Chapter 540: Just one glance is enough to make a person fall easily

Chapter 540: Chapter 540: Just one glance is enough to make a person fall easily

With the downfall of the Nangong Family, the six aristocratic families have now become five.

Consequently, it has become necessary to find a replacement for the empty slot.

Despite dominating the south for many years, the Fu Family has remained on the outside.

Inviting them to the Capital City symbolizes that the Fu Family is about to scale new heights.

They would certainly not refuse the invitation, but rather, they would welcome it with open arms.

Grandfather Huo pondered for a moment, "Do the Gu Family within the aristocracy have some ties with the southern Fu Family?"

Huo Yunjiao nodded, "Yes, individuals from your generation have established the connection, though these days, contact between the two families is sparse. Involving the Fu Family with the capital also gives us the opportunity to probe their strengths."

Grandfather Huo carefully set his tea cup on the table and slowly rose from his seat.

He walked over to Huo Yunjiao and asked in a deep voice, "Given how much power the Fu Family has amassed in the south over the years, are you certain they will keep to their place once they arrive in the capital?"

Huo Yunjiao calmly replied without a hint of emotion, "If the Fu Family is capable, then let them climb as high as they can. As long as they do not resort to unscrupulous methods like the Nangong family, the Huo Family will not suppress them.

If they resort to any means to gain power, then they should not blame the Huo Family for intervening. We are inviting the Fu Family because, with their current status and position, they can match the other five great families in terms of power."

Grandfather Huo’s face displayed a sense of relief as he nodded repeatedly.

"I understand your point. For hundreds of years, every change in the four great clans and six high families resulted from their ugly competitive means which invited public outrage.

I have grown old, and I no longer wish to see these century-old families fall. Jiaojiao, as the one holding power in the Huo Family, you must surely have some strategies.

While the Fu Family does have ambitions, I hope you can maneuver this situation well. The downfall of a great family can bring harm to countless people. It is always the common people who suffer most."

Huo Yunjiao stood up, his demeanor respectful, "I understand, grandfather."

Grandfather let out a sigh and said, "I have started to feel more and more powerless lately. I’m planning to go to see your second uncle and return when it’s time for Ruanruan to give birth."

A slight smile touched the corner of Huo Yunjiao’s lips. "That’s a good idea. I’ll arrange for someone to escort you to see the second uncle."

If the grandfather stayed away from the capital city, he would not be troubled by such distressing affairs.

With a weary look on his face, Grandfather Huo moved towards his desk, "You should leave now. I see you are not in the best of health. Rest first. Sorting out many things needs time. Your health comes first."

"Yes."

Showing signs of exhaustion, Grandfather Huo waved at his grandson.

Huo Yunjiao gave a slight nod and turned to leave.

Not too far off, upon seeing this, Huo Yirong promptly caught up.

"Yirong!"

After barely taking a few steps, Huo Yirong heard his grandfather’s authoritative voice ringing behind him.

His face wearing a mournful expression, Huo Yirong slowly turned around.

As he turned, his face underwent a swift transformation.

With a bright, cheery look on his face, Huo Yirong reverentially addressed his grandfather, who was now standing behind the desk, "Grandfather."

With a stern look on his face, the grandfather questioned, "Do you have any explanation for your actions during the trip to the Witch Clan?"

Huo Yirong kept his composure and in a deep voice replied, "Grandfather, you know the whole reason behind things. I couldn’t just stand by and watch Huo Zhi get hurt by them."

Grandfather Huo lowered his gaze to rest upon his hands.

"You’ve broken your vow in the end."

Huo Yirong hastily held out his hand, pledging, "There absolutely won’t be a next time, grandfather. I assure you, I just fell for the Witch Clan’s scheme and wasn’t thinking clearly."

Grandfather merely shook his head, "There’s no room for discussion here. Once the matter of the Nangong Family is resolved, you are to spend a day in the Punishment Hall."

Huo Yirong’s lips tightened.

He knew there was no changing grandfather’s mind once it was set.

All he could do was nod in assent, "I understand, grandfather."

"This is just a warning. Remember not to act recklessly in the future."

"Yes——"

"You can leave now."

Huo Yirong nodded and turned to leave.

Upon seeing his younger brother, who had been waiting outside the study, he wore a sorrowful expression.

He lamented, "Third brother, you are so ruthless, you didn’t even plead for me."

Huo Yunjiao gave him a glance, "Grandfather is already upset. If I pleaded for you now, it would only result in a heavier punishment."

After giving it a thought, Huo Yirong didn’t object, "That’s true. The downfall of the Nangong family must have deeply upset grandfather."

The two brothers descended the stairs; the elder one in the front, the younger one behind.

As they reached the entrance, Huo Yunjiao said to his brother, "Second brother, I’m going to check on Ruanruan, then I’m planning on taking her to the Nangong Family. Once we receive the Nangong family’s assets, hand them over to the Xiao Family."

"I know you’re eager to go see your sister. Go then."

Huo Yirong looked fairly disgusted.

Currently, he was the only solitary individual in the Huo family.

The eldest brother had his wife, and the third brother also had his madam, leaving him as the only bachelor.

...

Qin Ruan was still fast asleep. The sound of running water woke her up.

Turning over, she accidentally pressed against her belly, causing her to deliberately turn to the side.

With her eyes still closed, she reflexively reached out in the direction of her bedside table.

She had placed her phone on the table before she went to sleep and now, without any trouble, she had it in her hand.

With sleep still in her eyes, she forced them open and glanced at the time on her phone.

It was already ten in the morning.

Her eyes widened slightly.

She had overslept.

Qin Ruan’s exquisite brows knitted together slightly.

The sound of water which had awakened her just now, had disappeared.

