Chapter 97: Peacock
Chapter 97: Peacock
The best word to describe the Mayor’s Engagement Party would be "Bloodbath."
Had we been in ancient times, heads would probably be flying indiscriminately.
Alyssa watched with rapt attention. She wanted to see it live, so she disguised herself as a waitress for the event.
"I think Alyssa’s developing a new hobby. Any more of this, and she’ll end up a cosplayer." Rina mentioned, her head tilted as she scrutinized Alyssa through the screen.
"Or a con man. A cosplayer would be too pure for what that girl has used her disguises for." I tell her, now understanding what Alyssa meant when she said she has long prepared for something like this.
We may have been calmly discussing disguises and cosplaying, but what was playing was a modern take on dramatic telenovelas.
The party started strong, with Joseph displaying himself like a peacock. He looked extremely proud as if success were already in the bag.
"Riri, when you have your engagement party, what about skipping video presentations?" I looked at her as if I wasn’t the one to suggest this.
She gave me a side-eye and retorted, "Out of everyone I know, you’re the one fondest of weaponizing event videos. And who says I’m getting engaged?!" Now she’s angry, realizing what I meant late.
I shrugged because she was right. This would be the second time I’m doing this.
"But Boss, isn’t that great? You have a knack for discovering and exposing cheaters." Mitchel said as he stopped tapping on his phone. This earned him a glare from Lucian, but Mitchel, being his fabulous self, just pretended that no such thing had happened.
So Lucian looked at me, but heck if I could control that guy, so I just returned his look with a shrug.
"You’re right, though. I seem to have the skills to catch cheaters red-handed." I looked at Lucian meaningfully, but by now, he should know I was just kidding.
"Don’t even bother, I’m too swamped dealing with all this shit to even consider it."
"HAHAHAHA!" I laughed because he had really been busy dealing with my shit. The funny thing is that I stopped feeling bad about it.
With a big smile on my face, I teased him a bit, "Remember, you did ask for it!"
And Lucian really did, though not to the extent that Joseph asked for this blood rain.
The expression on his face had turned extremely grave, and he was probably wondering why such a thing would be happening on such a grand day.
But of course! No better day than today!
Joseph asked for retribution when he started touching the lives of all those innocent people. But he triggered it too soon when he denied our permit.
"He would’ve survived had he left our permit alone."
The screen displayed a hysterical father and a mother who had fainted upon seeing their daughter’s fiance in all his naked glory.
Everyone watched as he pounded his secretary in spliced-together clips. The dates on each clip showed that the relationship had been going on for a long time.
For a time, the whole venue was silent, and people just looked dumbfounded, unsure of what they were seeing.
Joseph’s secretary clutched onto the table, her eyes so wide they were practically saucers. But she remained silent until her video slot finished, and a slew of different girls followed.
Then all hell broke loose as she screamed, her voice piercing the bubble that enveloped everyone earlier.
She kept on screaming, "Cheater!", "You bastard!" and "Fucker!" like she was the official fiancee. While Kate, the innocent girl implicated in this shenanigan, just wept on the floor.
The contrast was stark, and I couldn’t help but watch Alyssa’s reaction to this.
She kept on schooling her face, aware that someone might review the footage and she might stand out as the only person happy about such an outcome.
But her face cracked a bit when Joseph’s secretary lunged at him while wielding a bottle of wine.
Unfortunately, she was stopped by security, only managing to spill wine on him when she realized she couldn’t get any closer.
But true to Joseph’s unsalvageable personality, he tried denying the clips. And for a moment, some people were actually believing him. That or they had no choice but to hope he wasn’t lying. The relatives of both camps even started duking it out as his relatives tried to insist on his innocence. So punches and slaps were thrown here and there, and they were generous about it, too.
It only stopped when several documents were flashed on the screen.
One would be a paternity test, as well as deposits from his secretary to the three men who kidnapped and abused Ara.
That was actually our biggest takeaway. I wondered why we couldn’t find traces of his under-the-table dealings anywhere, whether in a digital or traditional black book. Apparently, he used his secretary as a cover to deal with his transactions.
With this information, we reordered the clips to shatter the secretary’s delusions so that she wouldn’t cover for him once the items relating to Ara were brought to light.
The people took a while to understand the documents as they read through them, but Joseph was different. He panicked at the header alone.
"SHUT IT OFF!" He screamed, running towards the projector in a bid to shut it off. When he realized it was too high up, he opted to find the computer that ran the videos.
The guy thought it would stop, only to realize that it didn’t matter what plug he pulled. That projection wasn’t going anywhere.
Even if the whole town experiences a blackout, he would not be able to escape seeing the proof of his crimes.
It didn’t take too long for the crowd to start gasping in horror. At this point, someone had decided to call the police. When Joseph realized this, he actually started gunning for the door.
WHAM!
A heavy and sudden sound reverberated across the hall. It was the sound of a foldable chair against a speeding object, in this case, a person.
It was a short blonde, her eyes devoid of the service industry’s friendly vibe. What was evident was her menacing aura, which was strong enough to be conveyed through the screen.
Her hit was a home run, effectively sending Joseph to the ground, ready to be picked up by the authorities.
Actually, the police would definitely come even if that person didn’t call on them. After all, we’ve sent more evidence to the political opposition.
So, why did we not go straight to the local police? Some officers may still be on the Mayor’s payroll, and the upright ones would need stronger backing to take comfortable action against politicians like Joseph.
We were also sure he’d try to wiggle himself out, so my good-ol’ husband sent evidence of his crimes to the ombudsman.
We watched as Alyssa acted meek, "I...I got the criminal! He wanted to run away! Help!" She screamed while covertly stepping on his manhood, which caused him to scream in pain. But sucks for him, a lot of people have been screaming as they continued to fight.
As I watched the scenes unfold, I said, "I hope this makes her feel a bit better."
"And I hope Ara’s watching."
