Chapter 602: Chapter 69 Hometown_1
"Gurgle gurgle, gurgle gurgle," Vivian was holding a spherical part given by Freya. She was rolling it back and forth on a gentle slope. Each time she threw the metal ball from her hand, it would roll back to her against the slope. Vivian’s gaze had always been fixed on the ball. Furrowing her brows tightly, she could not understand why this phenomenon occurred.
"Have you figured it out?" Lina and Catherine lost interest after watching for a while and started organizing their own things. After some time, they realized Vivian was still rolling the ball. They couldn’t help asking, "Seeing as you’re playing so enthusiastically, I take it you still don’t understand. I don’t quite understand though, we’ve encountered so many instances that upend our common sense on this journey. Why are you interested in this in particular? Is there something special about it?"
"Ah? Nothing special, it’s just that of all the things we saw before, even though they defy common sense, their significance is completely different compared to this slope." Vivian continued to play with the rolling ball subconsciously and replied casually. "The things we saw previously are just rare, they didn’t really overturn some fundamental knowledge. But this slope is different, the phenomenon here overturns the most basic laws of mechanics and is well worthy of research. In addition, think about it, big sis, what would happen if a large amount of water flowed here? We’ve already tried it. The water would also flow uphill along the slope. What if there was a lot of water? All the water would gather at the top along the slope, the more the gathering, the more it would be like supporting a water ball. This is too bizarre, it simply could not happen."
"Your argument itself is contradictory." Vivian’s explanation was quite simple, Catherine quickly understood her meaning. She looked up along the slope: "If, as per your idea, the water does gather uphill... no, how did it suddenly become so complex? It seems problematic whichever way you look at it."
"That’s why I have been thinking. But... oh no." Vivian suddenly exclaimed. As she was talking, she kept repeating the ball-tossing motion. This time, a moment of distraction made the metal ball hit a protruding tree root while rolling and was bumped into the air by the obstacle. Once again, everyone was surprised. The metal ball popped to the side and suddenly accelerated horizontally in mid-air, drawing a twisted arc, and finally hit Pannis’ foot directly.
"What is it?" Even in his sleep, Pannis was still alert to the outside world. He felt a threat in his sleep and rolled over subconsciously to avoid the incoming metal ball. He opened his eyes in a daze and looked around, puzzled: "What’s going on? Why did I feel like something was about to hit me?"
"That was just an illusion, yes, just an illusion." The girls looked at each other and unanimously said, "Nothing happened just now."
"Oh, it was an illusion, huh." Pannis’ face twitched. He casually picked up the metal ball that had hit a tree and stopped, and threw it back to Freya: "Why did you start playing with this kind of thing?"
"By the way, Pannis, come and look." Vivian ran over and grabbed Pannis’ hand, pulling him to where she had just stood. She excitedly repeated the previous experiment and then looked up at him seriously, "You have a lot more experience than I do, do you know why this is happening?"
"Interesting." Pannis did not touch the metal ball. Instead, he knelt on the slope, bending over and pressing his hand on the ground. He carefully groped along the ground, and after a while stood up and frowned. "I can be certain it’s not due to magnetism. This behavior is somewhat like a space anomaly."
"A twisted space?" Vivian’s eyes lit up and she said excitedly, "You also think it’s a matter of space?"
"It’s similar, but it’s not twisting, it’s overlapping." Pannis said, "It should be that there are two or more spaces overlapping on this slope. This situation occurs occasionally and isn’t rare. However, theoretically, when a spatial overlap occurs, the current space will be the dominant one and any overlapping spaces will be seen as a phantom, not affecting the main space. But it’s different here. Let me give you an example. Let’s assume there are only two spaces overlapped here, the main space we see is uphill, and the overlapping space is downhill. What we see and touch now is still the uphill slope of the main space, but what affects us mechanically is the downhill slope of the overlapping space. If the inclinations of the slopes of the two spaces are the same, I suppose the metal ball would remain stationary. But here, the downhill slope is obviously steeper than the uphill one, so this phenomenon of things rolling uphill occurs. Of course, these are just my guesses. I just sensed traces of overlapping spaces here and made these speculations based on this."