The sound of footsteps moving around the room rang out.

Qin Ruan lifted her head slightly and looked in the direction of the sound.

There stood Huo Yunjiao, clad in a bathrobe that revealed a substantial amount of his pale skin, his visage clearly reflected in her eyes.

His body still radiated damp heat, water droplets fell from his hair onto his bathrobe, other water droplets hung from the ends of his hair, ready to fall.

His aura exuded a wicked charm and a languorous feeling. He stood gracefully at the entrance of the bathroom, his demeanour heralding his nobility and innate grandeur.

The immensely sexy and alluring man, whose charm permeated every bone of his body, could easily ensnare anyone with just one glance.

With one hand resting on the belt of his bathrobe and another wiping his hair, Huo Yunjiao cut an impressive figure.

His deep eyes settled on Qin Ruan, who was already awake on the bed, a flicker of surprise quickly passing in his gaze.

Qin Ruan clearly saw the hint of emotion in his seemingly turbulent but chilly and indifferent eyes.

Under his high nose, his thin lips part slightly, "Did I wake you?"

His voice husky, sexy yet profound.

Qin Ruan, consumed by the sight of the man fresh out of his bath, forgot to reply.

With such male beauty before her, she was too absorbed in admiring to pay attention to what Huo Yunjiao was saying.

He saw her clear state of distraction.

He nonchalantly raises his chin, lips slightly curved, his entire being exuding pleasant vibes.

Huo Yunjiao, composed and steady, walked step by step to the side of the bed.

He leaned in, close to Qin Ruan’s awestruck eyes.

"Lass, what are you looking at, hm?"

The man loved to question with his nasal voice, it was both ambiguous and sexy.

Qin Ruan blinked, slowly stretching her hand to touch his face.

It was warm, the texture felt good, it was smooth.

Even better than a woman’s skin.

"You’re back," Qin Ruan suddenly realized.

She thought she was dreaming.

Despite sharing a bed for so long, this was the first time she had seen the Lord so enticingly alluring.

Huo Yunjiao couldn’t help but laugh.

He ruffled Qin Ruan’s hair, even though his gestures seemed brusque, they were gentle.

"Still half-asleep?"

Qin Ruan, with her charming eyes on the man in front, was still somewhat dazed.

As his eyes lingered on her, the long eyelashes were prominent.

His eyes were deep-set, with a hint of laziness in the bright eyes firmly locked on her.

The complex light in his eyes was inscrutable and Qin Ruan couldn’t help feeling a sense of danger.

She swallowed hard, instinctively avoiding his hand on her head.

Qin Ruan pushed herself up from the bed with both hands.

She said casually, "I’m a little groggy. How come you’re back so soon? Didn’t you say it’d take a couple more days?"

Huo Yunjiao sat on the edge of the bed, drying his hair and casually threw the towel aside.

Turning around, he wrapped his arm around Qin Ruan leaning against the bed.

He leaned close to her ear and softly asked, "Don’t you want to see me so soon?"

Qin Ruan didn’t resist his embrace, even her body, instinctively responded to his touch before her mind caught on.

"When I saw you I thought I was dreaming."

Qin Ruan, wasn’t even aware what she was implying in a man’s world with that statement.

She had pleased Huo Yunjiao with her compliance.

The man’s sexy laugh echoed in Qin Ruan’s ear.

His slender fingers with distinct joints touched Qin Ruan’s lips, tenderly stroking her rosy lips.

"Lass, what you just said sounds as if you’ve missed me for a long time."

Before Qin Ruan could speak, he had her lips sealed with his words.

Because Huo Yunjiao had just spoken the truth.

She did miss him.

She slowly released the hand clutching him.

Recognizing her intention, Huo Yunjiao leaned in.

Qin Ruan, going with the flow, leaned back against the bed head.

She could feel his hands, graciously cushioned at her waist, such a thoughtful gesture moved her heart.

Looking up, she met his deep gaze, a hint of desire lightening up his eyes.

The light in Huo Yunjiao’s eyes was similar to that of a wild beast, alarming Qin Ruan.

She reflexively held her stomach with both hands.

Huo Yunjiao glanced down, taking her anxious action into account.

Just in an instant, his physical and mental restlessness faded.

For some reason, when he thought about someone coveting Qin Ruan while he was not in the Capital City, he couldn’t help feeling a seething, unvented anger in his heart.

"Lord, I’m hungry."

Perhaps sensing his mood change, Qin Ruan softly voiced out.

Huo Yunjiao lifted his eyes, his gaze deep and intensely settling on Qin Ruan.

Unexpectedly, the corners of his mouth curved into a pleased smile. He asked teasingly, "Lass, I heard someone bullied you while I was away?"

"Not that I know of."

Qin Ruan didn’t feel bullied.

If anyone tried to bully her, they would have to see if she allowed them to.

Huo Yunjiao let out a breath gently, "Nangong Chang."

Qin Ruan understood instantly, she shook her head, "No, he just tried to hurt my second brother. And I broke his arm."

To her, that didn’t count as being bullied.

Huo Yunjiao didn’t know how to respond to Qin Ruan, a girl who is genuinely innocent and sensible.

He was planning to comfort her, but seeing her attitude, there was no need for that.

Huo Yunjiao bent down to plant a gentle kiss on Qin Ruan’s forehead.

His warm voice rang out, "It was my mistake for not being by your side, leaving you to be bullied. This will not happen next time."

His promise left Qin Ruan confused.

Regardless of how one looked at the Nangong Chang matter, he was the one who ended up worse for the wear.

She wasn’t injured and the Nangong family didn’t give her a hard time either.

From the way the Lord spoke, it seemed as if she had been terribly wronged.
