Chapter 244: Chapter 244: Regarding the Future, He Feels Lost and Helpless at Heart
Upon the discovery that Xia Yunchen had fainted at the sight of Mu Qing’s hair, a twitch of amusement snaked across Qin Ruan’s lips.
Just how terrified of snakes was the man?
It was maddening, too disturbing to envisage.
Who knew what trauma Xia Yunchen had endured in the past, what snake-related injury had instilled such an irrational fear within him?
Caught in Changyuan’s probing gaze, Qin Ruan swiftly averted her eyes.
She coughed lightly: "That’s your problem now. Find a way to overcome your master’s fear of snakes. You can’t keep erasing his memory, hiding away each day, unable to show himself."
Expecting Qin Ruan to come up with a solution, Changyuan was instead met with disappointment.
A frown marred his face as he toyed with the long hair draped over his shoulder, his cheeks puffed out in annoyance.
He curtly sent them away: "Now that everything is settled, you should leave. Don’t disturb my master’s rest."
"Even after we helped you deal with the vicious puppet, you’re treating us like this?"
The quick dismissal was starting to unnerve Qin Ruan.
Changyuan scoffed derisively: "That thing couldn’t have harmed my master!"
Qin Ruan raised an eyebrow: "If you were cornered by another demon, do you think Mu Qing would harm your master?"
"All the demons within a hundred miles fear me. They wouldn’t dare to provoke me."
"What about the female puppet who was previously bound with Xia Yunchen by the Peach Blossom Curse? If she tripped you up, do you think Mu Qing would attempt anything against your master?"
"..." Caught off guard, Changyuan was left speechless, his eyes round with surprise.
He had never contemplated this possibility.
With a scornful expression, Qin Ruan suggested ruefully: "You should be more careful in the future. Maybe eat more walnuts for a brain boost?"
She strode past him, heading towards Xia Yunchen.
"Walnuts?" Changyuan looked puzzled.
Without turning back, Qin Ruan clarified: "They’re good for the brain!"
"You’re insulting me!" Changyuan accused.
"I’m merely stating facts!" she retorted.
Qin Ruan scooped up her backpack from the marble table and nodded towards Lun Wenbin and Qiao Nanyuan.
"Uncle Lun, Uncle Qiao, let’s go."
"Alright——"
The pair chorused, gathering their things.
The corners of Qin Ruan’s eyes swept across Xia Yunchen, still unconscious on the sofa.
Upon discovering something, a mysterious curve graced her lips and her eyes glittered with amusement.
Having gathered their belongings, Qin Ruan led the way towards the exit, with Lun Wenbin and Qiao Nanyuan following.
As she passed Changyuan, Qin Ruan offered a poignant farewell: "Take care."
"You don’t have to worry about me."
Changyuan’s face was rigid with anger.
In his eyes now, Qin Ruan was a clever and deceptive creature.
Moreover, every encounter with her spelled trouble.
Her parting words felt more like a threat than a genuine sentiment.
Truth be told, he wasn’t overthinking it.
With Qin Ruan and the others barely out the door, Changyuan glanced around at the disarray. Another cleanup was looming on his horizon.
He turned towards Xia Yunchen.
Within a second, he knew something was amiss.
His master’s hand, draped lifelessly over the sofa, was tightly clenched into a fist, his body strung with tension, his closed eyes fluttering slightly.
Xia Yunchen must have awakened at some point.
This meant he must have heard all their previous conversation.
Changyuan couldn’t believe his misfortune!
"Master..."
Changyuan’s voice was dry, filled with unease and panic.
And a trace of annoyance was directed at Qin Ruan for withholding valuable information.
He knew it! Qin Ruan was a deceitful woman!
"Stay away!"
Xia Yunchen, refusing to open his eyes, struggled to control his trembling body, stuttering out the words.
"Master, I won’t harm you."
Changyuan stood still in his tracks, not daring to move a muscle.
"Don’t come any closer!" Xia Yunchen’s voice rang out sharply, he was truly scared now.
He had no idea all this time there was a snake lurking beside him!
This man must be a demon!
Just thinking about his previous ignorance made Xia Yunchen feel uneasy all over, a shiver running down his spine.
After a long time, he finally gathered the courage to open his eyes.
Xia Yunchen saw Changyuan standing several meters away, his pupils shrank sharply, eyes trembling.
His eyes were locked onto Changyuan, his hands and feet unsure of what to do.
Thus, the master and servant stood silently in confrontation.
After a while, Xia Yunchen spoke out, his first sentence after opening his eyes.
He said: "Stop following me, I am not your master, please, leave."
That simple sentence provoked Changyuan.
"No!"
Changyuan’s voice was firm and ruthless.
No matter what, he could not agree to such a request.
"Master, you and I are one, I cannot leave you!"
Changyuan took a step closer to Xia Yunchen, who crawled and rolled to the sofa in response.
His reaction was as quick as ever, not losing any of its earlier reflexiveness.
Xia Yunchen’s voice raised uncontrollably: "No, don’t come!"
Even though Changyuan was now human, the thought of how terrifying his huge serpent form might be prevented him from hiding his fear any longer.
Xia Yunchen was terrified, on the verge of tears.
Changyuan saw his unease, fear, and panic etched all over his face, and a deep sadness swelled in his eyes.
"Master..."
"Stop calling me that, I’m not your master!"
Xia Yunchen clung tightly to the pillow on the sofa, watching Changyuan fearfully and warily.
Terrified that the other might pounce.
Changyuan sighed quietly: "Master, I will not leave you, it’s late, you should go to sleep."
As the words ended, he instantly appeared before Xia Yunchen.
Gazing at his frightened face, Changyuan extended his slender index finger and quickly tapped it between his eyebrows.
Left with no other choice, he could only repeatedly erase his master’s memory.
Xia Yunchen’s eyelids fluttered closed, his tensed body relaxed, slowly sliding into Changyuan’s arms.
"Master..."
Changyuan held him, his face a mix of sadness and helplessness, the depths of his eyes filled with a faint sense of confusion.
Confused and lost about the future.
...
Qin Ruan, Lun Wenbin, and Qiao Nanyuan left the Xia family, only to find Huo Zhi waiting for them at the doorway.
Dressed in black as if she were a special agent, tying her hair into a ponytail, she exuded efficiency.
Noticing the three of them, Huo Zhi straightened up.
She gave Qin Ruan a slight nod: "Miss Qin."
Upon Qin Ruan’s earlier instruction, Huo Zhi did not address her as Madam in public.
Qin Ruan walked up to the passenger side that Huo Zhi had opened for her.
Before getting into the car, she asked Lun Wenbin who was standing by the car, "Uncle Lun, where are you off to later?"
"It’s late, I’ll spend the night at Qiao’s."
Qin Ruan smiled: "I had the same idea."
Hearing this, a flicker of light crossed Huo Zhi’s eyes, but she said nothing.
Being the host, Qiao Nanyuan heartily welcomed them: "I’ll call Xiaojiu later and ask her to get two guest rooms ready; the house might not have much, but we do have spare rooms."
The trio got into the car, and the understated luxurious vehicle slowly drove off into the night.
...
Lying on the bed, Qin Ruan opened her eyes, feeling a wave of exhaustion enveloping her.
Her body felt incredibly tired.
It turns out, she couldn’t rest well in a strange environment.
This sleep did not provide her with physical relaxation, but instead put her in a terrible mood.
All night, she had been dreaming.
The dreams were filled with fragmented and annoying bits of memory from her past life.
