Chapter 706 -708: Paranoia and Overthinking, Enemies Everywhere
“Can these things really block the perception of Snake Father during the ritual?” She Xi, looking at the bundles on the table that Spirit Monster had brought, asked.
He was almost at his limit too. After all, the ritual could not be delayed and was not something he could resolve himself. It was a counterattack by the current High Priest against him, and with the faith being highly prevalent now, if She Xi did not want to be backfired against again, he had to proceed with the ritual.
Even if She Xi could delay, how long could he truly delay?
Fortunately, the arrival of Spirit Monster greatly helped him.
“Why don’t you try it and see? Do you have any other choice?” Spirit Monster said mockingly.
She Xi’s face changed unpredictably. He had picked up the meaning in Spirit Monster’s words, which was that he too did not know.
After all, without real experiments, Qin Muye couldn’t guarantee that everything would work, but just one successful attempt would suffice.
“Alright, I understand. This time, I must crush that despicable person.” She Xi said fiercely.
“Good to know. You better not do anything unnecessary, otherwise, if you die, don’t blame me for not warning you next life,” Spirit Monster said sarcastically.
She Xi’s every move was under Spirit Monster’s watchful eye; they too had noticed that this Snake-man harbored ulterior motives, seemingly planning to let Qin Muye and Snake Father weaken each other.
For now, it was only minor actions, but it might not be just that moving forward, hence the warning.
A backstabber indeed, although to a certain extent, it might have been forced, still, one needed to be cautious when using them.
But She Xi played dumb, not caring about anything else, just said, “Rest assured, I do things with a measure and will not make mistakes.”
“Hope so.” Spirit Monster said, then turned and left, as his visit was primarily to deliver the items and to give a warning.
She Xi stared at the departing Spirit Monster, unable to detect how he had left despite his power.
“The master of Endless Abyss is really generous, to bestow such power upon his subordinates,” She Xi sarcastically remarked. Over these days, he had come to understand, whether it was the Snake Father or the master of Endless Abyss, what they offered were gifts, not something that belonged to him, which was of no benefit to She Xi.
Therefore, he wanted real power.
‘Neither the Snake Father nor the unknown master of Endless Abyss are good partners, perhaps only Emperor Qian is truly suitable for cooperation.’
Although cooperating with Emperor Qian was akin to courting a tiger for its hide, whether following the master of Endless Abyss or the Snake Father, his life was not in his own hands but in the hands of these beings, who could easily snuff him out.
“Let’s take it one step at a time.” Holding a package of strange items, She Xi headed to the Snake Temple. Currently, the entire Snake Temple was sealed off by him in preparation for the ritual; even the current High Priest could not enter, let alone others.
‘The remnants, they eventually took the upper hand.’ She Xi felt helpless in his heart, viewing all Snake-people related to the current High Priest as remnants who had opposed him in the past, even attributing his own failures to them.
Otherwise, how could they rise to power? It must be because they sabotaged him and then reaped the benefits.
Therefore, he naturally detested them deeply, it’s just not a good time to act, otherwise, She Xi would have long dismembered all the Snake-people of this Great Sacrificial Rite lineage.
Did he really need to leave these remnants to trouble himself?
‘For now, it’s impossible to kill, they must be kept as a mascot.’
‘But for these remnants, death is not the worst, the real horror is letting the power you struggled so hard to obtain slip through your fingers.’
Unable to kill, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t torment. In She Xi’s eyes, these remnants were as passionate about power as he was.
Thus, She Xi’s revenge was to let them secure a position yet hold no real power, merely an empty figurehead.
This was truly the best revenge on these ‘remnants.’
“Snake King Your Majesty, you’ve arrived,” said the Snake-man guard of the Snake Temple respectfully.
“Has the High Priest come in the last couple of days?” She Xi asked as if out of curiosity, feeling certain that they must have come and been very reluctantly stopped at the door.
“Since the last time he was refused entry, he hasn’t come again,” the Snake-man guard replied.
