Chapter 423: Mister Huo: Ruanruan is too likable
Chapter 423: Chapter 423: Mister Huo: Ruanruan is too likable
Qin Ruan turned her gaze away from the code box, asking Huo Chuan anxiously, "Is the Third Master alright?"
Huo Chuan responded respectfully, "Master is in a bad mood."
Qin Ruan fell silent. If the Third Master was in a bad mood, she had no way to return.
She asked again, "Is the Second Master also at home?"
Huo Chuan: "Yes, the Second Master will also participate in this mission."
A twinge of concern rose in Qin Ruan’s heart, a dubious light reflected in her eyes, "What exactly happened?"
Huo Chuan pursed his lips, "Madam, I will explain this matter later. Let Huo Zhi leave first, someone is waiting for her outside."
Qin Ruan waved her hand, "Go ahead."
Huo Chuan walked to Huo Zhi, presenting the code box to her.
Huo Zhi took the box. It was heavier than she anticipated, causing her to stagger a bit before quickly regaining her balance.
"Little Zhizi, come back safely."
Huo Zhi, who had just steadied herself, looked up at Huo Chuan in surprise. She bit her lip, "I will."
Huo Chuan clenched his jaw, his tone cold, "Go ahead, your brothers will welcome you back."
"Alright!" Huo Zhi nodded with determination, her eyes slightly red.
She turned to Qin Ruan and bowed, "Madam, I’m leaving."
Qin Ruan slightly squinted her eyes, keenly observing Huo Zhi and Huo Chuan.
She had a gut feeling that the sombre atmosphere suggested Huo Zhi was heading into a life-or-death situation.
Overlooking her instinctive unease, Qin Ruan said gently to Huo Zhi, "Huo Zhi, come back safely."
Huo Zhi bowed her head in compliance and left quickly with the box.
Qin Anguo watched Huo Zhi’s retreating figure, his sharp eyes narrowing into slits. A cunning light danced across his face.
Until Huo Zhi’s figure had disappeared, he turned to Qin Ruan slowly and said, "Ruanruan, I’m afraid the girl who just left won’t be coming back."
The color drained from Qin Ruan’s face, "Father, what do you mean by that?"
Qin Anguo sipped his tea. His eyes were gentle as he smiled at Qin Ruan, slowly saying, "In times of crisis, extreme measures must be taken by exceptional individuals.
It’s rumored that the death-defying warriors of ancient families are loyal unto death, fearless, never fearing sacrifices. They never care about rewards or commendations. In their perspective, being welcomed home signifies a courageous sacrifice, which is their ultimate honor."
All this, I’ve heard from others. Whether it’s true or not remains to be seen, but I can’t help feeling that the girl might never come back."
Qin Ruan’s eyes narrowed, her piercing gaze fixed on Huo Chuan, "How dangerous is Huo Zhi’s mission this time?"
Huo Chuan looked down, his tone flat, "It’s a certain death."
Qin Ruan took a deep breath, attempting to stay calm, "Why did you have to send her?"
Huo Chuan’s tone was as indifferent as before, "The Master’s orders are mandatory for the members of the Hidden Department."
The implication was clear: there was no reason, if the master ordered them to act, even if they knew they were going to die, they must go without hesitation.
Qin Ruan ground her teeth, her face turning awful. The reproach in her eyes was alarming.
She liked the girl, Huo Zhi. She was a few years older than Qin Ruan, had a steady disposition, spoke little and acted in a way that put others at ease.
Qin Ruan stood, striding towards the door.
"Madam!" Huo Chuan immediately moved to block her, "Madam, the Third Master gave me a message for you."
"We can talk about it later!"
Qin Ruan didn’t stop. She couldn’t just stand by and watch Huo Zhi go to her death.
’Certain death’. What did that mean? It meant Huo Zhi would certainly die.