"But, if it’s really like this, what if there’s a flood?" Vivian repeated the questions she had discussed with Catherine earlier, "Would it form a lake on the top of the slope?"
"It shouldn’t. Judging from the speed of the metal ball rolling, the slope of the overlapping space downhill is not very steep." Pannis shook his head, "The water will gather upward, and after accumulating to a certain volume, because of its own weight ..."
"I get it, it’s a matter of mechanics." Vivian suddenly interrupted Pannis’ explanation and took out her notebook to start recording, ignoring everything else. Pannis was interrupted mid-sentence and gave a dry cough, only to shake his head with a wry smile.
"I don’t quite understand spatial issues." Catherine giggled behind her hand at Pannis’s pitiful face. "But, Vivian couldn’t figure it out after half an hour of research, and you seemed to understand it at a glance."
"If you had a friend who is so obsessed with spatial knowledge to the point of explaining it to others whenever they get excited, you’d understand it at a glance too," said Pannis with a wry smile. "If it was anything else, I might not be able to figure it out, but when it comes to spatial issues, well..."
"What’s wrong with you?" Catherine cried out when Pannis suddenly froze in place, his face twisted strangely. She hadn’t even had time to prepare her shield. Activating Charge instantly, her figure flashed behind Pannis, using her body and the Aggression Shield to protect his back.
"I’m fine, I’m fine. Don’t worry," Pannis quickly reassured Catherine. Her protective stance touched him, but he forced the emotion down, murmuring, "I just suddenly thought of something, and got a bit distracted."
"Starting off into space like that can scare people, you know." Catherine gave him an annoyed look. "What surprised you so much?"
Pannis didn’t answer, only directing Catherine’s attention towards Vivian with a look. Catherine quickly mirrored Pannis’s stunned expression, her lips trembling as she stared at him with wide eyes. Pannis nodded, whispering, "I think I’ve figured out how the goblins are hiding their secrets. I never expected them to go that far. We might have done something incredibly stupid. Scratch that, it’s not a ’might’, it’s pretty much the stupidest thing we could’ve done."
"Speak clearly," Catherine demanded impatiently. "Where are they hiding? And what stupid thing have we done?"
"Give me a moment to arrange my thoughts," replied Pannis. "I should be right this time."
"Shh, quiet for a moment," hushed Lina, who was suddenly with them. She pointed towards the trees, lowering her voice, "Do you see that?"
At Lina’s interruption, they followed her pointing finger. The temperature outside seemed to drop slightly and several powerful predators had emerged from their cool dens, prowling the wide, open cave grassland for prey. Several magical beasts even made it to the edge of the forest where the adventure team was located.
It made sense for Lina to be surprised because these magical beasts were very familiar to everyone. Not to say they had seen them in person, but each of them grew up hearing the legends of these beasts. Their appearance and characteristics were deeply ingrained in their memories and they wouldn’t mistake them for anything else.
This was a special group of magical beasts. Seven or eight of them formed a pack, resembling lions in appearance and habits. The males had grand manes and robust bodies, while the females were slender and agile, instinctively surrounding the males. Nobody would take them for regular lions, however, due to the large wings extending from their ribs and their upward-curving tails that ended in a poisonous, sharp hook, swaying in rhythm with the gentle breeze.
"Scorpion-tailed lions?" Catherine gasped, covering her mouth. "One of the heroes a hundred years ago was a scorpion-tailed lion. How could they be here? According to the legend, scorpion-tailed lions should be living in another world."
"So that’s how it is," understood Pannis. "There has always been a legend about scorpion-tailed lions living underground, in a world totally different from the surface. They have their own sun and ecosystem. It’s only under very rare circumstances that they can cross the boundary between the two worlds. I never understood this legend before and even the scorpion-tailed lions on the surface didn’t understand it. Who would’ve thought the so-called ’other world’ was actually here? This is the real home of the scorpion-tailed lions." (To be continued. If you like this novel, please vote for it on qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation.
