Chapter 829: Chapter 829: Third Master’s Thoughtful Tenderness, Flaunting Affection in Front of the Elders
Qin Mei leaned against the door with his arms crossed, a roguish smile still hanging on his face, "You’ve been living quite freely, sleeping until noon without anyone daring to disturb you."
"Cough cough..." Qin Ruan looked quite uncomfortable.
If it hadn’t been for Third Master, she wouldn’t have gotten up so late.
Qin Mei, unknowing of human affairs, was already of age.
Seeing the flush on his sister’s face and the ambiguous marks peeking through the collar of her nightgown, he immediately understood everything.
His face changed color but quickly returned to calm. His tone weirdly asked, "The Yan Family is leaving, do you want to see them off?"
Qin Ruan, "They’re leaving?"
Qin Mei’s tone was cold, "They’ve been waiting since early morning and insisted on seeing you before leaving."
"Why didn’t anyone call me?"
"The Third Master didn’t allow it. He said you exerted yourself last night saving Old Mr. Yan and that you weren’t feeling well because of the physical strain."
"You can’t just let people wait." Qin Ruan got up briskly, "Big Brother, I’ll go wash up and change my clothes. You tell them I’ll be right there."
Qin Mei was displeased, "What’s the rush? If they want to wait, let them wait."
Qin Ruan turned back to look at him, her eyes and brows revealing confusion, "Why do you have such hostility towards the Yan Family?"
Qin Mei scoffed coldly, "If they genuinely sought their daughter, how could they not find their mother? With the Yan Family’s capability, many things could have been avoided, Mother might not have died so early, and you wouldn’t have suffered so much in West City."
The wealth and power of the Yan Family were on par with the Huo Family within the country.
If it had been someone else, they would have been ecstatic to cling to such relatives, but Qin Mei displayed complete rejection; it was his demons.
Qin Ruan raised her eyebrows, saying earnestly, "Big Brother, the Yan Family might owe our mother, but they owe nothing to you, me, or Old Brother.
Old Mr. Yan is nominally our great-grandfather, and the two brothers of the Yan Family are our uncles. Whether we acknowledge them or not is our choice, but the proper courtesies must not be omitted. Now, we are the face of our father."
Qin Mei blinked, understanding something, and nodded reluctantly, "I understand."
"Go on, I’ll be ready soon."
Qin Ruan entered the bathroom, ignoring the suggestive marks all over her body, and washed up as quickly as possible.
Once she had changed, she opened the bedroom door to see Xueqiu squatting by the door.
The little creature was licking its paw. Hearing the noise, it looked up, its emerald-green eyes staring straight at her.
Qin Ruan chuckled, "What are you doing here?"
She remembered that Xueqiu nearly always stuck by her brother and that the cat was quite afraid of her, seldom approaching her.
Xueqiu stood up, its cat tail wagging twice, "Meow meow—"
Qin Ruan frowned slightly, "Were there other people in the hotel last night?"
Xueqiu raised its proud head, uttering a low "Meow!"
"Who was it?"
"Meow meow—"
"Did you see their face clearly?"
"Meow—"
After the long dialogue between human and cat, Qin Ruan’s cold eyes narrowed. Without much expression or movement, she emanated a shiver-inducing chill.
"I understand now."
She started walking down the stairs.
Last night at the Imperial Court Hotel, someone had been spying on Yan Xihu and Yan Xirong, and their moves were quite peculiar.
This person had quickly left after she appeared.
Downstairs in the lobby.
Old Mr. Yan had completely changed from last night’s dying demeanor. His face was flushed, and he looked eagerly at the two babies in Old Mr. Huo’s lap and in Huo Hongxing’s arms.
Huo Yao and Huo Anqi were so likable: the brothers were both cute and well-behaved.
Any family would spoil such clever and charming children to death.
Seeing how much Old Mr. Huo doted on his two great-grandsons, Old Mr. Yan felt envious and wanted to hold them too.
Yan Xirong had already woken, and his body had not fully recovered; his complexion was still pale.
However, compared to yesterday’s half-dead appearance, he seemed much more spirited today.
He and Yan Xihu were talking and laughing with Qin Anguo and Qin Jingcen, and the atmosphere was harmonious.
Only Yunjiao and Qin Mei were busy with their own things.
The former, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, appeared scholarly and refined. Holding a tablet, his expression was solemn and meticulous as his jade-like fingertips occasionally slid across the screen.
Qin Mei, on the other hand, leaned lazily on the sofa, staring at the cell phone he held up.
From Ruanruan’s angle, she could see the news webpage he was browsing. As his fingertips slid on the screen, she could even catch glimpses of images flashing by.
"Ruanruan is up. Did you sleep well last night?"
The first to notice Qin Ruan was Yan Xihu.
Seeing his extraordinary niece, who had saved both her father and brother from death, he was somewhat excited.
A flicker of discomfort crossed Qin Ruan’s face, awkwardly greeted by her elders first thing in the morning to ask if she had slept well.
She valued her dignity, and she did not have a thick skin; the question was out of place on all accounts.
Qin Ruan suppressed the awkwardness and restraint welling up inside her and walked down the stairs, asking, "I heard you’re leaving?"
Yan Xihu nodded: "This morning we received news from Northern England. A key member of the Brucester family who had joined the Black Wing died, and no one at home can manage the family affairs. We plan to leave today."
Qin Ruan’s expression grew solemn: "Died?"
This was unexpected.
The Yan family was also baffled: "The body was dumped at the doorstep of the Brucester estate, found this morning; the death was inexplicable."
Qin Ruan thought of the person surveilling the Yan family in the hotel last night.
Xueqiu only mentioned seeing a figure, not the face, but what was certain was that the person was very elusive and quick.
Qin Ruan consciously sat down next to Yunjiao and, with a furrowed brow, looked at the Yan family members: "Last night at the Imperial Court Hotel, someone was surveilling you. Did you know?"
Yan Xihu frowned: "Surveillance?"
Qin Ruan nodded: "I can confirm there was someone watching you all. As for who it is and what they look like, I don’t know. The Brucester family had made a move against the Yan family; it’s unlikely they would back off so easily. Now that their main support is dead, what do you think is the reason behind this?"
Qin Ruan had barely finished speaking when a bowl of tempting seafood porridge was placed before her.
Each grain of rice mixed with green fish, shrimp, squid, and sea cucumber sent out an irresistible aroma, awakening the appetite in Qin Ruan’s stomach.
Yunjiao tossed her tablet aside casually; her slender, attractive hand held a bowl of seafood porridge.
Unconcerned with the elders around, her thin lips curved into a soft smile as she spoke gently to Qin Ruan: "You must be hungry after missing breakfast. How about some porridge to fill you up?"
Qin Ruan was indeed hungry, unable to refuse such an appetizing bowl of porridge.
She took the bowl with her hand and began eating in small bites.
Old Mr. Huo, Old Mr. Yan, and the other elders remained silent, as if they had seen nothing.
Perhaps to ease Qin Ruan’s awkwardness, they played with the children or continued their conversations as before.
Only Yan Xirong, after hearing Qin Ruan’s words, showed a contemplative expression, with a sharp, unreadable darkness in his eyes.
