Chapter 409: Ruanruan’s Benefactor from Three Years Ago, Meets Again in This Life
Chapter 409: Chapter 409: Ruanruan’s Benefactor from Three Years Ago, Meets Again in This Life
The solemn and dignified doors of the Huo family mansion slowly creaked open, the vehicle carrying Qin Ruan entered the antique and imposing Huo family courtyard.
As the car entered the Huo family, Qin Ruan, who was dozing in the back seat, gradually opened her eyes.
Her gaze moved through the car window, scanning the Huo family courtyard bathed in dim yellow streetlight.
"You slept the whole way, are you that tired?"
A puzzled voice arose at Qin Ruan’s side, with a hint of grievance and a touch of complaint.
Li Manning, who had been a Puppet these days, hadn’t talked to anyone except her enemies. It was quite a rare chance to come across someone like Qin Ruan.
She had a lot of things to say, especially regarding the search for her son, which she valued immensely.
Qin Ruan had been sleeping all the way, which tore Li Manning apart.
Li Manning, already a formidable Puppet, became even more impetuous due to the surge of Puppet Power at night.
When she heard Li Manning’s dissatisfied voice, Qin Ruan looked at her side. Her eyes were still sleepy, not fully awake yet.
Looking at Li Manning’s pale face, she spoke lazily, "I’m pregnant, I tend to get sleepy during this time."
A surprised expression appeared on Li Manning’s face: "You’re pregnant?!"
Qin Ruan lightly touched her abdomen and nodded, "Almost three months."
Huo Chuan and Huo Zhi, who were sitting in the front, listened to Madam murmuring to herself. The two exchanged glances, quite used to this by now.
"You’re actually pregnant!" Li Manning was genuinely shocked, and her gaze slowly moved down, fixating on Qin Ruan’s stomach.
This gaze, undeniably, changed her complexion.
She pointed at Qin Ruan’s lower abdomen , stuttering, "Why does he... he have the same energy as you?"
Qin Ruan looked puzzled, "What energy?"
"Your stomach, there’s a ball of golden light in your stomach!"
Li Manning hadn’t previously noticed Qin Ruan’s stomach until she looked closely and found that the energy emanating from Qin Ruan was especially strong at the location of her abdomen.
Qin Ruan smiled, not too surprised.
The child was just like her, absorbing the Evil Qi and being nurtured by Nether Divine Power, which sealed its fate of being different from ordinary children.
Huo Chuan, who was driving the car, abruptly hit the brakes. The sound of abrupt braking echoed in their ears.
Suddenly, Qin Ruan’s body shook.
She held onto the car door to steady herself, furrowed her brows and asked, "What’s happened?"
Huo Zhi, who had retracted her gaze from the front due to the unexpected situation, turned her head and looked at Qin Ruan with concern, "Madam, are you okay?"
Qin Ruan shook her head, "I’m alright. What happened up front?"
Huo Zhi respectfully replied, "Huo Qiang was dealing with some business up ahead. The road lights are a little dim, we didn’t see him just now."
Out of curiosity, Qin Ruan leaned forward and saw Huo Qiang and his group in the middle of the road, including a man Huo Qiang was dragging along. The man was in a sorry state, his head drooping, unconscious.
From this situation, it was clear that they were about to do something that would not bear scrutiny.
Qin Ruan, who had been living in West City for years, had a keen intuition for such situations.
Seeing that it was Madam’s car they had encountered, Huo Qiang immediately got his men off the road to make way.
Huo Chuan who was in the car, gave a nod to Huo Qiang, and continued driving forward.
The car moved past Huo Qiang and his group.
The position where they stood was exactly the direction Qin Ruan was sitting.
As the car passed by the group, Qin Ruan’s gaze inadvertently swept over the man mercilessly dumped on the ground.
Just by chance, Lin Hao raised his dull head gradually.
His dead and lacklustre eyes glanced towards the moving vehicle.
The car windows were covered with protective film, so he couldn’t see the people inside the car.
Sitting in the back seat, Qin Ruan clearly saw his resolute face, which surged into her memory through life and death, a familiar face she remembered.
Even after many years, she still remembered Lin Hao’s face.
Compared to a few years ago, he now lacked his previous enthusiasm and his unrestrained and rogue demeanor from West City.
If not for his unchanged face, Qin Ruan would have almost not recognised him.
Three years ago, in the underground boxing ring of West City, Lin Hao had helped her.
As the car moved slowly, Qin Ruan watched the diehard face of the man gradually disappear from sight.
Huo Qiang watched Madam’s car drive away and continued to drag Lin Hao.
His subordinate next to him suddenly asked out of curiosity, "Uncle Qiang, Madam is always returning late at night. What the hell is she busy with?"
Huo Qiang said sternly, "Mind your own business."
The subordinate grinned, "I am just curious. Chuan and Little Zhizi are always by Madam’s side but we still have no idea what they’re up to. All the brothers are quite curious."
Huo Qiang said coldly, "Excessive curiosity comes with a price."
This subordinate had been with Huo Qiang for many years and could be said to have been brought up by him.
He wasn’t afraid of Huo Qiang at all. In fact, he even leaned closer to him and whispered mysteriously, "I heard that Madam has special abilities. She can see things we can’t see."
Effortlessly dragging Lin Hao, Huo Qiang narrowed his eyes, glanced at his subordinate and asked calmly, "Where did you hear that?"
The subordinate grinned, "Xiaowu, who was with Madam last time, told me."
