Chapter 950: Chapter 67: The Different Tribes
"Our giant shield guards and throwing axemen troops can’t possibly maneuver to set up defenses along the Country of Sand," grumbled a Dwarf clad in full armor, gulping down a large cup of potent barley wine in a dimly lit, common tavern in the Neville City administrative area. He slammed the huge wooden cup, with a capacity of a liter, down on the table with an ear-shattering thud. The Dwarf carelessly wiped the liquor from his beard and spoke with a thick, nasal voice, "I’ve been to that godforsaken land of the Country of Sand, nothing but sand everywhere. With the weight of our giant shield guards, we can’t move freely there. You take a few steps and sink into the sand. To ask us to deploy there is sheer torture. Elves, let those Elves man the defenses in the Country of Sand. They’re so light, perfect for that place. Hahaha, yes, that’s right, I’m so clever."
"Acting like you have the authority to make decisions, idiot." Elves and Dwarves could be considered neighbors and, in reality, their diplomatic relations were quite good. But due to differences in artistic style, lifestyle, and personal preferences, the members of the two races often found each other disagreeable. When they came together, it usually resulted in mutual disdain and sarcasm. Fortunately, it never escalated to a real fight. The current situation was a clear example; right after the Dwarf laughed heartily, presenting his unique perspective, the Elf male seated at the same table gracefully took a sip from a crystal goblet filled with aromatic wine, and mockingly said, "If you were really so clever, why hasn’t the council chosen you to represent them at the military meetings? Hmm, you’re all talk. If they really asked you to join the meeting, I bet you would have been so scared that you would dig a hole and hide in the ground."
"It’s the Upper Rank council now, not a three-person council anymore. When will you daydreaming Elves ever catch up with the times?" The Dwarf banged on the table forcefully and bellowed, "And, I am not a Cavern Dwarf, you ass! We Mountain Dwarves do not like digging holes. Even if the Cavern Dwarves dig, it’s not because they are scared and looking for a place to hide. We wouldn’t be scared by just attending a meeting either. It’s you wood creatures who hide all day in the forest. Hmph, you have the nerve to talk about me when you are also outside the meeting, drinking away your time? Didn’t the Elven Royal Court fail to invite you to join the meeting as well? Ha, do you think you’re any better than me?"
"Because I’m just an Upper Rank forest guard, tasked with protecting the envoy’s entourage along the way. Of course, they wouldn’t let me join the meeting." The Elf shrugged, not at all upset by the Dwarf’s mockery, and casually stated, "I know I don’t understand matters of racial decisions, so I don’t talk nonsense like you do after drinking too much. That’s the thing with you brutes; a few cups of barley wine and you go crazy. Drink a bit more, and you might even forget your own surname. Hmm, have you forgotten it yet, Mr. Eyre? Do you still remember what your surname is?"
"Asshole, you just said my surname is Eyre, and now you’re asking me what it is?" The Dwarf slammed his hand on the table and roared, "Are you making fun of me?"
"Of course, you only just realized? Slow as ever." The Elf sneered and teased, "What, getting angry again? This must be the third time today, right? Hahaha, do you also want to jump up and hit me in the knees?"
Since the adventure team arrived in Neville City five days ago, everyone had clearly felt that Neville City was gradually changing. The number of people from various races on the streets was increasing, and the flow of people was getting larger. Walking on the streets, one could encounter intelligent beings of various races at any moment. Beastmen shouting in groups, Dwarves carrying giant axes and tower shields, making clanging sounds with every step, Elves with their elegant manners and perpetual scent of vegetation, Lizardmen with bows and arrows sticking out their tongues and flicking their tails, Sea People always shrouded in a mist of water and emitting a faint smell of the sea, Winged people who never walk on roads but only fly across the sky, leaving feathers scattered about, the numbers of each major race in Neville City were growing more and more. As for fully-armored squads of knights, arrogant mages with pointed hats, and various clergy in priest robes, they appeared in groups, making the residents of Neville City feel especially intrigued. After all, for these ordinary people who have lived in the city all year round, if it weren’t for this grand assembly of all races from the Yarran World, they probably would never have the chance to see so many different races at the same time in their lives. Being in such an environment, these ordinary humans became more aware that humankind is not, as people believed a thousand years ago, the dominion over this land, but only by living in harmony and jointly developing with these other races can they truly rule this land together.
After these races arrived at the capital of the Neville Federation, they did not confine themselves in the hotels prepared by the Neville Federation Council for them. After all, the meetings were not starting immediately, and even after starting, there would be a ten to fifteen-day discussion period. In such a long time frame, keeping everyone isolated from the world was not practical. Therefore, the representatives of various races, especially their guards, toured and wandered through the city streets like a group of ordinary tourists. Most of the attendees and their guards did not often have the opportunity to travel in other races’ cities, and even if they had been to Neville City before, it was just a brief visit. Having ample time to experience the city from the perspective of the common people was a rare opportunity, so everyone was fascinated and eager to satisfy their curiosity.
Especially since this was not just any city, but Neville City, a city soaked in money, wine, and beauties. The first thing these foreign creatures learned to do upon arrival was to flood into the Sleepless City at night like the locals of Neville, to enjoy the night-time pleasures of a human metropolis. Although the aesthetic standards of the races were not entirely the same and they often lacked interest in the opposite sex, their enthusiasm for fine wine and food, music and dance, and gambling and entertainment was no less than that of humans. Therefore, one could see the presence of other races in all entertainment venues, day and night.
Of course, the more people gathered, the more likely conflicts would arise. Fortunately, both sides were very restrained. The Neville Council issued the highest level of orders, demanding that all businesses within a certain range provide the greatest convenience to these foreign visitors, and the leaders of the various race delegations likewise issued strict orders, not allowing any incidents of harm to occur, with severe penalties for violations. Therefore, the city remained peaceful overall. However, noisy disturbances like the recent one were always inevitable.
"So this is your reason for causing a ruckus in the Sleepless City with Her Majesty the Queen and the two Winged ladies?" (To be continued.
