Chapter 989: Chapter 105 Tree Wall
Under the direction of the professionals, the Horned Eagle Beasts slowly flapped their wings and descended outside the barrier formed by the giant trees. Although the density of the trees in the Lost Forest was immense, appearing as a green carpet from a distance, upon closer observation there were still numerous spaces between the trees, ample enough for creatures as large as the Horned Eagle Beasts to land on the ground. Hence, the group of magical beasts landed smoothly, completing this unique aerial journey. As the only few Legendary Rank professionals in the team, the young girls now looked especially disheveled.
Aside from Lina, everyone’s hair was in a state of chaos, styled like tree crowns with countless branches extending out. Ava, who had replaced Lina as the member of the adventure team with the longest hair, fared the worst, finding herself nearly wrapped into a glittering golden ball by her long hair. However, if you looked at it from another angle, Ava was perhaps the most fortunate, since being turned into a hairball meant she didn’t have to worry about her appearance being seen by others. The other girls were quite annoyed, as their faces were covered with dust, which, due to the moist environment, clung tightly to their skin, leaving streaks of earthy traces with every wipe of their hands.
However, the girls had no spare energy to attend to their hair and appearances, because their attention had already been entirely captured. They had finally seen the Elven Royal Court, or more precisely, they had finally laid eyes on the gates of the Elven Royal Court.
The Elven Royal Court was not a palace but a large city established deep within the jungle, the capital of the Elven Kingdom and the most populated area within the Lost Forest. This city, concealed within the depths of the forest, was hard to find by outsiders unless led by an Elf. In the early phases of the Third Epoch in the human world, the city even existed only in legends, and its very existence was frequently questioned. However, as the connections between the different races became increasingly tight, such laughable doubts no longer persisted. Although most ordinary people had never seen it, nearly everyone knew that there was a beautiful and unique city hidden within a dangerous forest, a place where the residents were beautiful and elegant, where the scenery was dazzling and peculiar, where the cuisine was rich and exquisite, where art was revered, and where adventurists found their Divine Kingdom.
As children, the girls had also been attracted to the legends of the Elven Royal Court, dreaming that one day they could stroll within it, and witness this legendary city with their own eyes. Today, their childhood wishes had finally come true, and they were standing before the Elven Royal Court.
The city did not have walls, or to be more precise, it lacked walls in the traditional sense. A ring of special giant trees served as the walls of the Elven Royal Court. From the ground, it was apparent that no other trees grew around these giants, and each had a trunk several dozens of meters thick. However, the distance between each trunk was significant, with large gaps that theoretically could not function as a wall. Yet, in reality, these trees supported thick vines, as wide as a wrist, that grew over and intertwined between the trunks, layer upon layer, sealing the spaces between them so tightly that even when peering through a crevice, one would see only another layer of vines rather than the space behind the ring of trees.
On one side of the tree wall, a multitude of vines seemed to be artfully controlled to form an arch-shaped hollow seven or eight meters high. Through this hollow, one could see straight into the interior of the city; this was one of the gates of the Elven Royal Court. Spiraling around this hollow entrance, numerous vibrant flowers bloomed, making this gate without doors appear more like a piece of artwork.
"These vines are actually alive." Touching the fresh flowers on the vines, Lina said in amazement, "They grow with such character, I thought they had wrapped the vines around themselves, but it turns out they grow naturally."
"Indeed, they are alive, but not naturally so." Pannis explained quietly from the side, "Elves are the favored children of the Forest Goddess, bestowed with the ability to control plants to some extent. These vines are the result of them using this ability to direct the growth of plants according to their vision. Don’t underestimate these vines; they are incredibly unique, possessing tremendous resilience and longevity. Even a demigod would struggle to create an opening, and it is simply impossible for those below Legendary Rank. As for the giant trees that make up the walls, they are gifts from the Forest Goddess in response to their prayers. Once planted, they can quickly grow to one hundred and fifty meters tall, and their wood is every bit as hard as stone. Each tree can live for five thousand years or even longer, and they emit a peculiar scent. Although we can’t smell it, magical beasts are very sensitive to it and rarely approach the areas where Divine Gift Trees are. This method of constructing walls, including the ones around the Elven Royal Court, is used by all elven villages and towns. In this way, even in the midst of the Lost Forest, as long as one is within a village or town, their safety is guaranteed."
"It sounds really convenient, just plant a few trees and transplant some vines, and a city is built." Catherine’s admiration hadn’t subsided before it turned into alarm. She smacked the hood on the young mage girl’s head and pulled her back, demanding, "What are you doing? Stop it right now."
In fact, the knight girl had already seen what Vivian was trying to do, which is why she hurried to hold her back. Flames shaped like a blade had flickered from the mage girl’s fingertips, stealthily nearing the vines, preparing to attempt a cut. Catherine stopped Vivian’s uncontrollable research curiosity and gave Flare, who was watching them, an apologetic smile and nodded, "Sorry, that was rude. Just one of her little quirks, haha, I’ll keep an eye on her, no need to worry."
"It’s no problem at all," Flare said gently, smiling, "Many people become extra curious when they come here for the first time, especially mages and scholars, so her reaction was not rude at all. However, please don’t do this inside the city, as many things there are actually creations of our people. Some have taken them decades or even centuries to create, and they would go mad if anything was destroyed."
"Uh, works of art?" Catherine looked at the tree wall and then at the scenery within the city, nodding, "It certainly has strong artistic qualities. Or rather, the entire city is a perfect work of art; its very existence is an artistic miracle."
"Thank you for your praise. I must admit, your appreciation for art is far superior to that of a certain knight. Mmm, I think I like you even more for it." Flare said, smiling happily, "Believe me, everything inside the city will astonish you even more. Follow me." (To be continued.
