Chapter 977: Chapter 94: The Method to Enter the Forbidden Area

"Phew, finally rescued," Pannis said with a face full of grievance as he blew on the bite marks remaining on his hand. "I was almost bitten off by that little dummy. Puff puff, it hurt so much, I almost bled."

A few minutes earlier, Catherine had picked up the fragile-bodied skeletal Little Deer with a face of utter despair. The little skeleton was just being mischievous, really quite obedient. Without needing Catherine’s persuasion, it had released its grip, allowing the knight girl to pick it up, and not forgetting to promptly take back its skull and place it on its neck, clacking its lower jaw and laughing happily. Annie, who was nearby, saw this and immediately circled around Pannis’s head, floating towards Catherine with an expectant face and open arms. With a wry smile, Catherine used her other hand to pick up Annie, and looking at both little Undead chattering away about who knows what in her arms, she could only sigh that her life had become more and more exciting.

"These two little ones are indeed very cute and don’t at all resemble Undead," Flare said as she approached Catherine and reached out to stroke the smooth skull of the Little Deer. "I remember very clearly the feeling of battling Undead back in the day; they were dark, cold, and shrouded in an aura of death. Both the Life Force within me and the light within Maya are extremely sensitive to such starkly opposite auras. Likewise, those Undead were just as sensitive to the auras emanating from us. But now, it’s almost impossible to sense the Undead aura from these little ones. They are becoming more like the living, and what’s most unbelievable is that when they are around Maya and me, they show no signs of discomfort. In theory, Undead of their rank would become weak just by being close to us, without us doing anything, simply from the natural aura our bodies emit. Yet these two little creatures remain as active as usual. It’s very curious what could have caused such Undead to appear."

"You won’t find them cute once they start biting you," Pannis remarked to the Little Deer, baring his teeth in a threatening expression, but unfortunately, when it came to baring teeth, no one could outdo a skeleton. Naturally, Pannis ultimately lost the expression battle to the Little Deer and could only say resentfully, "They’re now too lively."

"You think that’s a bad thing?" Flare’s gaze shifted, her words had a pointed undertone as they swept across Pannis’s face, "I don’t think so."

"You think it’s a good thing? I don’t think so," Pannis replied with the same phrase, countering and answering. Although the meaning behind his words wasn’t clear, it was obvious both understood each other’s thoughts, and so Pannis shook his head and said, "You’re too optimistic. Often, when something can go very wrong, it will turn out just as bad."

"Dillie, someone’s misusing your quote, oh right, he’s sleeping in the cabin," Flare teased, covering her mouth before she continued, laughing in a low, husky voice, "Actually, you’re just too pessimistic, and besides, Dillie has explained before that the meaning of that phrase is not what you’ve described. Your interpretation is just a misunderstanding."

"Regarding matters related to the Undead, I can’t be optimistic." Pannis smiled noncommittally without dwelling further on this issue, and turned to Odin, saying, "Just as I mentioned before, even if you had planned to organize a team to investigate the questionable death of the former chairman in depth, I’m afraid there wouldn’t have been any findings. Beyond the news from the Divine, the Drakes’ Mina personally went to investigate for verification. I asked Lady Mina in detail, about the range of the anomalies, and the outermost location is just by the edge of the bone burial grounds. I don’t need to explain how deep into the forest that is, do I? Even if you wanted to investigate deeply, unless you formed a team entirely of Demigods, could you truly reach the range of the bone burial grounds? And even if you could go deep inside, it would be in vain, remember the Oracle of the Forest Deity was very clear, the anomalies of the forbidden land for the living only surfaced recently. You wouldn’t have discovered anything thirty years ago."

"So are you saying that the former chairman’s death has nothing to do with the Divine Servants?" Odin tentatively asked, "Or at least, there is no necessary connection with the anomalies of the forbidden land for the living?"

"My thoughts are two extremes, either there is no connection at all, or it’s the complete opposite," Pannis said bluntly, without sparing feelings, "Two Demigods leading eight legendary adventurers, and two patrons, could this team of twelve truly make their way deep into the Forest of Death smoothly? Initially, her Majesty, okay, okay, initially it was Flare who personally escorted them to the border of Okain Mountain Range, so she distinctly recalls that from their entry into the Forest of Death to the former chairman escaping alone, it took a total of seventy-seven days. Strange, isn’t it? What are the odds that a team of such strength could survive in the Forest of Death for seventy-seven days? Of course, they could wander around the outskirts of the Forest of Death for dozens of days and then come straight out, but I really don’t think those Demigods would make such an effort to do something as boring as that."

"Does that mean, calculating from the time, my grandfather and the others must have entered a very deep area?" Catherine asked, puzzled, "Even to the extent of successfully breaching the Core Area? But as you just said, from the point of strength, it’s unlikely, isn’t it? We are prepared to delve deep into the Core this time because several of us aren’t affected by the Soul Assault, allowing us a relatively safe passage..."

"You see, you’ve thought of it as well," Catherine started to say, then all of a sudden, she became speechless, raising her head in shock to look at Pannis who smiled, unsurprised, and said, "What if that path was safe for them as well? Then all the mysteries can be explained, why the old chairman confidently moved so many guild elites to mount an expedition to the Forest of Death, why your grandfather was so certain the risk of this journey wasn’t great, why even knowing it involved going deep into the forest, those legendary adventurers were willing to go—it’s because they could enter through a safe passage that no one else could traverse before."

"Is this... really possible?" Odin asked, frowning deeply with skepticism, "They successfully found a way to avoid the Soul Assault? No, I see what you mean now, you think those two patrons were definitely Necromancer servants of the Undead, they used the methods of Necromancer mages to allow the old chairman and the rest to pass through the land forbidden to the living."(To be continued.
