Chapter 999: Chapter 114 World Tree

"Do you have a festival these past few days?" Seeing the fireworks soaring into the sky from afar, Lina grabbed a nearby elf guard and asked, "Or is there some important event? Otherwise, why would there be fireworks?"

"A festival? No," the elf guard replied, momentarily stunned and puzzled. "As for the fireworks, we set them off whenever we feel like it."

"Elves are very whimsical creatures; they do whatever comes to mind," Pannis said with an apologetic smile to the guard, pulling Lina back by tugging at the deer’s antlers and explaining in a low voice, "They aren’t like humans who need to find the right time and reason before doing something. They simply follow their hearts whenever and wherever, of course, with the premise that it doesn’t adversely affect others, at least not too much."

"Do whatever they feel like?" Lina asked with some difficulty imagining it. "They don’t care at all about the strange looks from others? It feels a bit like the atmosphere of the City of Freedom."

"No, it’s not that they don’t care about others’ opinions at all," Pannis shook his head. "It’s that there really isn’t anyone who gives them such looks; it’s completely different from the City of Freedom. There, the rule is that as long as it’s not against the law, everything is free, and anything can be done, even if it violates ethics, morality, and public order. Elves, however, are just more whimsical; their freedom is engraved deep in their souls. They don’t need to engage in exaggerated and excessive actions to show it. They just act according to their own feelings, expressing their truest thoughts and emotions. Oh, and prepare yourselves mentally because you are about to see something that will completely overturn your understanding of the world."

"Whoosh," another firework shot into the sky, exploding at the canopy’s peak. The orange firework, trailing a long tail, soared to the highest point against the night sky and burst into millions of sparks, scattering like falling stars with residual images in the viewers’ vision. Though the herd of deer slowed slightly, they maintained a brisk pace toward the direction from which the fireworks had ascended, soon reaching the outskirts of the central city area. Before long, the forest of yvelin trees became increasingly sparse, until it was almost impossible to find another. The girls’ view suddenly opened up, revealing the very open space of the Elven Royal Court’s city center.

The focal point of the vista, at the center of the King’s Court, was a gigantic tree—difficult to describe with accurate adjectives because it was so unique. The gigantic tree was extremely tall, roughly estimated to be at least four to five hundred meters high, and also incredibly thick, with an average diameter surpassing one hundred meters; the diameter of the base roots even reached one hundred fifty meters. The huge tree had an excessively large crown; the green crown covered at least a square kilometer or two. Looking up from afar in the night, it was hard to distinguish where the crown ended and where the sky began. Numerous aerial roots hung from the lofty crown down to the ground, embedding themselves in the soil, with dense green leaves growing on them too, forming a mini forest made up of aerial roots. Within this root forest, thousands of tiny glowing specks circled the roots and leaves, intermittently visible, occasionally shedding glowing dust that twinkled in flight. The shining dust turned into a luminous mist, drifting slowly in the air, making this gigantic tree and even the whole area look as beautiful as a dream.

Theoretically, such tall trees should not exist in Yarran World; if a tree grows so tall and robust, it would either be broken by the constant winds at high altitudes, or it would collapse under its own mammoth weight because the base couldn’t support it. Thus, the trees in the Forest of Death, which reach over a hundred meters, were already at the growth limit for plants in Yarran World. The trees at the outskirts of the King’s Court, growing up to a hundred fifty meters, were Divine Gift Trees, a species blessed by a deity. Even then, they could only grow up to one hundred fifty meters and no further. However, looking at the gigantic tree from afar, feeling diminutive like insects, like Pannis said, everyone’s understanding had been completely overturned.

"This tree... how can it exist?" Catherine, sitting on the deer’s back, leaned back forcefully, trying to distance herself to capture the whole tree in her field of vision, but her effort unsurprisingly failed. The knight girl could only stutter and ask, "How tall is it, exactly? How could it ever grow to this size?"

"Five hundred and seventy-four meters," Fula accurately gave the specific height, "the most recent measurement from fifty years ago, and as for now, it probably hasn’t reached five hundred and seventy-five meters. Theoretically, it couldn’t have grown a meter in fifty years."

"Wait, are you saying it’s still growing?" Lina almost shouted, "I only knew that there was a giant tree deep within the Elven Royal Court, but no one ever mentioned that the tree’s height was so... exaggerated, nor did anyone tell me that it was still growing."

"She is still alive, so of course, she will continue to grow," Flare was very clear about the reactions of those who saw the giant tree for the first time, so she was not surprised by the girls’ response, but rather had a mischievous grin on her face as she said, "As for how tall she can grow before reaching her limit, even we don’t know."

"What... what kind of tree is this?" Catherine stared blankly for a while before asking, "Even in the records of the Guild, there is no mention of this type of plant."

"Because there’s only one in the whole Yarran World, so it’s impossible for you to have seen it before," Fula spoke calmly, "It doesn’t have a botanical name, but we habitually call her the World Tree."

"The World Tree?" Catherine murmured, "Do you believe it to be a world unto itself, or do you believe that the world was born from it, which is why you call it that?"

"The world was not born from her, but the world of the elves was indeed born from her," Fula affirmed, "She is not only the origin of the elves but also the origin of all the plants in the Yarran World. Calling her the World Tree, I think, is not an exaggeration."

"What do you mean?" Lina’s expression changed, she looked at the World Tree, then back at Fula’s face, her gaze shifting back and forth several times before she instinctively lowered her voice and asked, "Do you mean that she is..."

"It’s not what we believe, but it is indeed a fact," Fula said, "She was born from the trees, she is the origin of all the plants in the mundane world, she is the creator of the forests, she is the mother of our elf race. Do you understand? You are not mistaken, the World Tree is the Tree of the Beginning, Lord Yuktiraxil emerged from this very Tree of the Beginning."