Huo Qiang warned, "Tell him to keep his mouth shut. If this gets to the second and third masters, you guys won’t be spared."
The subordinates looked indifferent: "We were just discussing amongst ourselves, we didn’t tell anyone else."
"Stop!"
Suddenly, a familiar voice came from behind.
It was the very lady they were discussing about.
Huo Qiang’s expression remained unchanged, but the subordinate beside him turned pale.
He was scared that she had overheard their discussion about her, and now she was coming to settle accounts.
Huo Qiang, holding Lin Hao in his grasp – the man made no struggle, as unresponsive as a dead dog – turned around to face Qin Ruan.
Under the dim streetlight, Qin Ruan walked towards Huo Qiang and his men with steady, swift, yet unhurried steps.
Discarding the man in his hands, Huo Qiang bowed his head respectfully and called out, "Madam."
"Madam—"
The subordinates behind him also bowed their heads and respectfully echoed his greeting.
Qin Ruan walked to Huo Qiang’s side and pointed at Lin Hao, who was lying motionless on the ground. "Where are you taking this man?"
Huo Qiang followed her gaze, looking coldly at Lin Hao before answering in a low voice, "This man tried to attack Master Third earlier today. We caught him red-handed."
Hearing that Lin Hao had attempted to harm Master Third, Qin Ruan’s delicate face showed a subtle change, a hint of sinister shade reflecting in her eyes.
Thinking of Lin Hao’s kindness towards her, she sighed and said to Huo Qiang, "Hand him over to me."
Just as Huo Qiang was about to say something, Lin Hao on the ground suddenly sat up.
He looked at Qin Ruan with disbelief: "Qin Xiaowu?!"
At the mention of the name Qin Xiaowu, a glint of understanding flashed across Huo Qiang’s eyes.
Back when Master Second had him investigate Qin Ruan, her file mentioned her name in West City – the ruthless, deadly beauty, Qin Xiaowu.
Seeing Lin Hao recognizing her, Qin Ruan’s lips slowly curved into a faint smile.
She chuckled and said, "So, you still remember me."
Lin Hao snorted a laugh with an ambiguous tone: "It’s only been three years, how could I forget."
"Yes, we haven’t seen each other for three years."
Qin Ruan approached Lin Hao, and Huo Qiang along with his men immediately moved aside.
This was really tricky for them; the person assigned to them by Master Second and Third turned out to be an old acquaintance of Madam.
Huo Qiang watched as the previously suicidal Lin Hao now glow with life upon seeing the madam, as if he had become a completely different person.
Qin Ruan stood in front of Lin Hao, her beautiful eyes observing him from above. Her voice low, she asked, "Why did you attack Master Third Huo?"
The corners of Lin Hao’s lips curled into a sneer. Under the dim street light, his resolute face showed hints of suppressed bitterness.
"I had orders from my master. I dare not disobey."
Qin Ruan frowned. "Three years ago, after our fight in the underground boxing ring, you disappeared. Did you find a master then?"
Lin Hao brushed through his sticky, blood-clotted hair. He grunted in affirmation.
With this grunt, mixed too many complexities, it made it difficult for Qin Ruan to distinguish his emotions.
Three years ago, she crossed paths with the notorious Liuye, a ringleader in West City. Liuye was a stubborn man.
Of course, Qin Ruan was equally unyielding, a trait which caused her quite a bit of trouble.
She was young, her methods crude; her only choice was defiance in the face of death.
Though Liuye was West City’s ringleader, for the sake of garnering respect and trust from the locals, he was known for keeping his word.
Seeing that neither intimidation nor bribery could change Qin Ruan’s mind, Liuye made a promise.
As long as Qin Ruan could win three consecutive fights in his underground boxing ring, he would let her go. He would not only stop pressuring her but also ensure her safety, forbidding anyone from laying a finger on her.
Much like most men, Liuye suffered what commonly referred to as possessiveness— he didn’t want anyone else to have what he couldn’t.
Qin Ruan, reluctant to give in to Liuye, participated in the matches to escape his oppression and on his promise of protection. Though she was frail and petite, in the underground boxing ring, she won her first two matches.
The victories were hard-fought, and the physical difference between men and women was significant.
Her opponents were the regulars in the underground boxing scene. Qin Ruan only bested them due to her brief bursts of explosive strength.
Exhausted and gravely injured, she was on the brink of disfigurement during the second fight.
The underground boxing ring had no rules; dirty tricks were the norm and none intervened. People were only interested in the outcome, the process was secondary.
In Qin Ruan’s second match, her opponent pulled out a weapon in the nick of time and lunged at her face.
If it weren’t for Liuye discharging his gun, hitting the assailant’s wrist, Qin Ruan’s face would likely have suffered irreparable scars.
Back then, Qin Ruan was so utterly exhausted that she couldn’t react in time to dodge the attack.
Liuye showed signs of leniency, but there was still one last match.
In the final match, she encountered Lin Hao.
Lin Hao’s name was widely recognised in West City as a star in Liuye’s underground boxing ring. Famous for his savage methods and cruelty, the number of boxers who had been defeated by him was countless.
A sure victor, Lin Hao made a lot of money for Liuye in the underground boxing ring and was one of Liuye’s favorites.
Both were well aware of the other’s existence.
As for encounters, they hardly had any, save for occasional run-ins.
Perhaps Lin Hao was reluctant to see her mistreated by Liuye, thus he intentionally went easy on her, saving the thoroughly exhausted Qin Ruan from a predicament.
