Chapter 973: Chapter 90: Tempting Commission
"Speaking of which, the former chairman is also responsible for your grandfather’s death," Odin waved his hand to stop Catherine from saying anything more and sighed, "Back then, not many in the Guild knew about this, and now I am the only one left who is still not retired, so it’s normal that no one told you. Actually, if it weren’t for this incident, I wouldn’t have wanted to tell you either. After all, in this matter, the chairman himself had broken Guild rules, and the death of an acting chairman during an adventure would deal a significant blow to the Guild’s reputation. Therefore, the public announcement was that the former chairman’s old wounds had recurred, and after persisting for ten months, he finally passed away due to complications. If possible, I had hoped to bury this affair as a secret in history, but now, I feel it’s necessary to tell you, even if Lord Marquis didn’t talk to you, I was planning to find some time in these next couple of days to discuss the past with you."
"Breaking Guild rules?" Catherine thought for a moment and nodded, "Right, according to the regulations, after someone becomes the chairman, they are no longer allowed to undertake missions as merely an adventurer. That’s the rule you are referring to, isn’t it? Let me think, since you said the former chairman was responsible for my grandfather’s death, hmm, there must have been a very tempting task issued within the Guild, a task with rewards that lured the chairman, but his status as the chairman prevented him from taking it up, so he turned to my grandfather, hoping to collaborate on this mission. However, they ultimately encountered fatal danger. I guess that’s about it."
"Yes, the actual situation isn’t much different," Odin nodded, "So, as you see, your grandfather did not deliberately lie to conceal the danger he was facing, as Lord Marquis stated. When he set out, he genuinely didn’t know the dangers ahead of him, so I hope Lord Marquis won’t blame Mr. Field in his heart."
"Hm?" Snape didn’t notice Odin’s last request and instead asked awkwardly, "You’ve been eavesdropping since then? No, it must have been even before that."
"You’re underestimating the hearing of a demigod ranger, Lord Marquis. If you wanted to keep a conversation secret, you should have gone down to the cabin. With my perception and focused attention, I can at least hear normal conversations within three-quarters of the deck," Odin said with a wry smile, "And obviously, I’m not the only one. To my knowledge, Queen Flare, High Priestess Alcmene, and Mr. Kyle—oh, I mean Mr. Pannis—at least the four of us could definitely hear what you two were discussing earlier. As for others, I can’t guarantee they didn’t hear. The other three refrained from interrupting you two because they deemed it inappropriate, so they pretended to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, um, maybe, possibly, probably, they were pretending to have fun, I guess."
Following Odin’s gaze, Catherine felt a strong impulse to cover her face. Pannis had finally escaped from chasing Horned Eagle Beasts, but a group had gathered and started a new game. For some reason, Pannis had encouraged everyone to join his playful mischief and begun a game of dodgeball. Dodgeball was a game among professionals which used many fist-sized inflatable leather balls; players formed a circle and threw balls rapidly while others dodged in the middle. If the person dodging got hit, they lost a point, and if the thrower’s ball missed everyone and wasn’t caught by a fellow thrower, resulting in the ball flying out of the circle, the thrower’s side lost a point. The first side to lose ten points would switch roles, and after a round, the side with the fewer points would lose.
That was the theory, anyway, but Pannis had clearly altered the rules. His behavior now was less playing a game and more outright bullying. Somehow, he had conned the Winged twins into flying up high, and then a group below bombarded the targets in the sky with dodgeballs, having a blast. However, even as the targets of this bullying, the twins in the sky were also enjoying themselves, dodging the leather balls coming from every angle and returning any balls they caught to those on the ground. The sky was filled with the crisp, joyous laughter of the twin girls.
The two small Undead who had been following Pannis around, pretending to be little tails, had stopped disguising themselves as dolls since getting on board and seemed interested in the game. Annie floated up first, weaving through the air with the twins. The little banshee, being incorporeal, couldn’t be hit by balls that lacked Aggression. Still, she found the game fascinating, flying and laughing even happier than the Winged twins. This made Little Deer on the deck quite anxious; the little creature also wanted to join in the fun in the sky, but as a skeleton naturally couldn’t fly and keep up, it could only anxiously hop around on the deck.
Fortunately, Annie was a clever child and quickly came up with a solution, leading to a terrifying scene. In the sky, the twin Winged people led a little banshee to dodge balls thrown from all directions while the banshee clasped a polished skull in her hands, its mandible continuously moving as it let out excited shrieks. On the deck, a petite headless skeleton joined the group of throwers, casually picking up a ball from the ground and tossing it into the air with surprising accuracy.
Catherine turned her head away with a conflicted look, refusing to watch the girls who had also joined the chaotic battle and helplessly let her shoulders droop, groaning to herself in a self-hypnotic manner, "That’s right, they did it to save us from embarrassment, it must be intentional, it’s definitely not because they want to play, absolutely not."
"I have to say, you do have it tough sometimes," Odin couldn’t hide the smile on his face: "Lord Kyle, nowadays, does indeed cause a great deal of, a very great deal of headaches."
"No, don’t bring that up, Chairman," Catherine bit her lip, trying hard to forget the scene she just witnessed: "Quick, quick, let’s continue with our previous conversation, that’s right, keep telling me about my grandfather’s story, I didn’t see anything just now."
"Hehe, alright, alright, since I’ve decided to tell you the details, I naturally won’t hide anything anymore. Let me think about where to start," Odin nodded, pondering: "Well, let’s start from the commission that moved the former chairman, it was a task worth seven hundred thousand gold coins."
"Just seven hundred thousand?" Catherine asked in confusion: "Such an amount wouldn’t have compelled my grandfather and the previous Chairman to risk their lives and venture deep into the Core Area of the Forest of Death."
"The ones who issued the task were two Legendary Rank Mages, and the content of the task was to find a ruin. After its discovery, the two Mages would only transcribe the knowledge within the ruins. As for the originals containing that knowledge and all other items within the ruins, they were all to belong to the party taking on the commission," Odin sighed as he spoke: "As for the owner of the ruins... it’s said to be the ruins of the Deities."
