Chapter 787: Chapter 787: Master Huo Has a Keen Sense of Smell, Intervenes in the Cabinet to Protect His Beloved Wife
Qin Ruan rubbed her forehead, her expression indescribably complex, the glimmer in the depths of her eyes a chilling cold.
If the first two cases were related to Shengshi Academy, it could be explained as a mere coincidence.
But now, with three cases from tonight all linked to Shengshi Academy, anyone would suspect there was something hidden from the public eye.
She had no interest in solving the cases, but her instincts told her something about Shengshi Academy was off.
The Underworld King had just mentioned to her to keep an eye on Shengshi Academy, and now, all three of tonight’s murders were linked to it.
She began to suspect that there was malicious force at work.
Lu Han started to go over the details of the murder case in South City: "The victim in the South City was Tao Man, from a scholarly family and a graduate of Shengshi Academy. Tao Man loved to travel, photography, and food.
According to the investigations conducted by the information team in South City, Tao Man was in a relationship with Bai Xiaofei, who was killed by Shao Xujie in East City. Bai Xiaofei and Tao Man had been together for less than a year, but they broke up before they graduated."
Qin Ruan seemed surprised: "Is information gathered this quickly nowadays?"
Lu Han’s eyebrows rose slightly: "These past few years, in order to speed up investigations and reduce casualties, the system for the information team has become increasingly advanced. Unless someone is off-the-grid, everyone’s life details have been recorded."
Qin Ruan’s mouth opened slightly, thinking of something before gently closing it again.
She remembered the eighteen years she spent in West City, when she was off-the-grid herself.
She wondered if her experiences during those eighteen years had been recorded in any files by the relevant departments.
...
The Huo Mansion.
As Qin Ruan was leaving, Lord Huo stood by his bedroom’s floor-to-ceiling windows, watching her get into Lu Han’s car and drive off.
Only when the car disappeared from his sight did he make a phone call, dialing Huo Qiang who was in Huo Yirong’s small building.
Huo Qiang, his eyes red and bloodshot, answered the phone: "Third Lord?"
A deep, cool voice commanded: "Huo Qiang, issue a directive in my name through the Cabinet."
"Go ahead."
"Coordinate all the manpower resources from every department in Capital City to assist the Madam over the coming days..."
...
The Criminal Investigation Department.
It was nearly four in the morning when Lu Han and Qin Ruan arrived.
Considering that one of their own was now considered a criminal suspect, those in charge were taking the cases that had happened tonight very seriously, and many people were called in to work the night shift.
Two men dressed in uniforms stood at the entrance, their faces grave and anxious.
Upon spotting Lu Han getting out of the car, they first appeared stunned but moments later, their eyes lit up in surprise.
"Boss!"
Recognizing his former subordinates, Lu Han approached them and asked: "How is Shao Xujie?"
The slightly overweight man responded despondently: "Still being interrogated. Bureau Chief Yuan is leading the questioning himself; I reckon Jay will have a hard time."
The "hard time" didn’t refer to physical torment, as coercion was not allowed nowadays; however, there were plenty of psychological torment methods were at their disposal.
Lu Han pursed his lips: "Take me to him."
Yuan Zhiwei was someone he didn’t know well, put in his position by nepotism after Lu Han left. Yet, in a publicized event where a popular internet celebrity was stalked and murdered at home, Yuan Zhiwei had put on quite a show on television.
He speculated that this man was probably quite interested in fame and fortune.
Standing opposite Lu Han was a slim, tall man. He threw his cigarette on the ground and extinguished it with his foot.
"Alright!"
The man’s eyes shone brightly as he began to lead the way to the interrogation room.
Qin Ruan followed them with Huo Zhi and Lin Hao in tow.
The Interrogation Room.
Shao Xujie was wearing thin pajamas, dirty cotton slippers on his feet.
His hair was a mess, his eyes red and bloodshot. His expression was determined, but his eyes showed a mix of coldness and confused bewilderment.
Everything that had occurred tonight felt like a dream to him.
He was usually the one interrogating the criminals, but now he was in their place.
This reversal of roles was hard for him to accept.
How could he possibly be a murderer? It was simply impossible!
The murder weapon, a gun, had been surrendered when he left Criminal Investigation Department; it should not have been carried with him at all times.
He just couldn’t figure out how all this could have happened, but he was sure that he hadn’t killed anyone.
