Chapter 986: Chapter 102: Flying in the Dream
As the Horned Eagle Beast flapped its wings and soared into the sky, the knight girl, Catherine, suddenly felt an urge to cry. From their childhood days, when gazing up at the sky, most people would fantasize about flying freely through it. To escape the bounds of the ground and glide in the unbridled heavens—where the earth whirled below, the clouds cuddled close, and the brisk wind carried one to every corner of the world. Such dreams would linger deep within people’s hearts. They might seem worn away by the mundane realities on the surface, but in the sleep of night, dreams would reach out from the depths of the soul, allowing one to sail on the breeze in their slumber. Catherine, the knight, a girl in love with speeding, could not resist such dreams, having countless times traversed through clouds in her dreams, her black hair whirled by fierce winds.
Unfortunately, dreams are just dreams, and no one can defy the world’s rules through dreams alone. Hence, Catherine could only look up at the sky with regret and sigh. Though she had ascended to the skies twice with the help of Skyboats, such floating could not truly be considered flying; it was just a change of shackles from the ground to a sky vessel, with no fundamental difference.
Therefore, when the Horned Eagle Beast broke away from the deck and began to circle around the Skyboat, Catherine couldn’t help but let out a resonant war cry—a Legendary Rank roar that echoed far and wide, startling many small creatures on the edges of the forests hundreds of meters away, stimulated by the roar to hide even more carefully beneath the trees to avoid the Horned Eagle Beast. Furthermore, the deafening roar drew many gazes. Passengers already airborne or not all looked at the girl in wonder; but upon understanding the reason, they just revealed knowing smiles. For these Demigods, most of whom once soared on flying mounts in the sky like Elves, they too had been young and had traversed through Catherine’s current phase and understood the emotions swelling in her heart. Indeed, from her demeanor, many were reminded of their youth.
"Be careful, little girl," teased Conaida of the Boulder Family, a Mountain Dwarf, "These birds are quite fond of those who shout and cry out. They like to roar, especially in the mating season of spring. If you keep using your war cry, be careful they don’t mistake it for a mating call. You might be in trouble then."
"Shut up, don’t talk nonsense," Pannis, who had learned how to control Horned Eagle Beasts many years ago, cut off Conaida before he could finish. Pannis suddenly accelerated and positioned himself between the dwarf and the girls, swinging his fist in a threatening manner. "The Horned Eagle Beasts’ mating season is in reverse; they only mate in autumn, and they become grumpy and impossible to ride during that time. You know this very well yet you deliberately confuse the concepts. It’s despicable."
"Hahahaha, someone’s getting angry," Conaida, more cheerful than other Dwarves, was exceptionally outgoing. Amidst the composed Dwarf race, it was hard to find someone as extroverted as him. Like Pannis, Conaida too had friends in every corner of the Yarran World, thanks mostly to his jovial and extroverted nature. Those around him for long periods would inevitably be infected by his laughter, eventually becoming his friend. Now he laughed heartily as he said, "Alright, alright. I’ll stop teasing you. Despite their fierce looks, these Horned Eagle Beasts are actually very obedient. Also, they’re quite fast when flying, which I’m sure will meet your expectations."
"Ahhh~~~" the scream came from Lina, her head covered. As her Horned Eagle Beast just took off, the priest girl lay on the beast’s back, gripping the saddle handles tightly with her hands, eyes shut, and shrieking sharply, not daring to glance down even once.
"Hiss, is she afraid of heights?" Alcmene, although not riding a Horned Eagle Beast for the first time after leaving the swamp, was still uncomfortably flicking her tail. The Elven saddle, not specifically designed with a notch for tails, had been protested by the Lizardman High Priest more than once; however, unfortunately, it seemed that no one paid much attention to her complaints, which made her quite dissatisfied. Right now, though, she wasn’t interested in discussing her displeasure but was rather startled by Lina’s reaction and asked in puzzlement, "That could be problematic. It takes at least ten hours to fly to the Elven Royal Court from here. If she’s really that afraid of heights, she might not be able to endure it. Should we think of some other way to bring her along?"
"Afraid of heights? Her?" Catherine’s expression was oddly perplexing as she glared at Lina and said, "Hey, are you really afraid of heights? Well then, I’ll take off my armor, and you can come over so we can sit on the same Horned Eagle Beast, how about that?"
"Tch." Lina immediately reverted to normal, straightened her back, and retorted with a pout, "How can you do this, big sis? We should be uniting now to confront a powerful foe, not sneakily sabotaging my plan from behind."
"This is not the time for playing around. Are you all familiarized now?" Fula approached, riding her Horned Eagle Beast. She hadn’t brought her animal Partner. Her Black Panther, upon her departure, would enter the jungle on its own and return to the Elven Royal Court via land, a journey it should complete within three days. Though slower than flying, the nature of the Horned Eagle Beasts, magical beasts that they are, hardly changes; they wouldn’t allow a powerful Demigod magical beast to get close and cling to their backs, hence the need for this slower mode of travel.
"Has everyone taken off already?" Catherine looked down to check, and indeed, all the Horned Eagle Beasts had already soared into the sky. Among them were about twenty without riders, prepared for those carrying heavy gear, such as Conaida, the heavily armored shield guard, and Catherine, clad in thick scale mail with two shields, and also including Freya, whose bag was filled with various metal parts. Of course, even if there were no metal parts in the bag, the beautiful Princess could arguably be listed among those needing a change of mounts, although she firmly denied this. Noticing that everyone was ready, the Knight girl glanced at her teammates, including the little skeleton that Vivian held in her arms, all securely fastened to their bird saddles, and then Catherine nodded to Fula, "Should be no problem, we can set off now."
The next moment, as if no command was given, but all the Horned Eagle Beasts let out a loud eagle cry in near unison, spreading their wide wings. (To be continued.
