Chapter 994: Fusion
Boom.
The sudden tremor made Chu Liang turn around.
He sensed the spiritual energy coursing through the White Pagoda around him, and a strange feeling stirred within. Somehow, it felt as if he could alter it.
He had created the origin of Tuntun’s life essence himself, so that made sense. But what about the White Pagoda?
Is it simply because I am too familiar with the White Pagoda? Chu Liang wondered.
Chu Liang stood up and pressed his palm to the wall of the pagoda. He could feel an extraordinary number of origin particles surging through it, far more than what was normally found. It seemed that the higher the quality of an artifact, the more origin particles it contained. And with more particles came greater resistance. Moving them would require an immense amount of spiritual energy.
Boom.
A third thump rang out in the space, like the beat of a heart.
Chu Liang turned his hand over and held Deity Pan’s Bone in his palm.
Aside from Tuntun and the White Pagoda, the third thing resonating with Chu Liang was actually Deity Pan’s Bone!
What is going on?
Chu Liang felt that the Great Dao of Creation was like a towering mountain. He had only just begun to climb and was still far from even seeing the view on the top of the mountain.
Yet, as the resonance deepened, he began to sense something. A faint will stirred within both the White Pagoda and Deity Pan’s Bone.
They seemed to want to... fuse?
The thought gave him a jolt.
The White Pagoda was basically a pagoda spirit that came into existence after the Demon-Suppressing Pagoda merged with the original life essence of the Demon God. Deity Pan’s Bone, on the other hand, was a remnant of the pagoda’s actual structure. If the two were to merge, wouldn’t that mean the Demon-Suppressing Pagoda would be complete once more?
It was hard to say whether the fusion would make it stronger or weaker. Even so, the result of the fusion would surely make the White Pagoda powerful enough to reclaim its place at the top of the Catalog of the Mortal World’s Ten Thousand Treasures.
Why hadn’t they shown any sign of wanting to fuse before? Could it have been because he had not yet grasped the Great Dao of Creation at the time? That must have been the reason.
They had always longed to become one again, but without the right catalyst, they could not act on that desire. Only now, with his newfound understanding, could their wish finally be fulfilled.
Since both the White Pagoda and Deity Pan’s Bone sought to restore the broken pagoda, Chu Liang saw no reason to stop them.
He gathered his spiritual energy and guided the origin particles of the White Pagoda and Deity Pan’s Bone toward each other, setting the fusion into motion.
Boooooooom.
The moment the two made contact, a massive creation vortex appeared out of thin air. It seemed to draw in every origin particle in the area, and the force of its suction nearly knocked Chu Liang off his feet.
"This is bad..." he muttered, sensing danger at once.
If he got pulled in, there was no telling whether the fusion would succeed. But one thing was certain: he would be fused along with them!
Would he end up as the new spirit of the Demon-Suppressing Pagoda?
What he feared most was not even being granted that role, but becoming just another brick inside the tower. That would be far too tragic.
Chu Liang poured spiritual energy into the vortex with everything he had, hoping to speed up the fusion. But refining two top-tier legendary artifacts was no easy task.
It was like a great river crashing into the sea, an endless stream of origin particles colliding together. The energy ripples bursting from it could have destroyed the world if released outside!
Fortunately, the creation vortex absorbed all of the impact.
Of course, it did not bear that pressure for free. All of it was converted into a demand for Chu Liang’s spiritual energy, placing the entire burden on his shoulders.
"Aaaargh!" Chu Liang cried out, unable to hold it in.
At this point, it would be impossible to stop the fusion. This fusion had to succeed, or he would be pulled into the vortex! He had to hold out!
His cultivation energy was nearly drained, and he was on the verge of collapse. In desperation, he turned to the Large-Headed Dolls in front of him.
"Come on, help me out here!
"Just a little more effort. We're about to get a brand-new Demon-Suppressing Pagoda!"
Booooooom.
The Large-Headed Dolls burst forth with mist and lightning, forcing out a tremendous amount of spiritual energy and channeling it into Chu Liang. His recovery had always been faster than most, and it was all thanks to these Large-Headed Dolls.
However, ever since he had reached a higher cultivation realm, the advantage of having these dolls had rarely come into play. Most cultivators had such vast seas of qi that it was rare for them to run out of spiritual energy.
But now, that very situation had come upon him.
Just as the creation vortex was about to complete its cycle, the Large-Headed Dolls reached their limit. They had been completely drained and could no longer supply any spiritual energy.
