Chapter 855: Chapter 855: Provoked the Wrong Person and the Debt Once Owed
Qin Ruan stood at the doorway, sizing up the middle-aged man with a gaze that paused briefly behind him, hinting at a profound meaning in the depth of her eyes.
She curved her lips, smiling, "I have come to visit Xia Yunchen, the Emperor of Shadow."
The middle-aged man nodded upon hearing her words, "He’s inside the room. You may enter."
He adjusted his tie, his face anxious, swiftly walking towards the door.
As they brushed past each other, Qin Ruan sensed a cold aura emanating from him.
Her hand, hanging by her side, twitched slightly, and a strand of Black Evil Energy wafted from the middle-aged man, twining around the tips of Qin Ruan’s fingers.
The door was opened and then crisply closed.
The cool aura passed swiftly and vanished in an instant.
As the middle-aged man just left, a familiar figure emerged from the bedroom.
Dressed in a black brocade robe, his long hair draped over his shoulders and bound with a golden ribbon, Changyuan, with his rebellious demeanor, fixed his red eyes on Qin Ruan and Huo Zhi.
His voice was flat as he greeted, "You’ve arrived."
Even though his tone was as usual, Qin Ruan distinctly detected a trace of affection.
Her expression flickered with surprise for a moment before returning to normal, "I heard Xia Yunchen woke up; I came to see him."
Changyuan stepped aside with his tall stature, "The master’s body hasn’t completely recovered, he’s lying inside. Come in."
Qin Ruan, not noticing the unusual way he referred to the master, walked into the bedroom with steady steps, her eyes immediately locking with those of the man lying in the sickbed.
Those cold, moon-like eyes sparkled with excitement and thrill, yet also sharp pain—profound, heavy, and complex.
Xia Yunchen, wearing a hospital gown, leaned on the sickbed, his lips quivering slightly, a bitter smile emerging on his pale face.
Qin Ruan halted her steps as she entered the room, a wave of indescribable bitterness rising within her.
Not for any other reason but for the look of profound joy and sorrow on Xia Yunchen’s face, which inexplicably made her feel heartbroken for him.
"Ruanruan, you’re here."
Xia Yunchen gazed intently at Qin Ruan, his fervent eyes sweeping across her face, lingering on her unwilling to shift away.
Ruanruan?
Qin Ruan raised her exquisitely arched brows slightly, taking a gift of condolence from Huo Zhi behind her and walked to the bedside.
She placed the gift on the table and turned to look at the man in the bed, chuckling softly, "The Emperor of Shadow seems to be recovering well."
Xia Yunchen still stared intently at her, shaking his head on hearing her words, "There wasn’t much of a problem to begin with."
Qin Ruan sat casually in the seat beside the bed, her piercing gaze icily directed at him.
"I’ve met you only a handful of times; aside from family, no one has ever called me by my nickname. Isn’t the Emperor of Shadow overstepping a bit?"
Standing across the bed, Changyuan tensed on hearing this, his red pupils constricted sharply, fists clenched tightly as his intense gaze focused on Qin Ruan.
Xia Yunchen’s pale lips curled into a faint smile, his eyes tenderly watching Qin Ruan, clear as flowing water, seemingly able to inadvertently penetrate one’s thoughts.
He lifted his hand from the bed cover, slowly reaching towards Qin Ruan.
Seeing this, Qin Ruan’s alert eyes flashed a dangerous signal.
Before she could decide whether to step back or to swipe away his hand, Xia Yunchen’s hand had already touched the top of her hair.
That warm palm gently rubbed Qin Ruan’s head, his soothing voice following, "Every time I see you, it feels as if I am seeing my sister."
Qin Ruan disregarded the hand on her head, narrowing her eyes as she asked, "Does the Emperor of Shadow have a sister?"
She remembered that Xia Yunchen’s parents had both passed away, and he was their only child, now left without any relatives, utterly alone.
