Chapter 796: Chapter 796: Shao Xujie’s Last Words, Cannot Escape Guilt and Will Not Die in Peace
Learning that Qin Ruan intended to mind-search him, Shao Xujie hesitated slightly before finally nodding his consent.
His eyes subconsciously darted towards Lu Han, who was leaning against the interrogation room table.
Lu Han, picking up on his anxious expression, comforted him in soft tones: "Madam will be careful. She won’t put you in danger."
Shao Xujie clenched his fists tightly, looking frantic: "Lu, if something happens to me..."
Qin Ruan cut him off: "That won’t be possible!"
She had confidence in her abilities.
Shao Xujie, visibly tense, licked his lips and pressed: "If anything does happen...I wouldn’t want to be burdened with a murder charge. If I did it, I would own up to it. If I was manipulated by an unknown entity, I wouldn’t be able to face the charge!"
Lu Han walked over to Shao Xujie, heavily patted his shoulder, reassuring him: "Don’t be negative. Remember your duty. Remember your mission. We’ve been working together for so long. You must trust that we won’t let any guilty person off the hook and we won’t accuse any innocent person wrongly."
Shao Xujie nodded emphatically, his eyes welled up with tears, his bloodless lips pressed tight.
Qin Ruan rolled up her sleeves and sauntered over to the pair—the former superiors and subordinates.
"I’m about to start, it might hurt a bit, but you’ll get through it."
She was speaking to Shao Xujie.
The latter slowly closed his eyes, surrendered to fate, and said: "I am ready."
Seeing his determined demeanor, Qin Ruan chuckled, "Relax, don’t be so tense."
He was making it seem like she was about to do something nefarious.
Shao Xujie’s tense body relaxed slightly.
Qin Ruan’s gentle voice echoed in his ears: "Think back to your memories of Shanlu Village last year. It will be easier for me to search for the images you may have missed."
Shao Xujie nodded with his eyes closed: "Ok..."
Qin Ruan extended her slender, fair hand, aiming for Shao Xujie’s forehead.
As her fingertip touched his sweaty skin, a powerful force pierced into Shao Xujie’s mind.
"Mmm..."
"Ahhhh..."
At first, he managed to withstand it, but the cries of pain soon followed.
Qin Ruan closed her eyes, searching as a third party through Shao Xujie’s memories of Shanlu Village from the previous year.
The memory was set against a dark sky.
Dressed in casual clothes, Shao Xujie looked sunnier. He was walking on a bumpy dirt path alongside five others, a path rutted by years of rainwater.
As the sun had already set and the sky was dark, Shao Xujie didn’t see a puddle in the path and stepped in it.
He stared at his muddy shoe, his face fell, he sighed in resignation.
He couldn’t help complaining, "What kind of place is this? I’ve never seen such a rotten environment."
A man of similar height next to Shao Xujie, looking a bit older, replied with a gentle smile: "Young master, there are many places like this around. Difficult-to-reach villages with worse conditions exist."
Shao Xujie was taken aback, he couldn’t imagine a place worse than this, "Brother Tao, you’ve seen it?"The middle-aged man nodded, sighing, "A few years ago, while capturing a fugitive, I went to a village without electricity, let alone proper housing. They were truly cut off from the world..."
Three villagers wearing old-fashioned clothes were leading the way, compared to them, the seemingly casual attire of Shao Xujie and Brother Tao stood out.
Soon, they arrived at Shanlu Village.
Back in the interrogation room, Qin Ruan frowned, quickening her search for the possible image of Li Xuemei in Shao Xujie’s memory.
She didn’t have much confidence about whether she could find Li Xuemei’s image or not.
If Li Xuemei did happen to be in Shao Xujie’s vicinity, but too far away, Qin Ruan would not be able to see her through the third-person perspective of mind-searching.
However, she could only try her best now.
Shao Xujie and Brother Tao, led by local officers, entered a tile-roofed house and swiftly handcuffed a man with a rough beard.
The man glared at them fiercely, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
After overcoming countless difficulties to finally apprehend the suspect, Shao Xujie breathed a sigh of relief.
