Chapter 489: Chapter 53 Shadow_1

The five individuals present were all taken aback. In the four thousand meter deep seabed, inside a shipwreck that had been silent for thousands of years, in a pitch-black environment, the bodies of the Undead floated all around, and even the surrounding seawater was suffused with the smell of rotting corpses. In such a space, suddenly seeing things moving from an unknown corner without any sign would be a distressing encounter for anybody.

Both Pannis and Catherine were startled too. Thankfully, Pannis had noticed the change in the surrounding water a second or two before the others, providing her with some mental preparation, but the others didn’t have this advantage until they heard Pannis’s voice and turned their attention to the suddenly appearing shadows.

Although Catherine was also unprepared, her trust in Pannis and the seamless cooperation they’d developed during their adventures allowed her to react before her brain registered it, raising her Magicsteel Shield to knock the three shadows aside.

In their alarmed state, the girls launched their most powerful attacks without holding back.

The girls were used to supporting each other. Simply looking at each other’s actions could tell them what tactics their teammates were about to use, without any need for verbal communication. The moment they spotted the shadows, Freya’s body flexed and darted like a dancer. Accompanying her movements, fist-sized metal puppets sprung from various parts of her body and rapidly closed in on the shadows. Over a hundred puppets filled the space around the shadows, blocking their sight. At the same time, Vivian stomped on the deck, activating one of the three support magic spells stored in her staff, creating a spherical space of energy that enveloped the three shadows and the surrounding seawater. The numerous small puppets also fell within this sphere.

This sphere was not merely a barrier of energy, but a twisted enclosed space. Visually, one could still see the targets, but in reality, they were sealed in a small space created by magic. Unless the Spellcaster could no longer support the enclosed space or the targets released enough energy to break the punier, they would remain completely isolated and unaffected by the outsides world. Upon ascending to Legendary Rank, Vivian’s concentration of mana made a substantial increase, evident at this moment. Previously, no matter how strong her casting abilities or her control over magic, due to the limitations of mana purity, she would exhaust all the mana in her body but still wouldn’t be able to conjure such a spell. Now, however, Vivian easily embedded the spell into her staff, unleashing it whenever necessary.

As soon as the locked space took effect, the miniature metal puppets that Freya released started to explode. The energy released by each puppet was of a different Elemental Energy. Over a hundred puppets placed at different nodes exploded in different orders, seemingly chaotic, but when the last puppet exploded, a collapsing inward vortex formed within the locked space, constantly absorbing magic energy around it. The source of the magic energy was, naturally, Vivian, who maintained the locked space. The true focus of the attack was not the locked space or the exploding micro puppets, but the condensation of Vivian’s magic energy, equivalent to her casting numerous attack spells on a single location simultaneously.

Even the most formidable Legendary Ranked professionals wouldn’t dare to face a large number of magic attacks at the same time from a mage like Vivian. What’s more, this was not just Vivian’s attack, but a joint strike by two Legendary Ranked professionals. The three struggling shadows trapped in the locked space found themselves in a dire situation, under constant bombardment by the inward vortex of energy that was inflicting damage on them. Their only choice was to hold up Aggression Shields to resist, they had no room to even unleash their energy to break free from the locked space.

Five seconds had passed since the two girls commenced their attack, and the concentration of energy turmoil stirring within the locked space was already high. Light and shadows strangely twisted every now and then and colorful rays of light flowed from the edges of the locked space, which began to oscillate increasingly unsteadily. Vivian furrowed her brows, looked into Catherine’s eyes, and with a light clap of her hands, the visible energy vortex paused momentarily and began to collapse inwards. The three struggling shadows were sucked by the collapsing force into the center of the vortex, where they suffered their last and most powerful blow, disintegrating into a puff of smoke, vanishing with the energy vortex within the locked space.