Xia Yunchen, with a smile in his eyes, fixed his gaze on her and spoke in a gentle tone, "There are."
Qin Ruan tilted her head to avoid his hand and asked again, "Do I look a lot like your sister?"
Xia Yunchen pondered for a moment and then shook his head with a smile, "Not really. She was mischievous and always getting into trouble. Every time, I would dutifully clean up after her. That girl had a temper, too. Scold her a bit, and she’d dare to run away from home. From childhood to adulthood, she constantly got into all kinds of troubles, until..."
His tone gradually lowered, hiding a bit of grief, indescribably bitter.
"Your sister passed away?"
Xia Yunchen shook his head, his aura of sadness retracted, his gaze tenderly on Qin Ruan as he continued his previous words, "She crossed paths with someone she shouldn’t have, and is now repaying debts she once owed."
Qin Ruan smiled ambiguously, "But how do I remember you having no siblings? A sister suddenly popping up, could she be a cousin or something?"
Xia Yunchen lowered his eyes and said in a soft yet firm voice, "She’s my biological sister, my only biological sister."
Changyuan suddenly spoke, "Master, it’s time for you to rest."
Emotions of struggle swirled in the lowered eyes of Xia Yunchen. When he looked up again, the complexity and sadness in his eyes had been retracted.
He resumed his usual composed and courteous demeanor, and said to Qin Ruan with an easy smile, "Miss Qin, I was still caught up in the role, my apologies for the confusion."
Qin Ruan: "Caught up in the role?"
Xia Yunchen: "I’m planning on retiring from the industry. I haven’t finished shooting my last film yet; it’s just the final touches. Just finished reading the script and haven’t stepped out of the story yet."
Worried that Qin Ruan might not believe him, he pointed towards the script on the table.
Qin Ruan was not shy to reach out, taking the script from the table and casually flipping it open, coincidentally landing on the lines highlighted with a fluorescent pen.
[I am your legitimate sister, brother, why won’t you save me?]
[Ah nin, you colluded with disgraced officials for the Fourth Prince, framing loyal officials, tarnishing the Royal Family’s reputation, with numerous lives on your hands, all your deeds must be paid by you personally.]
[Brother, I am your only sister, your legitimate sister!]
Upon seeing these lines, Qin Ruan’s eyes flashed with surprise. She closed the script, placed it on the table, and smiled at Xia Yunchen, "No wonder."
The oddity of Xia Yunchen was thus glossed over casually.
He picked up an apple that had been washed from the fruit plate and handed it to Qin Ruan, "Miss Qin, what made you think of visiting me?"
Qin Ruan took a bite of the apple, the flesh crisp, tangy, and refreshing.
She mumbled unclearly with her mouth full, "Heard you woke up, came to check on you. Your agent said acting was your lifelong passion, why the sudden decision to quit?"
Xia Yunchen spoke indifferently, "I’ve acted half my life, I’m exhausted and tired, needed some rest."
Qin Ruan deeply agreed, "It seems the matter with Jin Ling has indeed had a big impact on you."
Xia Yunchen did not voice any objection.
Qin Ruan looked up at Changyuan, realizing he was exceptionally docile today, too docile indeed.
After finishing the apple, Qin Ruan casually tossed the core into the trash bin.
She stood up and said to Xia Yunchen, "I’ve seen how you are, and there are people waiting for me at home, I won’t disturb your rest any longer."
Seeing her about to leave, an urgency flickered in Xia Yunchen’s eyes. Seemingly grasping for topics, he suddenly asked, "I heard you are expecting twins?"
Qin Ruan hummed in response, a hint of perplexity flashing in her black eyes, "What about it?"
In Xia Yunchen’s eyes gathered a intense, fiery glint, "I quite like kids. Could I meet them after I’m discharged?"
Qin Ruan stared at him, making Xia Yunchen feel quite uncomfortable, unable to help but laugh, "You like children so much, why not find a woman, marry, and have your own?"
