Chapter 980: Chapter 97: The End of the Voyage
In the Yarran World, not any random cluster of trees can be called a forest. To be worthy of the name, a forest must meet three criteria. First, it must be sufficiently large and densely treed; however, the first point isn’t that important, as there are many places on the Continent that fit this description, but only three are termed forests. Second, it must have distinct characteristics, with forests of similar traits generally classified as the same one, because similar features mean they grow in similar regions. Third, and most importantly, it must possess an enduring regenerative quality that makes it invulnerable to depletion. Without this trait, no matter how dense the trees or how vast the area, there would come a day when it might be cleared. A true forest, however, exists eternally alongside the goddess. Hence, there are only three areas in the entire Yarran World that are known as forests. As the foremost of the three major forests of the Yarran World, the Forest of Death, aside from its vast size, also has its own unique aspects.
"The Shining Forest is a land of perpetual day; it’s dim during daylight and dazzlingly bright at night. The trees within typically only reach about ten meters in height, with undergrowth battling for the scarce sunlight between them. The Magical Beast Forest is eternally cold, with the sparsest trees and almost no impediments between them. This means that aside from the occasional two or three-story tree, there’s barely any underbrush on the ground." By the fourth day, the Skyboat, moving at full speed, was gradually nearing the outskirts of the Forest of Death. Standing at the railing and gazing northward, the passengers could make out the faint dark mass stretching to the horizon—undoubtedly, the Forest of Death, famed as the Demigod’s graveyard. Of course, that was just the relatively safe part known as the Lost Forest. On the Skyboat, nearly all passengers had left their cabins, gathering in small groups, leisurely awaiting the final leg of the journey. Pannis naturally stayed by the side of several young ladies, pointing in the distance to the shadow at the edge of their vision, quietly explaining, "As for the Forest of Death, well, it’s right in front of us. If I asked you to describe your first impression in one word, what would you think?"
"Do you really want to know?" The young ladies gave Pannis a scornful look with their strange gazes. Catherine pouted and said, "Alright, our most direct impression is... we can’t see anything. From this far away, all we can make out is a shadow; how do you expect us to answer such a stupid question?"
"Uh, okay." Pannis opened his mouth but no words came out for a long time, and after a moment, he said with an embarrassed look, "Hahaha, the weather today is really nice, hahahaha."
"You’re getting sillier with your reactions." Although Vivian said that, the corners of her mouth were slightly turned up, and she said with a hint of pride, "If I had to pick a word, I would say it’s dense, incredibly dense. I never imagined a forest could be so thickly clustered."
No sooner had the Mage young lady finished answering Pannis’s question than the other two young ladies pulled her aside. Catherine knocked on Vivian’s head while Lina pinched the young lady’s face, both wearing unfriendly expressions and saying in a strange tone, "The Hawkeye Spell is quite useful, isn’t it." "And you must feel great using it secretly, right?" "Feeling smug after using it without telling us, right?" "Taking advantage of Freya not being here, right?"
"What are you talking about? I don’t understand, hey, don’t poke my waist, I’m starting to miss the days when I didn’t have a sense of touch, at least I wasn’t afraid of you guys, hey hey, I said don’t poke anymore, alright, alright, I give up, it’s just the Hawkeye Spell." Vivian laughed and protested in vain for a while, eventually capitulating to the threats of the two young ladies and casting the Hawkeye Spell to enhance their vision. However, when she offered it to Ava, it was refused by the girl who was always expressionless.
"You can actually see?" Lina’s bald head had grown fine fuzz, which might feel nice to the touch, though a few days earlier, when Pannis sought to confirm this himself, he suffered a miserable mistreatment. Since then, it had become an enduring mystery. Lina glared fiercely at Pannis, who was still staring at her bald head, then pulled the hood of her priest robe over her head before turning to Ava with curiosity, "I know you’re strong, but are your eyes that powerful too?"
"Yes, at this distance, this height, although it’s a bit blurry, it can still be seen," Ava answered stiffly, "If I could open The Third Eye, I would be able to see it clearly, but unfortunately, you don’t agree."
"Better not mention The Third Eye," Catherine instinctively glanced around and shook her head, "Although the forest goddess has likely informed the elves about your identity through an oracle, and the Light and Dark Twins also discovered this secret because of your loss of control that night, other people still don’t know. If it can be kept hidden, then let’s continue to do so, as it will save a lot of trouble, both for you and for others."
"You don’t need to explain these things to me," Ava replied mechanically, "Based on logical judgment, you wouldn’t harm me, so explanations are an entirely unnecessary action."
"Logical judgments can’t help you understand the human heart, you have already been able to think like a normal person, so try not to always rely on logic to decide," Catherine said as she stroked Ava’s golden hair, "By comparison, I’d much prefer you make decisions with emotion."
"I’m used to it, I’ll try," Ava replied indifferently, shifting her gaze back to the shadows in the distance that represented the forest, "Is this the forest? It’s my first time seeing one. The records of the goblins didn’t seem to contain the kind of real forest you just described."
"That’s quite normal, because during the era of the goblins, the deities had not yet created this kind of real forest," Pannis explained with a nod, "The appearance of forests began early in the Third Epoch, around the same time the elves came into existence, so of course, there would be no mention of them in goblin records. A true forest, in a sense, is an extension of the will of the forest and the Gods of Life, the broader and denser the forest, the greater the attention the deities have invested in it."
"That’s why the elves chose this forest, which receives the most attention from the forest gods, as their home," Pannis continued, "Hmm, of course, perhaps it’s the other way around, the gods are actually focusing on their own children and so, by extension, they attend to this forest too, who knows... Hey, Lina, I understand that it’s your first time seeing the Forest of Death, and I can understand your admiration or surprise, but could you please stop pinching me? I think I could use your Healing Spell support."(To be continued. If you like this work, please visit qidian.com to vote for recommendation tickets and monthly tickets.