“???” She Xi looked puzzled. Why aren’t you playing by the script? Weren’t you supposed to kick up a fuss in the Snake Temple and make a big deal out of this? How come you just stopped coming and didn’t even follow up?
“Did anyone else come by?” She Xi asked tactfully.
“No, besides the High Priest’s visit on the first day, it’s only you this time,” the Snake-man guard answered truthfully.
She Xi looked somewhat puzzled but didn’t say much, “Hmm, I’ll set up inside, open the door for me.”
The Snake-man guard quickly let him enter the Snake Temple, and along the way, he wondered what those Snake-men were really up to.
‘I understand now, they must have bigger plans; it’s a pity that all the Death Soldiers have been cleared out, otherwise, we could have surely investigated their schemes.’
‘The actions now are just to lower my guard, these remnants are underestimating me too much. Do they really think I’d relax just because of their feigned weakness?’
As soon as he entered the Snake Temple, She Xi immediately speculated that the people of the High Priest’s faction wanted to take action against him, which made him sneer.
‘Once I block out the Serpent Father’s Perception during the sacrificial rite, even if you try something, you won’t stand a chance.’
The best opportunity to strike would be during the Great Sacrificial Rite, not only making him look bad but also using the power of the Serpent Father to weaken his own power.
Without the support of the Serpent Father, everything would be mere vain talk.
The arrangements were soon finished, but She Xi looked at the devices without much confidence.
“Fashioned from metal, there is no power fluctuation at all, they look just like useless decorations, can this really be successful?”
He thought about disassembling them, but then considered that if the Spirit Monster of the Endless Abyss truly wanted to harm him, why bother with such acts? Just taking direct action would suffice.
So, in the end, he decided not to meddle unnecessarily and disassemble them; if anything went wrong, he’d only be digging a pit for himself.
“The master of the Endless Abyss aims high, the Serpent Father is likely not enough to satisfy him,” She Xi felt that since they could offer something so precious, it certainly wasn’t just for the sake of the Serpent Father.
It’s very likely that the Serpent Father is only part of their plan. In She Xi’s mind, the Serpent Father was nearly omnipotent.
So, something that could block the Serpent Father’s Perception must be extraordinary.
After finishing the arrangements, She Xi also left the Snake Temple, making sure to instruct the Snake-man guard not to let other Snake-men enter the Snake Temple to avoid any issues with his setup.
The Snake-man guard naturally agreed, as they had always been doing this anyway. As for the setup, he glanced at it—it seemed like some kind of decoration, which he didn’t pay much attention to.
And so, matters went by, and She Xi naturally returned to his own lair.
During this time, he even deliberately took a detour to pass by the lair of the current High Priest and subtly inquired about him, discovering to his confirmation that the High Priest was painting. This made She Xi increasingly sure that this group of ‘remnants’ had a grand conspiracy; even after having their power usurped, they still had the mood for leisure and art, clearly a guise.
And a very good disguise at that; even She Xi had not discerned it, and were it not for his prior alertness, he would have been completely deceived by them.
The current High Priest even warmly invited him to come in for tea, which She Xi declined on the pretext of being busy with official duties.
If he had gone for tea, it’s possible the other party might have tried to get information out of him indirectly. Even if nothing was revealed, what if they detected something from his demeanor?
“Strange, are official duties really that busy?” the High Priest wondered, watching She Xi walk away. Although he had usurped his position, it was out of necessity since he had been forced into it. If not for She Xi pulling some maneuvers and declaring himself the Snake King, he would have even considered returning the position of High Priest to him.
After all, being High Priest meant managing the Snake Temple and presiding over the sacrificial rites; he would have much preferred to enjoy himself a bit more or perhaps spend time painting and pursuing the arts instead.
“Ah well, once this Great Sacrificial Rite is over, I’ll figure out a way to let someone else take over as High Priest,” thought the High Priest. He was just an ordinary Snake-man before his ascension. After a few days in this role, he realized he preferred being an ordinary Snake-man, having everything one desires without having to endure grievances or fulfill the Serpent Father’s war objectives.