Just as Qin Ruan was about to rush out the door, Huo Chuan stepped forward, boldly stretching out his arms to stop her, "Madam, the Third Master said that if you wanted to stop it, to let you know that it is Huo Zhi’s destiny and not to feel too bad for her."
What was the underlying meaning? Did the Third Master mean Huo Zhi deserved to die?
Qin Ruan’s eyebrows furrowed, "What do you mean?" she asked Huo Chuan directly.
Huo Chuan bit his lip, his voice carrying a hint of emotion, "Huo Zhi is a spy planted by another family in the Huo family."
"Are you sure?!"
Qin Ruan looked surprised. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts, and her normally clear mind was suddenly in a state of disarray.
If Huo Zhi was a spy planted by another family, why would the Third Master arrange her by her side?
In her previous life at the Wanbao Mountain tomb, Huo Zhi had worshipped the ancestors with the Third Master.
She was familiar with both Huo Zhi and Huo Chuan, and even the loyal Huo Qiang, who was always by Huo Yirong’s side, she had met on a few occasions.
If Huo Zhi was a traitor, why was she still by the Third Master’s side in her previous life and why did she never change?
Something was wrong!
Qin Ruan’s eyes suddenly widened.
In her previous life, just before the Third Master died, Huo Zhi had suddenly disappeared.
In the six months before the Third Master’s death, Huo Chuan was the only one left by his side. Huo Zhi had suddenly disappeared.
Could she really be a traitor to the Huo family?
Qin Ruan found it hard to believe that, given the Third Master’s care for her and their child, he would keep such a potential danger by her side.
She furrowed her brows in puzzle, her face revealing her obvious frustration. She was feeling unorganised and the more she thought about it, the more annoyed she got.
Qin Anguo walked over to Qin Ruan’s side and patted her shoulder, "Don’t let your imagination run wild. If there’s something you don’t understand, why not ask the Third Master directly?"
Suddenly her thoughts cleared up. Qin Ruan quickly turned back to the table, grabbed her phone, scrolled through the call logs, found the Third Master’s communication record, and dialed it directly.
The phone was picked up instantly.
"Ruanruan?" Huo Yunjiao’s cold, deep voice resounded from the speaker.
Hearing his familiar tone, Qin Ruan could sense that the Third Master was not in a good mood.
She got straight to the point, "Third Master, can Huo Zhi come back alive this time?"
It seemed Huo Yunjiao hadn’t expected Qin Ruan to ask whether Huo Zhi could come back alive, he hadn’t anticipated it.
He chuckled lightly, his laugh clearly reaching Qin Ruan’s ears through the phone, "Ruanruan, aren’t you going to ask me if Huo Zhi is a traitor?"
Qin Ruan promptly said, "I don’t think she is."
Rather than saying she believed Huo Zhi wasn’t a traitor, it was more accurate to say she trusted Huo Yunjiao.
She trusted that this man would not put her and their child in danger.
On the other side of the phone, Huo Yunjiao, stood on the balcony of the study, his hand loosely resting on the railing. At Qin Ruan’s sure answer, he seemed slightly taken aback.
A moment later, understanding dawned, and he laughed again, his laughter low and pleasing.
Qin Ruan’s phone was close to her ear, and Huo Yunjiao’s laughter passed clearly into her ears, hitting her somewhat uneasy heart.
It was as if he was standing next to her, leaning down to whisper in her ear. This was a kind of consolation that no one else could provide.
"Indeed, she isn’t."
Huo Yunjiao spoke softly, his voice as rich as wine.
He gave Qin Ruan a firm answer, a reward for her trust.
The young girl seemed naive, but when it comes to major matters, she always trusted him unconditionally.
Could Huo Zhi, a Hidden Guard, acquire Qin Ruan’s trust over a short period?
The answer was no.
Then why would she believe that Huo Zhi was not a traitor? It all came down to him.
The Third Master was pleased by Qin Ruan’s answer and the trust she had in him, dissolving much of the anger he felt about the bad news.
Little Miss was just so endearing.
