Chapter 931: Chapter 931 Ruanruan: That’s not something a human would do!
Huo Yunjiao sat by the bed, right hand picking up a piece of black ox-tongue pastry, her left hand underneath, lifting it to Qin Ruan’s mouth.
Qin Ruan had just bitten into it when her expression changed, and she spat it into the palm held under her chin.
She complained childishly, "It tastes terrible, this isn’t from Guilan Square’s ox-tongue pastries!"
Her expression full of deep resentment, she glared at the black ox-tongue pastry in the third master’s hand.
Huo Yunjiao looked down at the pastry crumbs in her palm, her temples throbbing.
He knew Guilan Square was a little shop in West City that had been open for over twenty years. Qin Ruan loved the pastries from there, especially the shop’s black ox-tongue pastries.
Currently, they were in Sea City, and the delivery from the Capital City took so long that it was nearly dawn.
Huo Yunjiao put back the barely eaten ox-tongue pastry onto the plate and cleaned his palm, wiping his hands with a napkin on the side.
He then lifted a bowl of lobster noodles to Qin Ruan’s lips, "Don’t like the ox-tongue pastry, how about a few bites of the noodles?"
The deliberately gentle and cajoling tone, as if dealing with a helpless child.
Qin Ruan frowned; she didn’t really want to eat, perhaps because the man in front of her was too gentle, but she still reluctantly opened her mouth.
This time she didn’t spit it out, but after a couple of bites, she began to criticize again, claiming the lobster noodles were not as good as the ones from West City’s food stalls.
She fussed for nearly an hour and barely ate a few bites of the noodles before leaning against the headboard and closing her eyes.
Huo Yunjiao watched her head slowly sink, then laid her flat on the bed, stood by the bed, and hurriedly removed his clothes damp with the sea’s moisture before stepping into the bathroom.
Having bathed Qin Ruan earlier, he was soaked through, and it was no small feat to hold out until now to clean up.
Half an hour later, Huo Yunjiao emerged from the bathroom in a bathrobe.
He came to the bedside, gazed down at the sweetly sleeping Qin Ruan, picked up the phone next to him, and made a call.
Once connected, a cold, commanding voice resounded in the bedroom, "Withdraw another two billion from my account and invest it in the foundation established by Madam. Expand the scope of this round of child assistance."
A surprised voice came from the phone, "Mr. Huo, at this rate, the foundation will need at least ten billion annually."
Huo Yunjiao’s eyes, filled with tenderness, watched Qin Ruan, and he said softly, "Just follow the instructions, and also intensively inspect those orphanages being assisted. Any discrepancies must be rigorously investigated."
The voice on the other end replied respectfully, "I will conduct a thorough screening."
"Inform the local office if there is any issue, no leniency in punishment!"
His voice turned excessively sharp, making Qin Ruan stir uneasily in the bed.
Seeing this, Huo Yunjiao immediately hung up the phone.
After observing that Qin Ruan had calmed down, he quietly sat by the bed, towel drying his damp hair, his deep eyes intently watching her serene face.
Since investigating Qin Ruan’s experiences in the West City orphanage, he had established a foundation under her name, investing nearly a billion until now.
If there were karma and reincarnation, this could be considered his way of accumulating merit and doing good deeds for Qin Ruan.
Her first eighteen years had been too harsh, invoking pity and making him unable to resist wanting to protect her, to treat her even better.
...
The next day, Qin Ruan opened her eyes to blinding sunlight.
She raised her hand to block her eyes, squinting as she surveyed the unfamiliar surroundings, with fragments of the previous night slowly surfacing in her mind.
From accompanying Wu Fan to a tavern to drown his sorrows, to how Fu Ziqiu had teased her, how she had played along, and the subsequent chaos and the third master’s arrival.
Qin Ruan also remembered how, after seeing the third master, she had insisted on having lobster noodles and black ox-tongue pastries.
When the food arrived, she had complained they were not as good as the ones in West City and whimsically grumbled at the third master.
She couldn’t clearly remember the memories that followed or know at what point she had fallen asleep.
Memory returned, and Qin Ruan’s face instantly reddened.
She pulled up the quilt to cover her head, feeling utterly embarrassed and ashamed.
Was she really the person making a scene last night?
And why had the Third Master come to Sea City? She seemed to have also seen Huo Yao and Huo Anqi.
Thinking of her two precious sons, Qin Ruan lifted the quilt and looked around for her kids.
"Awake?" A pleasant, smiling voice reached her ears.
Qin Ruan followed the sound and saw a man with a lazy posture leaning against the door frame, holding a cup of water.
His calm demeanor suggested he had been there a while.
She sat up with her hair in disarray and asked with a dazed face, "When did you get here?"
"While you were covering your head with the quilt."
Huo Yunjiao approached the bed step by step, holding the water cup.
As he neared, Qin Ruan felt an unparalleled awkwardness; she wished she could burrow a hole in the bed and hide inside it.
Those embarrassing memories from last night were torturing every nerve of hers right now.
Huo Yunjiao stood by the bed, extending the water cup to Qin Ruan’s lips, "Want some water? Waking up from a hangover can make one thirsty."
And indeed, Qin Ruan was thirsty.
She obediently opened her mouth and drank half the cup of water.
Huo Yunjiao placed the water cup on the nightstand and sat beside Qin Ruan, tidying her messy hair.
Her body was tense, afraid to make a move.
The man gently inquired by her ear, "Ruanruan, do you know what day it is today?"
"What day..."
She cut off mid-sentence as she suddenly remembered what Huo Zhi had told her before she left Capital City.
Today was New Year’s Eve; tomorrow would be the Spring Festival!
Seeing her bewildered and shocked face, Huo Yunjiao raised his eyebrows, his voice purposely deepened, "It seems Ruanruan has remembered. I don’t know what you were thinking, running out during such a major festival.
Are you dissatisfied with me? Or do the kids not appeal to you? To heartlessly leave the three of us in Capital City."
Though his voice was as gentle as water, it sent a shiver down Qin Ruan’s spine, making her involuntarily bristle.
She looked up, meeting the man’s drooping gaze.
This person had deep-set eyes, and those lazy, profound eyes seemed even more dangerous now.
Huo Yunjiao lightly chuckled, affectionately flicking the tip of her nose, "Is this question hard to answer?"
"No!" Driven by a survival instinct, Qin Ruan immediately retorted, "Huo Qi’s situation was more severe, a matter of life and death; saving a life is more meritorious than building a seven-tier pagoda!"
Huo Yunjiao smiled, reclining back on the headboard, his innate elegance and nobility evident in every gesture.
He subdued the hint of danger in his eyes and spoke indifferently, "So that’s how it is. I thought you were angry with me.
On my way here, I was reflecting on whether I had done anything excessive. I racked my brain, but couldn’t figure it out; it turns out the problem wasn’t with me but that Ruanruan is too kind-hearted."
Hearing such words that twisted the truth, Qin Ruan’s lips twitched uncontrollably.
Indeed, you hadn’t done anything excessive, that was definitely not something anyone would do!