The simple interrogation room consisted of one table and three chairs.
Shao Xujie sat on the central chair, his hands and feet shackled, his eyes filled with suppressed and bewildered emotions.
"Shao Xujie, how much longer are you planning to resist? We have all the evidence, people, and items. Do you really think we could be falsely accusing you?"
Shao Xujie lifted his head, shaking it at the harshly shouting Yuan Zhiwei in front of him, "I didn’t kill anyone."
"Still trying to argue even at the brink of death!"
Yuan Zhiwei shifted the laptop screen on the table towards Shao Xujie.
The screen displayed the footage of him returning to the crime investigation department in the early morning and entering the weapon storage room.
Within a few minutes, he walked out holding a weapon in his hand.
The surveillance footage showed him driving away and going to where the victim was.
Even though some areas were out of camera view, they still captured him shooting the victim with his own hands.
With so much evidence in front of him, it was impossible to refute.
Shao Xujie clenched his jaw, staring at the computer screen with reddened eyes, including the image of him firing the gun and the victim, Bai Xiaofei, falling down in what position. It was all clear in his sight.
He bit his lip, refusing to believe the footage showing on the surveillance camera.
He didn’t kill anyone; he didn’t remember doing anything.
Shao Xujie lifted his head, his determined face losing its calm, panic in his eyes, "I didn’t kill anyone!"
Unable to come up with a defense other than his denial.
Being a public servant himself, he knew how powerless his words were against such evidence.
But he still had to fight.
Once he admitted, his life would be over.
He didn’t even know who the victim was, how could he kill someone without any reason?
Yuan Zhiwei leaned back in his chair, looking at Shao Xujie with a pitiful gaze. "I don’t know what you’re holding on to. You should know the case procedure like the back of your hand. At this point, do you still think it’s possible to turn the case?"
Despair and unwillingness were written all over Shao Xujie as he clenched his teeth, repeating word by word, "I didn’t kill anyone!"
"Bang!"
Yuan Zhiwei, irritated, threw the pen in his hand onto the table, bursting out angrily, "You didn’t kill anyone? Are the witnesses lying? The murder weapon is your service pistol, didn’t you take it yourself? All the people, items, and even surveillance footage captured you killing the victim. How do you explain all this?"
Shao Xujie’s shackled hands shook violently on the armrests of the chair.
Fear, confusion, and a tremendous sense of despair enveloped him.
He knew that overturning the verdict was as hard as ascending to the sky.
But how could he admit to the capital crime of killing a stranger?
The Shao family wouldn’t survive such a scandal. So he could only stare at the handcuffs on his wrist, continuously repeating his denial, stating that he did not kill.
Someone knocked on the door of the interrogation room.
Yuan Zhiwei glared as the young man sitting next to him got up to open the door.
"Director Lu!"
Upon hearing the gasp, Yuan Zhiwei and Shao Xujie both turned to look at the doorway.
Looking at the young man who opened the door, Lu Han smiled, "I’ve retired now, no need to address me that way anymore."
The uniformed young man standing inside scratched his head, "Uh... Young Master Lu!"
Lu Han smiled warmly, the demeanor of an aristocratic son clear to see.
His gaze travelled past the young man to meet with Yuan Zhiwei who was looking over.
"Director Yuan."
Yuan Zhiwei was quick to smile, standing up to greet him, "Well, if it isn’t Young Master Lu. What brings you here so late at night?"
Lu Han’s smile remained constant, "I’m here for Shao Xujie."
Yuan Zhiwei’s smile faltered slightly. He tried to pull it back, but it was difficult.
He wrinkled his nose, his tone indifferent, "We arrested Shao Xujie three hours ago, and in less than one hour, you show up. Seems like you’re not concerned about appearances."
The disdain and resentful emotions in his words were clear.
Even before he took office, he had understood the interpersonal relationships in the department.
Shao Xujie was one of the subordinates Lu Han valued most and had been grooming for the past two years.
"Boss, I didn’t do it! I really didn’t kill him!"
Seeing Lu Han, Shao Xujie’s hopeless expression disappeared as if he had seen his life-saving straw. He struggled to stand.
He knew that if he wanted to clear the suspicion, only Lu Han, who was from one of the four biggest families, could help him.
Shao Xujie’s hands and feet were secured; his body swayed violently, the shackles on his wrists and ankles rattling as he continued to refute the accusation of murder.