He walked up to the man, slapped his face, "Boy, murder is a crime. Even if you’re at the ends of the earth, we can still bring you back."
The burly man sneered and spat at Shao Xujie, "Ptui!"
"Damn!"
Shao Xujie wiped his face, his complexion instantly darkening.
Brother Tao laughed and walked over to him, "Why bother him? He’ll be executed on returning."
The implication was, why hold a grudge against a man facing death.
Shao Xujie’s face reddened a bit, "For him, this is the first time I’ve been put through such hardship. Can’t I take some of it out on him?"
He bent down to sniff his palm, a sour smell stink hit him, making his expression even more unpleasant.
Seeing his face, Brother Tao looked worried, "Are you still febrile?"
Throughout the journey, Shao Xujie might have been suffering from travel sickness or simply unfamiliar with the hardship, he started feeling unwell and feverish halfway through.
Shao Xujie exhaled, "I’m fine, I’ll wash my face somewhere."
Brother Tao grabbed his arm, "It’s already dark, where will you find water, just wait for me!"
He turned towards the local police and after a brief communication, fetched a basin of water from the well in the courtyard.
With the cold water, Shao Xujie finally managed to wash off the sickening smell.
The team left with the suspect in custody.
Halfway through, Shao Xujie needed to relieve himself.
The surroundings were filled with thick trees and rolling hills.
All around was pitch black, which Shao Xujie found quite creepy, so he found a local officer to accompany him.
Feeling embarrassed about having someone watch him, he walked to the edge of the woods and told the officer, "You can wait here, I’ll be quick."
As he spoke, he loosened his belt and walked into the forest.
In the dead of the night, the sound of running water echoed in the woods.
The sound was hurried, accompanied by deliberately suppressed sighs.
After relieving himself, Shao Xujie quickly tidied up and turned to leave.
Suddenly, a faint sound entered his ears.
He turned back to look into the depths of the forest, which seemed like a human-devouring black hole, from where a ferocious beast might charge out.
Shao Xujie stood still for a while and listened. Nothing else unusual except for the rustling sound of the wind through the trees.
Feeling somewhat weak due to the fever, he thought he had been hallucinating, turned around, and walked away.
In this rural forest area, there could indeed be wild beasts, like wolves or wild boars, for example.
Shao Xujie’s footsteps quickened.
Just as he was about to leave the woods, another unusual sound was heard from behind.
This time it was even clearer than before, like the panting of a wild beast.
Shao Xujie stood still, staring into the depths of the forest, his eyebrows slightly furrowed, wondering if there might really be a wolf.
The officer waiting at the edge of the forest hurried over. In heavily accented Mandarin, he asked if Shao Xujie was alright.
Despite the headache caused by the fever, Shao Xujie turned back and asked the man, "I just heard some noise inside, should we go check it out?"
Perhaps due to his profession, he felt the need to investigate any abnormality.
The officer, with a puzzled look on his honest face, asked, "What noise?"
Shao Xujie explained, "Like something’s there, I just heard a sound."
Hearing this, the officer laughed and waved it off, saying that this area often had wild boar sightings, which are aggressive and best avoided.
Unfamiliar with the area, Shao Xujie didn’t mind and simply turned to leave.
Nobody saw that deep in the dense forest, under the sparse moonlight, someone was being held against the soft yellow soil in a humiliating posture.
Her mouth was covered by a muscular hand, cheeks streaming with tears of desperation and helplessness, and her eyes filled with resentment and unwillingness.
Under the thin moonlight, her face could be seen clearly.
It was none other than Li Xuemei, who had just returned to the village.
Kneeling on both knees, completely disheveled, she was cruelly assaulted, taken to the depths of an unseen abyss.
As the silhouettes of Shao Xujie and his companions faded into the distance, an indistinct crying sound, after an unknown amount of time, startled the insects and birds around.
At first, the sobs were sporadic, requiring one to prick up their ears to hear.
But as the sound became increasingly uncontrollable, as if without any regard, it intensified.
