound on her door; she had peeped through the pinhole and saw the driver of that madman. Selina cried out, closing her mouth to mute the sound.
"Open up or I will call the Den assigners to open your door. Don’t keep my master waiting." The man’s voice called out from the other end.
Her body trembled at the mention of that man, and she crept slowly to the door. Taking deep breaths she opened the door.
