Chapter 1149: Chapter 1149: The Chen Family Has No Puppet Monsters, Only Human Hearts Run Amok
Madam Zhang walked over from the dining room, and Chen Sixing took the water cup from her hand and offered it to Qin Ruan.
Looking at the beautiful girl in front of her, she asked curiously, "I still don’t know your name, and what brings you to such a remote place?"
"My surname is Qin, I’m Qin Ruan, and I’m still a student..."
Qin Ruan repeated the same story she had told Master Chen to Chen Sixing.
"Ahhh... No!!"
"Get away, roll away, ahhh... No!!"
Just as she finished speaking, piercing screams could be heard from upstairs.
The voice was aged and hoarse, tormented by pain and suffering.
Upon hearing her mother’s screams, Chen Sixing abruptly stood up and dashed upstairs.
Qin Ruan watched her receding figure and slowly stood up herself. She didn’t follow Chen Sixing upstairs; instead, she walked at a leisurely pace to a display cabinet against the wall on the left.
In the middle position, a turquoise porcelain vase was placed, around which a faint Evil Qi lingered. It also exuded several weak life forces, one of which belonged to Song Semi-Taoist.
Qin Ruan reached out to touch the porcelain vase.
She lightly flicked her fingertips and the vase fell to the ground with a sound.
"Crack!"
The moment the vase touched the floor, it shattered into several uneven pieces.
Then a miraculous scene occurred.
Song Semi-Taoist and his friends appeared out of thin air on the ground, sprawled in disarray.
Qin Ruan saw several people, her face showing no surprise, as if she had known all along that Song Semi-Taoist and the others were trapped inside the porcelain vase.
She glanced sideways at Madam Zhang standing in the dining room, who looked expressionless and composed, her dark eyes unblinkingly staring at the shards around Qin Ruan’s feet; Qin Ruan’s lips slowly curled up.
This Chen Family was indeed quite interesting.
The Chen Family didn’t have any Puppet Monsters; it was nothing more than human malingering that was to blame.
Madam Zhang took a deep look at Song Semi-Taoist and the others before turning indifferently to walk back into the dining room.
Song Semi-Taoist had been prepared for death and had never expected such a turn of events. Now, having reappeared in the Chen Family’s hall and seeing Qin Ruan standing in front of him, he knew he had been rescued, immediately bursting into tears of gratitude.
"Taoist Qin, you have finally come. Had you been any later, you would have found my corpse!"
Qin Ruan helped him up from the ground, amused and bemused, "What are you talking about? As long as you’re breathing, I wouldn’t stand by idly."
After helping him up, she looked down at the other elders on the ground and then at the porcelain vase broken into several pieces, her fingertips subtly moved.
She drew the life force that had been absorbed from Song Semi-Taoist and the others into her palm and then returned it to each of the elders.
Under Qin Ruan’s manipulation, the complexions of Song Semi-Taoist and the other elders visibly improved.
Lying on the ground, several of them regained consciousness and slowly opened their eyes.
They shifted their gazes between Song Semi-Taoist and Qin Ruan, their faces displaying a mix of suppressed discomfort and undeniable fear.
One of the elders, recalling how he had been tricked and how he was helplessly aware of his life force being stolen while trapped in a dream, deftly climbed to his feet.
He gave a polite and hasty bow to Song Semi-Taoist, "Old Song, I just remembered something urgent at home. I must leave now. This business is not fated for me; we’ll meet again another time!"
After speaking, he fled the Chen Family in a light jog.
Seeing this, the other elders exchanged looks and then, one after another, quickly stood up to say their goodbyes.
"Old Song, my grandson just got out of school, and my daughter-in-law is away on business, so I have to go pick up the child!"
"Old Song, my wife isn’t feeling well, so I’m leaving first!"
"Old Song..."
Before Song the Semi-Immortal could even open his mouth, he could only watch as they fled in a panic.
He, too, wanted to leave this place of trouble. Remembering that it was he who had asked Qin Ruan to come and help, he realized he would have no face to see anyone if he ran away now.
Qin Ruan looked at Song the Semi-Immortal’s twisted and frightened face with a smile in her eyes and said understandingly, "Old Song, it’s getting late. You should go back too. Don’t worry about this place with me here."
Song the Semi-Immortal was about to nod in agreement, but thinking back to the dangerous encounter with the Puppet Monster, he said sheepishly, "There might be some trouble with the Chen Family, and I’ll be less of a danger if I stay to help you."
He couldn’t just leave Qin Ruan here alone, no matter how afraid he was.
If something really happened to her, not only would his life be in danger, but his family would also suffer.
Qin Ruan looked down at the fragments on the ground and said in an indisputable tone, "No need. I have a plan for the Chen Family’s situation. You staying won’t help."
She then looked up towards the second floor, her delicate face revealing an intriguing smile.
Hearing her say this, and knowing when to leave, Song the Semi-Immortal took his leave. Before going, he made Qin Ruan promise to be careful and informed her about the shape and contour of the Puppet Monster he had seen when he was plotted against.
Qin Ruan nodded to show she understood and had Lin Hao personally escort Song the Semi-Immortal out of the Chen Family’s house.
Standing in place silently for a moment, Qin Ruan said to Huo Zhi, "Wait for me downstairs, I’ll go upstairs and take a look."
Huo Zhi replied, "Madam, please be careful."
Qin Ruan hummed in acknowledgment and started walking upstairs.
Stepping onto the second floor’s corridor, Qin Ruan heard noises coming from the master bedroom.
"A’Pei, you had a nightmare again, get up and drink some water."
That was the worried voice of Old Mr. Chen, difficult to hide the pain in his gentle tone.
"Mom, this can’t go on like this. I clearly called for a Master today, but they haven’t shown their faces yet, and I don’t know if they’ve changed their minds.
I heard from a friend that the Taoists from the Jade Star Sect are very powerful. Our Chen family might not have power, but we do have some money. Shall I take you to the Jade Star Sect to ask for help?"
That was the anxious voice of the Chen Family’s daughter, Chen Sixing, frustrated and distressed.
Qin Ruan moved towards the master bedroom, following the sound.
"People just dream more and sleep less as they get old; it will pass after a while."
A weak and powerless voice followed.
It was the same old lady who had screamed earlier, her hoarse voice carrying affection for her children.
Qin Ruan stood at the bedroom door, her deep fox eyes glancing inside.
She saw the old lady sitting on the bed leaning in Old Mr. Chen’s arms and Chen Sixing holding the old lady’s hands at the side of the bed.
Chen Sixing continued to persuade, "Mom! Who has nightmares for a month straight? Look at the state of your health now, after so many hospital visits and still no diagnosis.
Maybe you’ve really offended something, or been cursed. It’d be comforting to have a Mystic Master take a look. You must listen to me on this."
Old Madam Chen patted Chen Sixing’s hand, her tone reproachful, "A top university graduate like you should not be so superstitious; aren’t you afraid of becoming a laughingstock?"
Despite the reprimanding tone, one could detect a degree of satisfaction with her daughter’s filial piety.
Seeing her mother still using the same old excuses to refuse, Chen Sixing knew that the old lady truly didn’t believe in mysticism.
She looked up at Old Mr. Chen: "Dad, you should persuade Mom too. If we keep delaying, Mom’s health will collapse."
Old Mr. Chen sighed softly, his elegant face showing helplessness. With gentle movements, he tucked the silver hair by the old lady’s ear behind it, speaking softly, "A’Pei, just listen to Sixing."
