Chapter 571: Chapter 38 Earth’s Scar_1

(Apologies for the mix-up in the previous Chapters. The references to "Wound of the Earth" should actually be "Earth’s Scar". The real "Wound of the Earth" is far away in the Sighing Desert, has not moved to the Mountain Country, and has no plans to relocate in the future).

The Master Sun Huront drove his golden chariot across the Yarran Continent, leaving behind the heat of early autumn that still scorching and the bright light that illuminates the world. Under the sunlight, everything in the world shimmered with vibrant vitality, growing freely with the nourishment of the sun. However, there are always some people who prefer the figures of the three Lady Moonlight, who would rather reject the warmth of the sun and embrace the cold moon instead.

As the sun went down slowly, the temperature in the mountain wilderness also gradually decreased, and the coolness of early autumn began to fill the wilderness bit by bit before the arrival of the night. At the meadow at the foot of Felryas Mountain, Pannis crawled out of an exquisite small tent and stretched vigorously under the dusk sky. Just as he had finished stretching, a roasted, golden-brown, soft piece of bread flew towards his face. Even before the bread reached him, the enticing fragrance of sugar and butter from within it has already filled his nostrils. Pannis remained with his hands raised above his head, maintaining the stretch, only opening his mouth and turning his head so that the bread flew directly into his mouth.

"Mmm, it’s delicious," Pannis mumbled with the bread in his mouth, "It would be even better if there was some sour bamboo fruit jam on it."

"You could go find it yourself, I can’t conjure that up", said Catherine, who was roasting bread by a small fire pit. She rolled her eyes and continued, "Do you need a glass of Caliste white wine too? Along with some deep-sea roe sauce made in the City of a Thousand Islands?"

"No, sweet bread should be paired with Dorolan Champagne. That’s how the flavor balances." Pannis said very seriously. "And it should be paired with Leonard’s sweet foie gras sauce. If it’s paired with deep-sea roe sauce, the sweetness of the bread would overshadow the savory flavor of the roe."

"Enough with the nonsense." Catherine glared at him, "Go wake them up. We should be able to enter ’Earth’s Scar’ today."

"I just heard Ike getting up." Pannis said, "Lina and Vivian seemed to be having a local war over a comb, and from Freya’s heavy panting, she should be trying to squeeze herself into a tighter outfit. It might take some time."

"Mr. Pannis." Pannis turned abruptly to see Freya standing in front of the tent. She clasped her hands across her chest, a shy expression on her face, her eyes glistening with water. "You...you actually heard me changing clothes, so embarrassing... you... you... you must take responsibility for this, accept my fiery love."

In the next moment, Pannis had vanished on the spot, reappearing twenty meters away. He looked up at the sky, as though nothing had happened, and said, "Haha, the weather today is really good."

"Good weather?" Ike came out of the tent with sunglasses perched on his nose just in time, glanced up at the sky, and nodded. "It is as expected of a man praised by Mr. Klarke himself for his knowledge of the underground. Indeed, the moist air in ’Earth’s Scar’ tonight with such light rain is conducive for moving, yet the ground is not too damp and muddy to hinder travel. Indeed, it is good weather to descend into the ’Earth’s Scar’."

"Haha, it’s a light rain, indeed." Pannis laughed awkwardly, "Yes, I was thinking that."

"Enough fooling around, come have breakfast..." Catherine suddenly paused, changing her wording, "I mean, dinner."

Over the five days since they left Grand Highland City and headed to Felryas Mountain, the six of them had again adopted a nocturnal lifestyle. The reason was simple: Ike was a Cavern Dwarf. His eyes could see clearly in pitch-black caves, but he could not adjust to the daylight. In the early morning and evening, he could protect his eyes with sunglasses, but at noon, the intense light made him feel very uncomfortable through the sunglasses. Therefore, to accommodate his racial habits, everyone had to adjust their routines again, switching to being active at night. Fortunately, due to the exceptional physical fitness of everyone, they could clearly see everything around them even in the dark night under the moonlight, and it did not affect their activities.

"Since we’re already here." Ike sat down by the small fire pit, taking the bread that Catherine offered, "Mr. Pannis, isn’t it time for you to explain your plan to me in detail? You must have one, otherwise, considering the extent of Earth’s Scar below, even if you spent a human’s entire lifespan of a hundred years in there, you might still not be able to explore all the spaces."

"I indeed have a plan." Pannis played with the bread in his hand and said, "In fact, I told you at the beginning, our target is within this range around the Felryas Mountain."

"Are you sure?" A strange expression appeared on Ike’s face, creased like dry tree bark, a mix of anticipation and unease, "How extensive are you implying? How distinctive is the goblin relic you are trying to found?"

