Chapter 518: Chapter 81 Nightmare Spirit_1

"Rumble, rumble." The faint sound of thunder came from the sky. The girls in the fortress tilted their heads in confusion. The starry night sky was serene and deep, with three moons reflecting off each other. The brightest, the Silver Lady Mia, silently overlooked the earth from the clear sky, sprinkling her life-filled and bright moonlight onto the world. However, clear sky in one moment, was filled with dark clouds the next. The abruptly appearing dark clouds obscured the night sky, with thunder rumbling within, seeming as if rain could fall at any moment. The dark clouds, stubbornly appeared out of nowhere floated above the small island, blocked off the pure moonlight, making the island even darker.

"This is strange. It’s suddenly become overcast. "The three girls removed their gazes from the sky, and Lina muttered, "At that moment when the dark clouds appeared, there seemed to be an uncomfortable feeling. Has something happened?"

"You felt it too?" Freya asked in surprise, "How about you, Vivian? Did you also suddenly feel uncomfortable?"

"Yes, me too." Vivian nodded, "A distinct feeling, like some unknown energy suddenly expanded, even though it only brushed past our bodies, it made our bodies react naturally because the energy was too great."

"Hey, come here quick." Lina, who was still peering at the sky through the observing hatch, suddenly exclaimed, "Come on, look at those controlled sea creatures outside, big sister must have succeeded."

The girls once again peeked through the grates, the fighting outside the fortress had quietly stopped. All enemies no longer charged the defensive fortress, they all turned in unison, kneeled on the ground, with a hand on their chest and their heads bowed low. They looked like a group of soldiers being summoned by the king, paying their deepest respect to the ruler.

"Did you succeed, big sister?" Looking at this group of controlled sea creatures still as statues, the three girls’s gaze filled with uncertainty. Lina could not help but cry out loud, "Are you okay? Say something to us if you’re safe."

However, no one answered, only Lina’s lonely shout echoed on the desolate island. The color faded from Lina’s face, she bit her lip forcefully and said after thinking for a while, "Something may have happened, I need to go and check."

"Let’s go together. We are more worried about you going alone." Vivian picked up the big blue backpack, held on to her magical staff, and said, "It seems that the enemies outside will no longer attack us, we can all go together. You’re not the only one who’s worried about the big sister."

"Let’s keep the fortress here for now." Freya prepared slightly, "Let’s not dismantle it for now, just in case if anything happens, this can serve as an escape route."

Freya opened the fortress’s door, the three girls carefully came out. Surrounded by the fortress, the controlled sea creatures acted as if they didn’t exist. They neither spared them a glance, more less launched an attack. After standing on the edge of the crowd for a while and confirmed that nobody attacked them, the three girls began to step into the crowd. The crowd was jam-packed and congested, unavoidable to bump into those controlled sea creatures around when trying to pass through. If knocked over, they would only rise from the ground and resume their original pose, once again turning into statues.

The further the girls walked, the more chills they felt. Everything around was just too weird. Although the previous fighting was stressful, the pressure from the unusual scene in front was several times greater. They began to feel that they would rather face the madly attacking sea creatures than these statue-like beings.

The distance of more than 40 meters wasn’t far, even passing through the crowded crowd only takes three or four minutes. After a few minutes, the girls managed to pass through these controlled sea creatures and finally saw Catherine once again.

Compared to when she left the fortress, Catherine seemed to be alright except for being covered in dirt from digging. She sat in the pit she dug, with her hands hugging her legs, her chin resting on her knees, looking up at the dark clouds and silver moonlight shrouding the sky. Her face was blank, eyes empty. It seemed like she was lost in thought, and did not react to the arrival of the three girls.

"Phew." Seeing Catherine unharmed, Lina sighed in relief, leaned over Catherine and shouted, "Big sister, wake up, we came to find you, wake up, wake up for me!"

Amid Lina’s loud call, Catherine finally woke up like she was from a deep sleep, she looked at the three girls in confusion, it took her a while to understand what happened and said in surprise, "Why did you run over here, where are the enemies?"

"The enemies are bowing to you." Freya said, "It seems that you’ve already obtained the mission item."

"Yes, I got it." Catherine narrowed her eyes, looked strangely at her right hand. In the center of her silver hand armor, there was a small black horn laying. Catherine eyed the horn with a complex gaze and said, "This is what we were looking for, the culprit that caused this situation, the divine artifact known as the Nightmare Spirit."