"Legion Barrier." Catherine, having been prepared for a long time, released her knight skill. After ascending to the Legendary Rank, there seemed to be no significant change to Catherine’s combat style as a knight, as if only her physical constitution had been greatly improved. This wasn’t the case, however. Catherine’s real improvement was in her defense capabilities, which had become a headache to all her enemies. As seen not long ago aboard the Floating Ship, even without a shield in hand she could still withstand a Demigod Rank attack. Every professional knew that a Demigod was an invincible existence at the pinnacle of all beings. Legendary Ranked individuals and Demigods were separated by only one level, but a Demigod could easily kill a Legendary Rank in the blink of an eye. Depending on the force of a Demigod’s body, they could quite possibly be stronger than a Legendary Rank physical professional. Therefore, withstanding an attack from a Demigod after the promotion demonstrated the extent of Catherine’s enhancement.

Certainly, her improvement was not only seen in defense. The strength and range of her skills saw a significant leap. When she deployed Legion Barrier, its range expanded more than five times from the original, with a faint glow indicating the skill’s coverage from all directions completely sealing off all water areas around the locked space, forming a defensive ring outside the locked space.

The locked space collapsed in the next moment, releasing the unbound energy turbulence that exploded in all directions. Calm seawater churned under the impact of energy, creating turbulent undercurrents that spread outward like a tsunami wave. If the undercurrents were allowed to explode unrestricted, the members of the adventure team nearby might not encounter any harm due to their shields, but this action would certainly destroy the shipwreck. The undercurrents could easily shred the already decayed shipwreck into pieces, eliminating all traces of it on the seabed.

However, when the raging undercurrents just began to spread, they crashed into Catherine’s Legion Barrier head-on. The impact, strong enough to destroy the entire shipwreck, could not budge the Legion Barrier in the slightest. The seawater inside the sealed area kept surging and clashing, gradually abating as the impact was slowly stands eradicated and then calmed down.

"What was that?" The girls finally calmed down at this point. Vivian, her face odd, asked, "Did any of you get a good look?"

"I don’t know." Freya shook her head: "I didn’t see clearly, it seemed...it seemed like just a few shadows."

"Just shadows." Pannis, who’d never seen anything like it before, scratched his head in confusion: "They looked humanoid, but their bodies were constantly twisting and shaking, as though their form was incredibly unstable."

"But that doesn’t make sense." Catherine spoke up: "It couldn’t have been shadows, remember I was able to collide and knock them away just now. If they really were shadows, in theory, I shouldn’t have been able to make contact with a solid entity at all."

"What did you feel when you collided with them?" Pannis asked: "Among us, only you have had indirect contact with them."

Catherine furrowed her brows, tapping her forehead in an attempt to recall the sensation at that moment: "It’s hard to describe, there was a feeling of impact, but it didn’t feel like flesh, it felt more like I crashed into some kind of gel-like substance. Yes, that’s it, jelly-like. Not just soft but also springy, do you remember when I knocked the three of them away? They were catapulted out."

"Could they have been some sort of controlled Sea Race?" Vivian asked with a hint of unease: "We made a direct heavy attack and killed them directly, even their corpses didn’t remain."

"I’ve never heard of such Sea Race." Pannis shook his head: "If they really were Sea Race, even though your attack was powerful, it shouldn’t have shattered their bodies entirely. So I lean more towards them being some sort of semi-physical...it’s difficult to call them creatures, something semi-physical I guess."

"Regardless of what they are, they must possess intelligence." Catherine stated: "I noticed, they can use Aggression, only intelligent creatures can use Aggression. This is an unbreakable rule, so they must be an intelligent species."

"I wish I knew sooner so I didn’t have to be so aggressive in my approach." Vivian sighed: "Maybe we could have asked them directly."

"No, your choice was the correct one." Pannis said: "They showed a strong hostility when they showed up. I don’t think we could have had a normal conversation with them. You guys felt it too didn’t you? The three shadowy figures were each of Legendary Rank, if we really had to fight them, the ship could be destroyed at any moment."

"Hey, you all." The ignored Isabella had been silent all the while and finally spoke up, now that their conversation wouldn’t interfere with the battle: "Until when do you plan to ignore me?"

"Uh, sorry, sorry." Pannis apologised: "I’m really sorry, we forgot about you."

"Hmph, you guys have been guessing left and right, but why not ask me?" Isabella pouted: "Offer me your souls, and I might just give you an answer out of amusement."