Chu Liang felt his limbs grow weak and his head spin. In the end, he could not hold on any longer. His vision darkened, and he lost consciousness.
Clang.
…
"What was that noise?"
Di Nufeng groggily opened her eyes. She was just about to check the source of the sound when she rolled over, and a tall stack of booklets landed squarely on her face.
Rustle.
Di Nufeng scratched her head. "What the heck? "Did they send over more picture books again?"
She picked one up and flipped through it. "Why is everyone fully dressed in these? Ohh… This is the Mount Shu Sect disciple roster!"
A rush of memory came flooding back. Last night, the Discipline Master had handed her this stack of rosters and told her that the first duty of a grand peak master was to memorize the faces, names, and specialties of every member of the Mount Shu Sect, so she could recognize them immediately when needed.
Wang Xuanling could somewhat recognize every disciple at a glance, and Di Nufeng was expected to reach at least seventy or eighty percent of that level.
The Discipline Master had also told her to memorize everything by morning, and that she would be checking first thing when the sun came up.
Oh, no. Di Nufeng glanced at the time. The Discipline Master could show up at any moment!
The childhood trauma of being randomly quizzed on her studies came rushing back all at once.
Memorizing rosters overnight should have been an easy task for someone at the eighth realm. But when Di Nufeng opened the first page and saw the Alchemy Master, she immediately felt annoyed. One thing led to another, and she ended up drinking to wash away her frustration.
And somehow, she had kept drinking all the way until now.
Just as she was about to cram at the last minute, a cloud of mist landed outside, and the Discipline Master stepped through the door.
"Ah Feng, how’s it going? Done memorizing the roster?"
"All done!" Di Nufeng stood at attention in a flash.
"Hm?" The Discipline Master glanced at the rosters scattered across the floor and said flatly, "If you haven’t finished, just say so. I can test you another day. But if you say you’ve memorized it and fail to answer, I will punish you."
"I’m the grand peak master... Why do you get to punish me..." Di Nufeng mumbled with her head lowered and hands clasped behind her back.
"I’m in charge of enforcing the law in the sect," the Discipline Master snapped and glared. "It doesn’t matter if you’re the grand peak master. Even the sect leader gets punished if he breaks the rules. You can go ask Wang Xuanling whether I’ve ever whipped him before."
"I did finish memorizing it, just not the whole thing. Only the disciples from a few of the peaks," Di Nufeng mumbled, tapping one finger against the other in front of her chest.
"Which peaks did you memorize?" the Discipline Master demanded, refusing to let it go.
"Silver Sword Peak..." Di Nufeng slowly replied, "Treasured Pagoda Peak, Guardian Peak, Strange Rock Peak…"
"Aside from your Silver Sword Peak, all the other peaks you named do not have any disciples," the Discipline Master said with an irritated glance. "Forget the roster for now. Come with me. We’re going to meet the Tree Clan elders from the Southern Regions."
"Huh?" Di Nufeng looked up, but before she could react, the Discipline Master grabbed her by the collar and dragged her out of the pavilion.
"Greeting foreign guests may be the responsibility of the Foreign Affairs Hall, but as the grand peak master, you'll often need to receive them on behalf of the sect leader," the Discipline Master said as they flew through the air. "They probably didn’t dare notify you and sent them straight to the sect leader instead. Next time, I’ll have them inform you directly. Make sure you’re not late."
They rode the cloud back to Heaven-Reaching Peak and stopped outside a quiet chamber in the Boundless Palace. When they pushed open the door, they saw a room full of old men. Judging by their auras, every one of them was a demon.
Di Nufeng’s eyes lit up. "Demons?"
However, the Discipline Master quickly pulled her into a seat and turned to the guests with a polite smile.
"This is Mount Shu’s newly appointed grand peak master. If any of you have questions about the sect, feel free to ask her."
She then leaned in close to Di Nufeng’s ear and whispered, "Mount Shu Sect has always maintained good relations with the tree demons. This time, they’ve contacted several dozen tree clans from the Southern Regions. They want to become vassals under the Mount Shu Sect’s protection. If we handle this well, it could go a long way in securing our place as the number-one immortal sect. You must be polite and treat them with care."
Di Nufeng furrowed her brow as she looked over the group in front of her.
They are demons. They look dull like blocks of wood, and every single one of them is an old man.
But I’m supposed to be courteous? And treat them well?!
