Chapter 544: Chapter 13: Christo’s Treasure Room_1
Christo, the grey-green skinned goblin, was walking slowly using a walking stick, emerging from the elevator. His once nimble steps had turned shaky, his pointed ears had lost their support and were drooping on either side of his head. The usually vibrant eyes were now cloudy, a thick pair of glasses rested on his still pointed nose, and his stooped back and frail figure, all making him look ridiculously funny, like a clumsy clown from a village circus. A young maid, looking no more than fourteen or fifteen, was following closely behind Christo, ready to support the old goblin’s arm if he would allow it, but she hadn’t done so yet, due to Christo’s insistence. The old goblin was steadfast about fulfilling his own needs, not allowing others to help him - even with simple task as walking. So, the young maid, she was left to hover closely, ready to catch the old goblin if he tumbles, watching over his last shred of dignity through her actions.
"k... cough cough, Pannis, finally, you’re back," Christo’s clouded eyes sparkled with excitement as he saw the figure of Pannis standing at the front desk. With energy belying his age, he hurried towards Pannis, clutching tightly onto his arm, "I was going mad waiting for you, why did it take you so long?"
"For the last piece of the puzzle," Pannis shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly before replying, "When I left, I didn’t think that Doris, the Fox of the Sea, would send the puzzle piece first. Since they’ve sent the item, I had to complete the task."
"N...," Christo shook his head vehemently, "No, Pannis."
"Sir, I know already," Freya bent slightly, her chubby hand slyly hooked onto Christo’s arm, catching the old goblin off-guard. "Of the identity of the hero, I have figured it out. Hehe, keeping it from me didn’t work, I’m too clever to be fooled."
"You little thing." Christo was unmarried his entire life, hence without children, so he was excessively fond of his disciples of over ten thousand years, treating them akin to his children. Listening to Freya talk in a whiny tone with her pleasant voice made the old goblin’s body relaxed, as if feeling momentarily youthful. He gently patted Freya’s head, said with a gregarious smile, "You’re the smartest, aren’t you? Anyhow, your inference did surprise me. Alright, quit trying to act cute, let’s go. Show you what I’ve studied."
"Eh?" Freya exclaimed with surprise as she saw Christo not heading to the location of the elevator, instead moving in another direction, "Aren’t we heading to your study?"
"You still don’t understand him! This guy is extremely cautious. He definitely won’t carry something so important around, it’s definitely stored in the underground private-safe. If not, I wouldn’t ask him to come down, we’d have to walk the entire journey anyway," Pannis replied.
"Dammit, I am being cautious. Learn to choose your words! How am I a coward, you dumbass?" Christo extricated himself from Freya’s support, leading the way while grumbling a few times, sighing gently, "You always act the same, always concerned about others but never yourself. All your friends are watching, we don’t know whether to praise or bash you."
"Whether you bash or praise me, I wouldn’t listen," Pannis shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly, "Currently, there’s no need for you to bash me. By the way, this young lady looks familiar. Have we met? We’ve re-met coincidentally, why don’t we have a meal together after we’re done with our tasks?"
"Indeed, my older sister wasn’t wrong about you, you’re a beast. Even a fourteen-year-old isn’t spared." Freya quickly pulled the young maid behind her, yelled fiercely, "Of course you’ve met before. On the way to the wedding, she had been by my side, you must’ve seen her a couple of times since she left halfway. She’s my old personal confidante. I’ve seen her grow up, I’m warning you, don’t have any ideas about her. If not, I’ll inform my sister and probably you would have to hide up a tree for the entire day."
"I’m sorry. Please don’t do this," Freya’s threat was extremely effective, Pannis’ lips twitched while he retreated several steps. He stole a glance at the young maid from the corner of his eyes before replying, "You must be mistaken. Hahaha, how can I fancy her? Although she is cute and small, despite her short height, she has a great body proportion. But, she’s only fourteen! Hahaha, I can’t possibly fancy a child. You have to believe me."
"The more you speak, the less trustworthy you are," Freya gritted her teeth before telling the young maid, "Rene, you should return to the old man’s house to rest. Stay away from this beast, or else I’m afraid he will finish you all! Don’t worry, we will escort the old man home. The old man as well, for sure you have let her stayed in the study room for several days and she must be exhausted. Rest well."
