Chapter 478: Chapter 43 The Great Whirlpool_1

"Look to your right." Lanna and Lamia still dragged the five members of the adventure team with their tails, travelling several kilometers beneath the seabed. As they swam, the two members of the Sea Race suddenly stopped, turned their heads to the right, and said, "Do you see the landscape there?"

To their right was a vast seafloor plain, barren of coral trees or seaweed, only a stark sandy plain. Nevertheless, despite the lack of phosphorescent algae, the plain was not completely dark. Scattered across its surface were countless twinkling points of light, giving the illusion of a star-studded sky beneath the dark sea.

The sandy plain covered about one or two square kilometers, lit up like a starry sky above which various tiny and extraordinary deep-sea fish of all colors lazily swam. In the largely dark sea world, this glittering "starry sky" was a beacon of hope for the marine life, luring smaller fish less than a meter long to gather in the area. Despite the lack of food, they were unwilling to leave.

"It’s really beautiful, is this the reflection of the night sky?" Freya clasped her hands over her chest, looking dreamily at the glittering plain, and murmured in a sleep-talking tone, "Beneath the dim night, the dark sky is studded with sparkling stars, a lonely girl dances alone in an empty theatre. No appreciation, no applause, but the girl keeps dancing tirelessly, just for a backwards glance from her beloved, just for..."

"There’s a fair amount of them now." Lamia abruptly interrupted Freya’s rambling, calmly addressing Lanna, "Let’s start."

The next instant, a sudden change occurred. Thousands of radiant stars abruptly turned into deadly weapons. From each point of light erupted over ten transparent threads about ten meters long and as slender as a small finger, each with a spiral horned drill head at the tip. Propelled by a force, they spiraled out through the water, covering almost all the space five meters above the one or two square kilometer seabed. The majority of the small fish didn’t even have a chance to struggle before being pierced into a net-like sieve. The mass death turned the surrounding sea into a bloody hue, and the girls could smell the scent of blood even hundreds of meters away. The transparent threads slowly retracted beneath the sand, and the pierced fish, lifeless, slowly sank to the seabed, dark blood oozing from the holes in their bodies.

"Are they... hunting?" The swift killing, from the sudden change to the mass deaths, spanning no more than two seconds, left the girls looking somewhat distressed. The intense shooting gave the prey no room to hide. They weren’t sure about the destructive power of each horned drill head, but considering it could pierce two deep-sea fish in a row, it was presumably not weak. They debated whether they could react in time to activate their shield if they entered this range unprepared.

"In the deep sea, the most attractive things are the most dangerous because they are traps set to attract prey." Lamia explained without any expression on her face, "But it’s fortunate that the damage done by these spewers is not very high and it’s unable to pierce the body of a Legendary Rank professional. If it were Gold Rank, there might have been some injuries."

Although a large massacre had occurred, the perpetrator remained silent, still glittering like a starry sky. The corpses of thousands of small fish piled on the sand, with no creature emerging from the sand to devour them.

"Now?" Catherine picked up on the hint in Lamia’s speech and asked in surprise, "Can their damage vary?"

"Yes, it can change; you will see it soon." Lamia spoke in a serious tone, "Spewers are not as simple as they seem. Their hunt is not over yet."

Serenity returned to the deep sea, as if nothing had happened. The sandy sea bottom still twinkled like a starry sky, yet no longer would anything dare to approach it due to its beauty. Calm was maintained for a while until Pannis suddenly twisted the corners of his mouth: "Here they come."

The sea currents around the seabed began to fluctuate, converging from all directions. Nearby middle-sized deep-sea fish and magical beasts were drawn by the bloody smell permeating the water, aggregating from all around. The attracted deep-sea fish weren’t small, with the smallest measuring five meters and the largest exceeding fifty meters. They had the unique and gruesome appearances typical of deep-sea magical beasts, looking extremely ferocious. Some were so strange that it was hard to believe they were creatures at all. These beasts quickly gathered around the accumulated bodies lying at the sea bottom and started to fight for food. Only a few seemingly smarter sea beasts managed to resist the temptation of food, hovering outside of the starlit area, watching and not joining the scuffle, and finally turned away and left.

And so, the hunt started once again, with the transparent silk threads and screw-like drill bits popping out from under the sand. However, this round was different from the last; there were noticeably fewer weapons launched this time, each thread was as thick as three fingers put together, and the keratinized cones were also the size of a human fist. These weapons were clearly launched faster than the last time, and their power had also markedly increased. Although the quantity was reduced, the prey was crowded around the pile of carcasses, which also reduced the area that needed to be covered. The launched silk threads managed to envelop all the prey once again, silent carnage unfolded. Seventeen to eighteen vicious sea beasts didn’t have a chance to fight back and were once again pierced into a sieve under the onslaught, regretfully losing their lives with their protruding eyes wide open.