Pannis thought for a while, then took out some paper and a pencil from his backpack and quickly drew some lines and circles on the paper. Ike’s eyes lit up, he looked at Pannis with surprise, "By your ability to make this map, you’re qualified to explore the inside of the Earth’s Scar alone. This is the Nefarious Mountain Range, this is the Karaklo Mountain Range, I guess this circle is the Grand Highland City, and what is this northern circle? Oh, judging by the line of scale, this is the Summit City Forging Iron Fortress, thus this shadow would be the Darnes Plateau, and this triangle is the Peak of Felo Mountain Range. Very impressive, the error in distance is negligible."

"Yes, that’s the Peak of Felryas, which is to say, the mountain peak in front of us." Pannis pointed to the faintly visible mountain peak in the distance, "As for the range I mentioned, it’s right here."

"Let me calculate, let me calculate." Ike seriously studied the simple map, repeatedly measuring it with a ruler. After a while, he put down the ruler and said with contradictory excitement and nervousness, "This seems rather troublesome now."

"What’s the trouble?" Unnoticed, Lina and Vivian had already ended their little squabble and were now standing shoulder to shoulder behind Catherine. Vivian asked doubtfully, "Isn’t it a good thing that the range has decreased?"

"It’s not just about the range decreasing." Ike sighed, "I haven’t given you a basic introduction to the situation inside the Earth’s Scar, have I?"

"Actually, we have also ventured into an Earth’s Scar area in the Shining Forest." Lina, who seemed befitting of the template of the High Priestess Catheria of the Light God, spoke with an affable tone like a real Holy Occupation, her demeanor gentle, filled with tenderness for all creatures, "But I didn’t see anything particularly dangerous at the bottom of the Earth’s Scar, it just seemed like a very deep pit. In my consciousness, the difference between these two places is only the depth of the pit. However, according to Pannis and Vivian, some professional books write that the Earth’s Scar here at Felryas Mountain is exceptionally dangerous and terrifying, which is something I can’t understand."

"You mean the Dragonscar?" Ike showed blatant disdain on his face, scoffed, "That dares to call itself the Earth’s Scar? Indeed, considering its formation, it counts as an Earth’s Scar, but neither in terms of scale nor complexity, there’s no comparison between the two."

"We’d appreciate it if Ike could give us a detailed explanation." Lina smiled gently, "Having a detailed understanding about where we’re going would greatly assist our exploration, don’t you think?"

"Alright." Though Ike was rather impatient about introducing such basic knowledge, he did agree with Lina’s point and accepted soon enough, "Earth’s Scar is the symbol of Felryas Peak, and within the Mountain Country, there’s only this patch of dimples that’s Earth’s Scar. No one knows how Earth’s Scar came to be, but some speculate that it should have to do with the underground water course and unique soil quality. I don’t quite understand the academic side of it, but indeed there is a vast underground water grid here. Around Felryas Peak, there are more than thirty Earth’s Scar, the biggest one being 1,300 meters deep, with the largest diameter reaching 870 meters, and the area underneath the pit over 600,000 square meters. The caves themselves aren’t anything special, however, at the bottom of these Earth’s Scar pits, there are a lot of naturally formed tunnels, they are dry water channels from the past. These dense tunnels intersect and become as complicated as a spider web. Moreover, these spider-web-like tunnels are usually connected to empty underground caves that have not yet collapsed on the surface. Some people suspect that all of these Earth’s Scar might have been like these empty caves until an external force made the rock layer at the top collapse. That’s when these Earth’s Scar took the form that we see."

"But, those are all just surface phenomena, Earth’s Scar is far from that simple." Ike became excited talking about Earth’s Scar and had to calm down by drinking some water, he continued, "What true explorers refer to as the Earth’s Scar, isn’t just limited to these massive pits, but also includes these dense tunnels below. According to speculation, the tunnels below Earth’s Scar could number seventeen or even up to twenty-one layers. I reckon the deepest place could be two thousand to two thousand five hundred meters below the ground. Each layer spans different areas, the layers deeper below cover a larger area, and nobody knows what the bottom layer might look like because nobody has descended below the twelfth layer and lived to return. In these underground tunnels, apart from hazards from the natural environment, there are countless extinct magical beasts dwelling here. Among them, a lot of them were beings that vanished in the First Epoch. The First Epoch was the Golden Age created by God, magical beasts from then were much stronger than the beasts we see today."

"The area you’ve drawn, Mr. Pannis, that’s why I said it would be troublesome earlier." Ike explained in the end, "I have done a rather rough exploration of the first eight layers within the few dozen kilometers around Felryas Peak, but I didn’t discover any goblin relic. Therefore, if a goblin relic does exist, it can only be below the eighth layer. That’s why I believe it’s going to be very troublesome." (To be continued.
