Chapter 917: Chapter 34 Catherine’s Promise
Not only did Pannis look unexpectedly frustrated by the failed plan, but even Catherine herself suddenly raised her head and exclaimed, "Grandpa Snape, how come you..."
The Old Marquis leaned weakly against the chair, looked up blankly at the ceiling, and after a long while he sighed and said, "I am a merchant, I never undertake things that are bound to fail. Just like now, I really want to urge you not to go, but what’s the point? The character of three generations of your family is too similar, once you decide that something must be done, it’s useless for anyone to say anything; you’ll do it anyway, no matter what. So why should I bother persuading you."
Catherine gripped Snape’s hand tightly, guiltily saying, "Grandpa, trust me, I will do my utmost to come back alive. My partners and I have been through countless battles and faced countless crises. This time, we will fight side by side, defeat all enemies, and resolve everything successfully. Please believe me, I won’t make you sad again."
"Remember your promise to me, I am already old and truly can’t bear the pain of losing another child, especially you, so please, don’t make Grandpa sad again." The Old Marquis’s trembling hand stroked Catherine’s face, saying sorrowfully and pityingly, "Poor child, you should now be wearing the prettiest dresses, attending balls, becoming the center of attention, the object of admiration and infatuation for young men in the entire human world. What you should be worrying about every day is choosing which dress is prettier, which perfume is more charming, not, like now, wearing thick armor to battle fierce magical beasts in the wilderness, nor should you be concerned about death threats every day, worrying whether you can come back alive each time you go out. Poor child of the Field family, this isn’t the life you should have, don’t follow the same old path as your father and grandfather."
"Okay, okay, I understand," Catherine said with a forced smile, "Don’t worry about me, I need to be alive to share that bottle of wine with you every year, how could I leave you so easily? And you don’t have to feel sorry for me, this is the path I’ve chosen for myself, the life that I am pursuing. This kind of life fills my heart with joy and fulfillment, so maybe from your perspective, you think I am pitiable, but from my standpoint, this life has an irresistible allure. Even if you asked me to leave now, I couldn’t."
"I understand, I really do," the Old Marquis sighed deeply and personally poured a glass of wine for Catherine, then earnestly filled a glass for each of the young ladies and Pannis, sincerely saying, "Masters, I was somewhat out of line earlier, neglecting everyone’s feelings, and I am truly sorry. I hope you could forgive an old man’s excessive concern for a child. In the days to come, I humbly ask you, Masters, to continue to stay by Catherine’s side as if you were family, just like before."
Vivian and Ava, both small and delicate, looking like little girls, didn’t say a word. Their downcast eyes flickered slightly, and no one could tell what they were thinking. However, knowing their past, one could rather guess it. Only Freya looked at ease, representing the others as she picked up her glass and gently clinked it with the Old Marquis, smiling as she said, "Your Excellency, we are well aware of your care for Catherine, and no one blames you. You have no need to mind it."
"Thank you for your understanding," the Old Marquis said, looking at Freya’s round face. "And first of all, I want to especially thank you, Miss Freya, if it weren’t for you just now, I’m afraid I still wouldn’t know about your decision."
"Perhaps letting the person who loves you know in advance that you are going to face life-threatening danger is a very cruel thing, but hiding that danger from the person who loves you, while fully aware of it, is actually even more cruel." Freya said with a gentle smile, glancing at Catherine, who was biting her lip, her voice as pleasant as always, "I love Catherine just as much as you do and don’t want her to make a wrong move in a moment of confusion that would sadden both you and her. That’s why I took it upon myself to go against her wishes and tell you about this in advance. Therefore, you don’t need to thank me, it’s something I must do as Catherine’s family."
"Regardless of your reasons, I must express my gratitude to you." The old man had by now regained his composure, nodding to Freya with a self-assured demeanor before turning to Pannis and saying, "And Master Kyle, no, Master Pannis, I harbor the same gratitude towards you. Without you, I believe Catherine would have had no chance to appear before me today, and I would not have had the opportunity to learn certain things."
"Um, actually, this could be seen as an accident," Pannis shrugged his shoulders, awkwardly withdrawing his hand that had already demolished half of the fruit on the table. He grabbed a napkin to wipe his face and said with an awkward laugh, "My original intention was just to take them for a stroll in Sleepless City, to fundamentally understand the beauty and ugliness of Sleepless City, or rather, the Neville Federation. That we had the chance to meet you can only be described as a coincidence of coincidences."
"Heh, it’s indeed just a coincidence, but coincidences are often the arrangements of the Deity of fate," Snape, who believed in the Deity of fate and future, muttered a few prayers before continuing with a smile, "Even after having left Neville for over a hundred years, your understanding of the Federation is still so thorough. Indeed, if one wants to comprehend the beauty and ugliness of this country, Sleepless City is the best choice."
"How come we didn’t realize it?" "Yeah, yeah, we didn’t feel it at all." "We just saw some people walking around the streets looking foolish." "And lots of groups of idiots shouting and hollering."
Turning their heads, they saw that at some point, the three creatures involved in the fray had ended their battle. They were now neatly lined up, lying on the soft carpet, propping their chins with their paws and watching the emotional exchange between the Old Marquis and Catherine with considerable amusement. They had been considerate enough not to interrupt until they were sure no further impact would occur, after which the two Winged girls began to reassert their presence with rapid speech that left no room for argument.
"Because you two are idiots," said the scorpion-tailed lion, lying in between the Light and Dark Twins, shaking off the mane on its body and speaking in a muffled voice, "With your intelligence, it’s hard to understand what is meant by beauty and ugliness."
"You’re the idiot." "Right, right, stupid lion," the Twins seemed to have worn themselves out from the earlier fight and only retorted a few words to Dillie’s provocation before they shifted their attention, "Brother Kyle, have you finished talking? Can you play with us now?"