This time, movements started from the seafloor; semi-transparent, jelly-like substances began to burrow up from the sandy seabed. Every lump of jelly was the size of an adult human, squatted on the sandy surface like a pile of muck, moving towards the mountain of corpses. Thousands of lumps of jelly spread flat on the sandy ground, looking like a nauseatingly sticky carpet. The girls couldn’t help but take a few steps back from the revolting sight, disgust showing clearly on their faces. When the jelly-like bodies got close to the pile of corpses, the large lumps of jelly suddenly separated, scattering into numerous head-sized jelly lumps. Tens of thousands of jelly lumps dove onto the pile of corpses, tightly wrapping them up, making the whole scene look like a large piece of amber.

"So that’s their actual size, right?" With the corner of her eyes twitching, Vivian asked, her voice raspy despite coming from her magic item: "They can freely change their body structure and combine at will?"

"Yes, they freely combine. Those are the spewers, a very dangerous kind of deep sea magical beast that lives in groups." Lanna made a gesture to get a grip, and along with Lamia, they resumed their journey with the others, not forgetting to look back and speak: "These magical beasts are very clever, sometimes, they even set traps for triple-layered hunting. Unless it’s some top-ranked deep sea magical beast, no unintelligent creature can escape. For intelligent creatures, unless you activate a shield, if you enter the second ring of their hunting area, even Legends would be seriously injured or even die. If you enter the third layer of their hunting range, the shield might not be strong enough and might get penetrated. However, they are also easy to deal with. Their hunting range will definitely have that sparkling plain from before, which is a scene they created with their companion organism. As long as you don’t step into that range, you can avoid their hunt. This is common knowledge we Sea Race folk all know. I’m worried that you don’t know, and you’d likely carelessly walk into it and encounter disaster."

"Thanks for the warning." Catherine, who was holding onto Lamia’s serpent tail, spoke loudly to the front: "Are there any more dangerous things we need to be aware of?"

"There are many dangerous places." Lamia looked back and spoke: "But if we’re talking about the most dangerous, it would be the Great Whirlpools."

The two Sea Race individuals swam very quickly, soon leaving behind the spewers’ hunting grounds. Before they knew it, they could no longer see the twinkling lights. Objects on the seabed rapidly vanished beneath them; the constant light from the phosphorescent algae even made a straight line at high speed. The marine life swimming towards them quickly moved aside at the reminder of the water currents, leaving a high-speed passage for the travelling girls. After about an hour of high-speed travel, Lamia came to a halt once again, pointing forward and saying, "Look, that’s one of the Great Whirlpools."

From where Lamia stopped, they could clearly sense the seawater’s flow. The space in front of them was completely dark, with no hint of light. The girls turned on their Crystal Energy lamps mounted on their backs, projecting a long pillar of light into what lay ahead. However, the seawater ahead was murky and they could only struggle to see through the chaotic currents and darkness. They could barely make out the distant seawater rapidly rotating.

"Great Whirlpools are difficult to observe with the naked eye and are often detected through the water’s current," Lanna said, "These whirlpools extend all the way to the ocean’s surface. While they mightn’t look large here, from the surface, they’re often several dozen kilometers wide."

"You should probably feel the inward suction at this point." Lamia noted, "As we delve deeper, the suction intensifies, to the point of being unable to control one’s position and starting to spin rapidly with the whirlpool. If you’re stuck around the periphery of the whirlpool, with a bit of luck, you may be able to escape using Aggression Burst or a counteracting magic spell. But if you’re too close, there’s no escaping. The whirlpool will suck you in tighter and tighter. The interior spins very fast, so if you’re sucked into the middle and your body isn’t sturdy enough, you would be torn to pieces in the blink of an eye. Those with sturdier bodies might last a bit longer, uhm, but not much longer. They’ll have just about enough time to be sucked into the deepest part of the whirlpool, before being completely swallowed up by the depths of the sea, I guess. Once the whirlpool pulls you beneath the seafloor, you can say goodbye to this world."

"Why?" Catherine inquired, "Where does it lead under the whirlpool? There are many powerful creatures in the sea, hasn’t any of them survived and returned?"

"Of course not, once you’re pulled in, there’s no coming back, death is the only outcome," Lamia casually responded, "Because what follows beneath is the Elemental Abyss." (To be continued.
