Chapter 970: Chapter 970: Ruanruan’s Gentle and Kind Nature, She Felt Heartache
"Ahhh ahh ahh..."
The little girl, after being caught, let out cries of unbearable pain.
It was only when the other party opened their mouth that Qin Ruan saw that her tongue was gone, her mouth a blur of flesh and blood.
Her hands and feet were gone, her face mutilated by a sharp weapon, and even the tongue in her mouth had been cut off.
Qin Ruan looked at her with pitying eyes, a chilling anger rising from the depths of her heart.
She disregarded the little girl’s struggles and pulled her light, airy soul out from the tight corner.
The little girl opened her dark, gaping mouth, still screaming helplessly.
Meng Jie, huddled in the far back, was also howling with a heartrending scream.
The piercing sounds mingled together, too torturous for the ears.
Qin Ruan held the little girl in her arms and looked coldly at Meng Jie, who was crouching inside, and said sternly, "Stop howling, crawl out yourself!"
Meng Jie had long been so frightened that he was out of his wits, only knowing to shout and scream, his mouth uttering a jumble of pleas for mercy.
Seeing his state, Qin Ruan directed a strand of Nether Power into his body with the tip of her finger.
The next instant, Meng Jie maintained the posture of his wide-open mouth, but could no longer make a sound.
He stiffly twisted his head, met Qin Ruan’s calm, unemotional eyes, and then looked past her at Min Zhenghao and Afeng standing not far away.
Both teammates were battered, one holding a broken arm, the other with a bruised nose and swollen face, both looking like they had been through an inhumane beating.
"Why did you guys take so long to come?"
Meng Jie opened his mouth, looking like he was about to cry again.
Qin Ruan, comforting the little girl who had calmed down in her arms, stopped him coldly as he was about to cry, "Cry again, and I’ll throw you to the Puppets to feed!"
Meng Jie, who had not let out a complete cry, immediately clamped his mouth shut upon hearing her words.
Min Zhenghao stepped forward and began moving the piled-up tables and chairs, asking, "How did you get in there?"
"After I went downstairs, I kept feeling like something was following me, so I crawled in to hide from them, but who knew there would be a little girl crying in my ear, so scary, wuu wuu wuu..."
Towards the end, Meng Jie could not hold back his tears and started to cry.
He was too scared, having half-stepped through the Ghost Gate, that feeling of despair and helplessness made him think he’d end his life here today.
Min Zhenghao looked at him with a sympathetic glance, holding the wobbly legs of the tables and chairs to prevent them from collapsing, and sighed to Meng Jie, "Come out from inside first."
Logically, Meng Jie, having been rescued, should be scrambling out immediately.
But he did not move, squatting on the dirty floor motionless.
Min Zhenghao asked in confusion, "What’s wrong with you?"
Meng Jie hugged his own body, lowered his head, and began speaking with unbearable shame, "I, I..."
He struggled to speak for a long time, without saying a complete sentence.
Qin Ruan, holding the little girl in her arms, stepped back a few paces and said in a cool tone, "He wet himself."
"..."
"..."
The air fell into a suffocating silence.
Min Zhenghao’s expression gradually twisted, as if he was struggling to hold back.
Afeng’s eyes widened in disbelief, staring at Meng Jie crouching in the corner, his expression twisted from the effort to restrain himself.
Only Qin Ruan and the little girl remained calm and unmoved.
Qin Ruan, holding the little girl, gently placed her down with one hand supporting her waist. Her other hand hung down, fingers trailing threads of Nether Power that crept into the empty pant legs where the girl’s legs should have been.
What happened next was miraculous — the girl’s limbs regrew before their eyes, at a rate visible to the naked eye.
Once the girl’s legs could support her on the ground, Qin Ruan released her support from the girl’s lower back. With both hands, she released an even stronger surge of Nether Power to grow back the girl’s missing arms.
The little girl looked on in amazement, her eyes wide and round. Though still pitch-black and chilling, her pupils sparkled with vitality, and her astonished expression was indescribably cute.
Qin Ruan bent down to meet the girl’s gaze, her slender pale fingers touching the horrific scar on her cheek.
Her delicate, doll-like face was now restored to its original state, except that the child was too thin, with little flesh on her cheeks.
Qin Ruan touched her purple lips and asked in a gentle voice, "Can you open your mouth for me, please?"
Perhaps intimidated by her miraculous abilities, the girl obediently opened her mouth, revealing a horrific sight of torn flesh and blood.
Qin Ruan’s eyebrows furrowed slightly, pity shining in her eyes, as her trembling palm touched the girl’s mouth.
After just a few seconds, she withdrew her hand.
The girl’s mouth was now like that of a normal child, complete with a lifelike tongue.
Qin Ruan, touching the worn cloth the girl was wearing, could not stop her hand from trembling as she asked tenderly, "Can you speak now?"
The little girl didn’t look at Qin Ruan but instead looked down, blinking her pitch-black eyes and staring at her own hands and feet in wonder. After a long while, she slowly shook her head.
Qin Ruan continued, "You don’t belong here, is it okay if I take you away?"
The little girl looked up, revealing a beautiful face that was terribly gaunt.
She stared at Qin Ruan with a blank expression, as if she didn’t understand the meaning.
Qin Ruan affectionately stroked her head and softly explained, "I will take you to a place where you should be, where you will have a home with a father and mother, where you can eat your fill, where there’s no smoke of war, no more killings, and no more horrible people to bully you."
As she listened, tears of blood rolled down from the eyes of the little girl.
Drop by drop, the tears fell onto the thickly dust-laden ground, forming spheres.
Min Zhenghao finally pulled Meng Jie from his hiding spot, and the two stood with Afeng. They watched, wide-eyed, as Qin Ruan interacted with a girl who cast no shadow and wore coarse hemp garments reminiscent of wartime attire from television dramas.
They had already glimpsed the girl’s dreadful condition and now watched, astounded and with tingling scalps, as her limbs regrew in moments. This scene filled them with both awe and horror, their skin crawling with goosebumps.
The shock of witnessing a Puppet was overwhelming, one after the other.
Meng Jie, in particular, had the strongest reaction, collapsing onto the ground, raising a cloud of dust.
Min Zhenghao and Afeng covered their mouths and noses, looking at Meng Jie with a mixture of speechlessness and disdain.
Meng Jie, not understanding why they weren’t afraid, pointed a trembling hand towards Qin Ruan and the little girl and exclaimed, "There’s, there’s a Puppet, don’t you see it?!"
"We see it."
Min Zhenghao spoke calmly, not betraying the fear he showed on the surface.
If one ignored his trembling legs, he might have seemed more convincing.
Afeng added calmly, "There’s more upstairs, everywhere."
"Damn!" Meng Jie cursed under his breath, hiding his face with his dirty hands, not daring to look at Qin Ruan and the little girl.
Seeing the little girl’s continuous tears, Qin Ruan reached out to wipe the bloodstained tears from her cheeks and asked tenderly, "Would you like to leave this place and find a warm home?"
The little girl kept crying, shaking her head at Qin Ruan.
Qin Ruan patiently asked, "Why?" She carefully touched the girl’s cheek.
Heavy sadness pervaded the girl’s blood-soaked eyes, and deep within them lay a profound hatred. The eerie aura that lingered around her, fueled by this hatred, made her appear even more