"That small?" Lina, the most curious one, looked at the tiny horn in surprise, unable to resist reaching out to touch it. Catherine opened her mouth as if to say something, but in the end, she said nothing. However, Lina was disappointed. The delicate horn seemed like an illusion. Her fingers passed directly through it, and she didn’t feel anything. "Huh, what’s going on? Why can’t I touch it? Could this be the defensive reaction of the Divine Artifact, and only its master can touch it? So, sister, you’re already its master?"

"Indeed, the moment I picked it up, I became its master." Catherine just learned of this matter and her expression showed an indiscernible sense of relief. She nodded, "So, you can’t touch it? That’s good."

"Sister, you’re acting a bit strange." Lina’s expression gradually became serious, and Vivian and Freya on the side also became stern. Lina asked softly, "You haven’t been controlled by it, have you?"

"Pfft." Catherine couldn’t help but laugh. She shook her head and said, "Your imagination is too wild. It’s not targeting humans. How could it possibly control me?"

"But you’re indeed acting very strange." Freya also said, "From the moment we saw you, you’ve been absent-minded and your complexion is very strange. Did something particular happen? If there’s anything, just tell us. We’re all very worried about you."

"There’s really nothing. You’re overthinking." Catherine shook her head, "My absent-mindedness is due to other things."

"But just now, you called out the name of this thing, the Nightmare Spirit." Lina continued to ask, "Don’t tell me you just named it yourself. That excuse isn’t believable at all. How did you know its name?"

"That’s one of the reasons why I’m absent-minded." Catherine revealed a bitter smile and said softly, "As for what’s going on with this Divine Artifact, I already understand it very clearly."

"Oh, so it just has built-in memory for its information." Lina finally relieved and sat down next to Catherine, "What exactly happened that made you look so grim? Was it a grisly event?"

"I guess you could call it bloody." Catherine gave a bitter laugh and began to narrate softly, "Our previous guess was correct. This is indeed the Divine Artifact of the Nightmare and Fear Church, personally made by Demos, and the purpose of him creating it was for war. A war between the deities."

"At the end of the Third Epoch, the conflict between the deities had reached its peak, and then the earth collapsed, and the world almost became desolate. The Drakes could no longer control the situation and had no choice but to sacrifice half of their race’s lives to establish contact with Lord Yarra, who was beyond numerous spaces. Lord Yarra took pity on his own creation and therefore put down the world he was halfway building and hurried back to repair the broken world. He then set restrictions outside the world, preventing deities from freely entering the mortal world."

"In this War of Gods, almost all deities, apart from a few neutral ones, participated, and Demos was no exception. However, he was at a disadvantage in the war, and his church’s influence was continuously being diminished and devoured, and the faith belonging to him was constantly being snatched away. No one knew that he was actually a very visionary deity. Long before the Drake’s self-sacrifice, he had deduced the possible course of subsequent events, and he knew that if things went on this way, by the time the Fourth Epoch began, his church would eventually be completely destroyed."

"He wanted to save himself, but the deities in the same camp as him also had deep contradictions between each other, and he couldn’t entrust anything to any of his allies. Thus, he came up with a plan, targeting the actually fairly gentle-natured Caleto, or rather, the carefree and ambition-less Sea Race."

"So he created this Nightmare Spirit?" Vivian lifted her head from her notebook, stopped her pen and said, "To pull the Sea Race into the mire of war? No, to forcibly make the Sea Race into his ally?"

"You could say that." Catherine smiled sardonically and sighed, "Actually, the Sea Race has a weakness. When Caleto created them, he made their hearts of faith too devout, thus giving Demos this opportunity. To achieve Demos’ goal, the Nightmare and Fear Church held an extraordinarily large blood sacrifice ritual. During the ritual, twenty thousand fanatics surrounded the huge Sacrifice Array, using a knife to cut the flesh from their bodies, while continuously chanting prayers, until they were too weak from blood loss and pain to hurt themselves anymore. The Upper Rank priests helped to cut off the remaining flesh, and then killed these self-sacrificing fanatics."

"That’s brutal." The girls all showed expressions of discomfort.

"Ha, yes, it’s really brutal." The girls were just listening, but Catherine seemed to have witnessed the scene personally and said with a bitter smile, "But they were all volunteers, it’s really hard to understand."(To be continued.
