Yours, Until Needed
Chapter 60: Cold

Chapter 60: Cold

My momentary heroism earned me several news features, a call from Rina and distressed family members, and a darned cold.

News flash. This girl is down with a cold.

Just great.

I couldn’t believe how I fell ill because of that. It’s been ages since I actually got sick, and now my head feels torn apart. Sneezing repeatedly and being unable to breathe properly is also driving me nuts.

People really don’t appreciate the convenience of working nostrils until they’re suddenly blocked.

"This is why you should scream first before jumping in." Said my husband, who had two perfectly working nostrils.

Annoying.

"You say that, but we both know he would’ve died if I waited a bit more."

Of course, Lucian would know. Just the child’s discoloration and the CCTV footage we retrieved indicated that. We saw what really happened because we had to ask in case someone said I pushed the child into the water.

With how bad my reputation is, we needed to make sure it wouldn’t be used against me.

True enough, the child fell by himself and got buried in balloons without anyone noticing him.

Not that it’s been about a day later, but some have tried to insinuate my involvement to make the JG group indebted to me.

Thankfully, the people of JG did all of us a favor by showing the footage of the child playing by himself and falling into the pool. Ultimately, the negligence was due to his guardian falling asleep in the room.

Achoo!

What a way to spend my forced vacation.

"The Grahams called, wanting to see you today. I told them you’ve gone down with a cold, so we’ll just see them some other time."

"At least that wasn’t some lie to avoid people."

Maybe I’ve gotten sick because of repeatedly lying.

"Just sleep. Your parents have threatened to come over after learning that you’re sick."

"They’re abroad. How would they even come." I whined, sounding like a faulty record player.

"Exactly. It’s good that you know. But they will come if they don’t receive good news soon."

"Even Chester’s banned from going near me. This is just horrible."

So, the good boy has no choice but to sit outside while pawing at the door. Way to make me feel even worse about suddenly getting sick.

"Given how weak of a chicken you are, maybe you’ll learn to get rid of your hero complex."

"Who’s got a hero complex?!" I tell him off angrily, but having a bonding time with my nasal inhaler isn’t helping my image at all.

"So, who was it that saved a stalker from some thug by attacking him?" He looked at me pointedly and received a stink eye in return.

"I need to cleanse myself of this evil, and ignoring those would just increase the curses on me."

"Your evils need jail time, not good deeds."

True. In fact, I may attract more evil by doing this.

"Grandfather has also asked if you had a death wish."

Great, now even Grandpa thinks I’m insane.

"We could’ve still won even if you didn’t risk your life doing that."

"You know what, I get it. You’re angry, but I’m sick and cannot breathe. Can you be angry when I at least have one working nostril?"

It’s not easy to think of witty comebacks when I’m trying to breathe through my mouth and my ears feel blocked.

"Now that you mentioned it, I realized we didn’t get to encounter Lara. Did she come?"

"She did. And she watched as you got taken by the first aider for a check-up."

"She did?" I sniffled as I asked.

"She waited by the wall the whole time. Could’ve become part of the decoration."

"At least she decided not to add to the already growing party."

"You should be careful. Her attention kept trailing after you."

"What’s one more to add to the watch list."

And if we’re being realistic, there are probably more unnamed people that should belong on that list.

I tried shimmying back to the bed, trying to find a position where I could breathe, and then I remembered the documents I needed to sign.

"Did Rina leave documents for me to sign? She told me the other day about them."

"No. You’re signing them by Monday. No one will notarize those documents this weekend, so it won’t kill you not to review and sign them."

"You don’t like your schedule being messed up, but here you are, moving around my schedule."

Let me try that on him and see how he reacts. I’m seriously swamped, and I don’t really have time to nurse this cold.

"I’m not the one sick in bed, needing chicken soup and a change of cold compress."

"Fine."

It’s not like I have any other choice. If the documents aren’t here, then there’s nothing for me to sign.

"And if you’re itching to sign documents, sign the ones in the study."

"And what are those?"

"Insurance documents."

"Did you get insurance for me?" I’m bewildered at how he’s got his hands on insurance documents.

"Yes. It would be dumb not to get more under your name. Seeing as to how you’re always itching to depart this world."

I wanted to throw my used tissues at him, this bastard!

"And I have to change the beneficiaries to my policies, so sign them."

Oh.

"Did you put me in there as your beneficiary?"

"And who else would I put? But there’s really no point because you’re some Daredevil."

"Just watch me claim all your insurance money," I shouted at him.

"Sure. Just survive longer than me. Good luck. And drink your god damned water." Lucian said as he left our room.

Does he not know that people like us are much harder to kill? It’s the nice ones that the Lord takes first.

This is why I fully believe that Alexa and her mom will inevitably reach immortality.

Aish.

I needed to sleep this off. There are so many things to do and a dog to pet. But I’m marooned here until this cold disappears.