"Alright, thank you, Miss," the young maid bobbed her head obediently. After getting Christo’s permission, she immediately fled from Pannis’ side, as if she was afraid of being devoured by him if she was too slow.
"Are you happy now?" Freya rolled her eyes at Pannis, promptly moving to Christo’s side as Rene’s replacement. Christo went over to a wall, knocking lightly on the metal wall a few times. The metal wall opened on its own, revealing a secret elevator behind it.
"Only six people possess the authority to use this elevator," the elevator moved smoothly and quietly downwards along the track on a steady pace. Christo spoke with a sense of pride, "I am the one who developed the speed control and dynamic balance functions, solving the problems of irregular speed and excessive noise in common elevators. Unfortunately, the materials used in the elevator are too complex and expensive, reducing the standards do not reduce the consumption of the material as well, hence making the elevator unsuitable for public use. I hope there will be someone who can take this to a higher level, finding a cheaper alternative material, creating a breakthrough in the architectural field of our Yarran World."
"You’re being too pessimistic, little Kera." Pannis teased. "Why pin our hopes on future generations? Who knows, this trip to the location indicated by the Code Disk might help us bring back some crucial technologies. Maybe then you can find inspiration from them and remedy this regret."
"Don’t learn from those kids and start calling me little Kera." Christo habitually shook his fists in annoyance, then heaved a sigh, "I hope so. I don’t even know what I’m hoping for anymore. I’m filled with anticipation and trepidation at the same time."
As they were talking, the elevator door opened with a swoosh, revealing a deep corridor. Pannis clicked his tongue in amazement, "It took us so long to get down here, and the temperature actually went up. It seems we descended quite deep."
"Of course." Christo stated, "We are now 500 meters underground. If someone in the elevator breaches the Tower of Colossus’ defense system without proper authorization, the crystal bombs hidden throughout this vertical tunnel will explode when the elevator reaches the midway point, burying the intruder hundreds of meters underground. Even a Demigod would be trapped for quite some time, which would be enough for them to ask the Starshine Tower or the Guild of Adventurers for help."
"Such cautious defense measures." Pannis nodded, "I remember you bragging to Nellie and me that the best stuff you mechanics have is hidden here, right?"
"Actually, you misunderstood. What you consider valuable isn’t here," Christo corrected with a shake of his head. "Only the most important things are stored down here."
"Oh, I see. You mean documents, experimental notes, formulas, blueprints and such," Pannis responded, immediately catching on. "Indeed, these blueprints and notes are more important than finished products."
"That’s correct; my research notes from various stages of my life are stored here, including the design concept for my Demigod-level Crystal Energy gun." An excited flush spread over Christo’s aging face. He boasted, "From the beginning of the First Epoch when crystal energy began to be utilized until now, only four Demigod-level Crystal Energy guns exist in the world. Each was created based on the user’s habits, using unique principles of manufacturing. This fifth one was made according to my own principle."
"I get it, you’re very talented." Pannis patted Christo’s shoulder, "But you’ve been standing in front of this door grinning like a fool for two minutes. Did you fall in love with this door since you’ve never been married?"
"Kyle, I find your tongue now sharper than those two annoying kids." Christo glared at Pannis, "Can’t you remind me in a more normal way?"
Pannis chuckled mischievously and graciously gestured to the door. After a while, the elderly goblin couldn’t help but join in the laughter. Shaking his head helplessly, he began to manipulate his magic on the door, but not before commenting, "This feels really good, as if we’re back in the past. Although the person I’m bickering with has changed to you."
Behind Christo, Pannis’ smile slowly faded, replacing with a melancholy gaze. His voice maintained its previous lightness, "I’m afraid there are quite a few traps laid out here, huh?"
"Of course. There are even more traps here. Even if you learned those trap-breaking skills from Aske, you still wouldn’t be able to handle it." Christo opened the door with one swift move, casually explaining, "No room for error from the moment you start channeling your magic to the end. It only allows for thirty seconds. If it exceeds thirty seconds, all the doors in the eight rooms of this path will lock. Only the Tower Master with the highest authority in the Tower of Colossus can reopen it. Moreover, after it’s locked, hellfire will ravage this pathway for an hour."
"That’s it?" Pannis felt it was not enough for such harsh defensive measures, "I don’t think so."
"Heh, the next step is inside," Christo dragged Pannis along and the three of them entered the secret room, "the worst is yet to come." (Story to be continued.
