Chapter 923: Chapter 40 The Hamster Named Lina
"No, I’m not, my name is Vivian." Lina replied without turning back to the direction from which the voice came, "You’ve mistaken me for someone else."
"Mistaken for someone else?" The owner of the voice looked at the silver-haired priestess girl, then at the hammer and spellbook hanging at her waist, and gave a pained smile before saying helplessly, "Stop joking, who else could have these features but you?"
Pannis looked up and spotted a woman in her thirties dressed as a nun speaking. Judging by the emblem on her clothes, she must also be a clergy member of the Temple of the Earth Goddess. It was no wonder she recognized Lina. However, Pannis’s face suddenly changed; he stared intently at the square behind the nun, barely concealing the panic in his heart, and said in a suppressed voice, "What, what, what is that? How can such a thing exist in the world, it’s truly terrifying."
The nun was startled and looked back following Pannis’s gaze. Behind her, the square was still peaceful, people were resting by the flower beds, white pigeons with pleasing coos fluttered about, and vibrant rainbow butterflies danced among the flowers. Everything seemed as normal as ever, with nothing to be alarmed about. The nun, still unconvinced, looked around again but found nothing; puzzled, she turned back only to see the figures of Pannis and Lina disappearing into the distance as they ran farther and farther away.
"Hey." The nun called out to Lina’s fleeing figure, laughing and crying, "Helena, I knew it was you! Visit more often when you can, everyone misses you, hey, don’t just run—did you hear me?"
"Heard it, heard it." Lina replied while fleeing, "I’ve told you, I’m not Helena, why don’t you believe me? Alright, I’ll visit on behalf of the Helena you mentioned if I’ve got time, goodbye now."
"You rogue, still saying you’re not her." The nun, in a posture unbecoming of a clergy member, put her hands on her hips and muttered angrily, "You just wait, the next time I see Cynthia, I’ll tell her all about this so she can come and teach you a lesson. Don’t think I don’t know—you met her over a year ago. She came back and told everyone, just you wait and see."
"Huff, huff, huff." After escaping the square, Lina, catching her breath with Pannis panting heavily beside her, finally stopped. Although the run wasn’t long, laughing and running at the same time had made it impossible for the priestess girl to catch her breath properly. She was still gasping vehemently, yet she persisted in laughing while she panted, "Huff, huff, huff, huff, we finally shook her off. Hahaha, your timing just now was perfect."
"That must have been a friend from your childhood, right?" Pannis, still breathing evenly, asked with a resigned look on his face, "Since you’ve met, wouldn’t it have been better to just see her face to face instead of so nervously avoiding her?"
"That woman is like a billboard—anything you tell her will be known by almost everyone in the church within twenty-two hours, and in another twenty-two hours, it will spread through every temple in the Temple District. Give her enough time, and she might as well broadcast it to the entire Yarran World," Lina rolled her eyes as she spoke. "Her power is too terrifying, so some things must definitely be kept from her until the very last, it’s already a consensus within the church."
"Well, if it’s really like you said, then I have to admit, from a certain perspective, her strength is even greater than a demigod’s," Pannis said with a wry smile, "No wonder you fled so quickly."
"Forget it, in order not to have her inform the entire clergy, let’s just go to the temple now," Lina said resignedly, shaking her head and changing her plan, "On further thought, it’s good, her appearance actually stopped my prolonged hesitation; well, in this light, she must have been guided by the great Denia, here to encourage me. Praise the Lord, whose splendor will surely illuminate my path, for where Your scepter points, is the direction of my life."
"Uh, I think you’re slightly exaggerating," Pannis said with a twitching lip, managing a dry laugh, "I personally think it was just some idle person coming out for lunch. But anyway, since you like to think so, I have no evidence to counter it, let’s just assume it’s so."
"Praise the glory of the merciful God," Lina said as she made a square in front of her chest, continued to pray softly for a few more sentences, and then, with renewed spirit, linked arms with Pannis and moved forward, "Since the Lord has guided us, I shall fear nothing, for every hardship is just a test and training from the Lord for me. I will overcome all obstacles to achieve the results I desire. So, let’s hurry, I will not be fearful anymore, yes, that’s right."
"Yeah, I believe you," Pannis said, nodding earnestly, "But, if you could relax your hand that’s about to dig into my arm a little, I’d believe you even more, seriously, you’re almost tearing my clothes."
"Nonsense, I’m not even exerting any force," Lina retorted, her face growing paler as they neared the Temple of the Earth Goddess and her muscles tensing up, but facing Pannis’s teasing, the girl maintained her stubborn stance, "I’m not scared at all, not nervous in the slightest, absolutely not nervous. Uhm, maybe we should sit by the flower beds first?"
"Hahaha," Pannis burst into laughter. In the adventure team, everyone was well aware that the lively, curious, and changeable Lina, though often disguising herself with characters from books, was actually as timid as a little hamster. Constantly hoping to curl up in the dark and cramped cave of her soul, peering out at the world through a small hole, only daring to step out a few cautious steps in the world outside the cave when nestled among a few most trusted friends. Any stimulation would trigger her immediate retreat back into the cave of her soul, shielding herself again with a sturdy disguise. Hence, even as one of her family, Pannis seldom saw the girl without her disguises, especially her cute, animal-like reactions which made it impossible for Pannis to control his laughter, patting the girl’s head, even as she puffed up her cheeks, rolled her eyes, and glared at him.
"Hmph, just wait till we get back and I tell Big Sister about this. She’ll definitely have a serious talk with you," the priestess gritted her teeth, suppressing the urge to bite, and flicked her head, saying, "Keep laughing and you won’t be coming with me."
"I’m sorry, my mistake," Pannis contorted his face trying to hold back his laughter, stammered, "Please do forgive me, hahaha."(To be continued.
