Chapter 471: Chapter 37 Storm God Temple_1

The stairs made of coral had a different feeling under bare feet. Small algae peeked out from the crevices of the coral steps, lightly rubbing the soles, causing an itch as one walked. Each step was quite high, but they were deep underwater, and even with the Amphibian Beads adjusting the environment, there was a slight buoyancy. With this perk, a gentle jump from the foot could make you float upwards onto the next step. The one hundred steps were quickly left underneath, arriving at the temple’s main entrance.

The temple had no main gate, the entrance was not obstructed and led directly to the inside of the temple. Looking in through the entrance, it was pitch black inside, nothing could be seen, completely different from the phosphorescent algae covering the outer walls of the temple which radiated light.

"Please come in." Seeing the girls hesitating at the temple entrance due to the pitch-dark interior, Doris, with a warm smile and a hint of mischief in her eyes, blinked and said: "You’ll understand once you go in."

Before the girls could say anything, Pannis had already stepped in front of them and strode into the main entrance of the temple. With someone taking the lead to reassure the girls, they no longer hesitated. Catherine nodded at the mischievous Doris, who was eagerly waiting for a show, and tentatively walked into the gate. There was nothing special about the space inside the gate, it was just pitch black. You could only feel the light shining from behind, but couldn’t see through the darkness ahead. You could only grope your way in the dark. After walking seven or eight steps forward in the darkness, Catherine suddenly felt a weight on her body, as if she had broken through a thin film. In the next moment, the light was restored, and she could hear sounds again, not artificial sounds, but the familiar babbling of water.

"What... what... what’s going on?" Catherine was somewhat unable to adapt to the weight of her body and subconsciously asked out loud. As she spoke, she further discovered that she could not only see light, hear sound, but could also smell and speak normally. Only then did she realize that she seemed to have exited the sea water and entered a dry environment.

Catherine looked down at her hands. They were no longer blurred as if through a layer of mist when submerged in water, but clearly seen. Then she looked at the ground by her feet, the sea water dripping from her body had wet the dry ground.

"Am I... really out of the seawater?" Catherine asked Pannis, who was standing with her arms folded and looking at her with amused eyes. Before Pannis could answer, the sound of water splashed behind her, and the other three girls appeared next to Catherine one after the other. From the people appearing behind, Catherine was able to figure out what had happened. It seemed that there was an invisible barrier in the corridor behind her that blocked the sea water outside, making the inside and outside of the barrier two completely different worlds.

"Be careful." Pannis seemed to know what would happen, he reached out as soon as Vivian walked in. As expected, as soon as Vivian entered the waterless space, she staggered and fell forward. Fortunately, Pannis reached out and supported her, stopping her from falling: "You’ve just left the water, you should re-adjust your strength control."

"Was this the reason for Doris’s mystery earlier?" Lina’s eyes flickered with curiosity as she touched the dry, coral reef-like wall and asked," What’s going on? Why is there suddenly a waterless space? This is the bottom of the sea. How much water pressure would need to be countered to create such a space?"

"Don’t forget, this is a temple, and it’s the main temple of Caleto, the deity of the ocean and storms." Pannis let go of Vivian, who was gradually adjusting, and he said in a low voice, "This place is an extension of the deity’s will, nothing is surprising."

"Including using divine power to counter the water pressure of the deep sea?" Catherine stared blankly at the scene before her. The temple in front of her was not much different from its counterparts on land. Crystal Energy lights were hung high on both sides of the enclosed corridor, the ocean flag representing the deity hung high on the vaulted ceiling, a faint fishy smell unique to the seaside lingered in the air, and faint sounds of hymns were coming from the depths of the corridor.

"You’re wrong." Doris, Lanna, and Lamia, without knowing when, stood right behind the girls. The others who were receiving them should have already returned from the other exits and entrances. The three members of the Sea Race wore dry priest robes, their exquisite feet bare on the ground, their wet hair draped over their shoulders. The three members of the Sea Race transformed into human forms and smiled at the girls with calm faces. Hearing Catherine’s words, Doris, like a girl next door, corrected her in a gentle tone, "Not exactly against the water pressure, the ocean is part of our God. Everything in the ocean is under our God’s control. So it’s not defying, but commanding. Our God orders the seawater to give way to the temple, not to enter the temple. Consequently, the water retreated from the temple and the inside of the temple became a dry space."

"But why?" Catherine, confused, asked further, "You are all from the Sea Race, right? There’s absolutely no need to create such a waterless space as a temple. It doesn’t make any sense."

"No, it is necessary, and very necessary." Doris did not further explain, but took everyone deeper into the hallway. Lanna, trailing behind, explained for her mother, "A significant proportion of the Sea Race have bodies larger than the temple itself, with some even larger than several temples combined. It is impossible to create a place for them to gather and worship. So it has been universally agreed that they should take on their terrestrial form to enter the temple. The terrestrial form is roughly the same size as humans, which prevents overcrowding or embarrassment due to inability to enter. However, another problem arises: the terrestrial form is not suitable for activity underwater. So we prayed to the Deity to designate the Temple District as a water-avoiding district, and thus all problems were solved."

"Oh, size issues really are troublesome," Catherine imagined a scene of several temple-sized sea beasts trying to squeeze into a temple and shook her head with a sigh. "I’m glad we don’t have to consider these issues. For us, this resolution is very suitable, otherwise, even with the Amphibian Beads, the underwater world would always be a troubling place."

As they traveled down the hallway and passed through a few archways, the girls were surprised to find themselves standing in a courtyard. There was no shelter overhead in the courtyard, and upon looking up they could see a dark dome made up of a vast amount of seawater. Above the dome, occasional luminescent fish leisurely swam by, as if they were meteors streaking across the night sky.

In the courtyard, many corals grew in a scattered fashion on the ground. The multicolored corals constantly changed hues under the light, reflecting a dreamy glow. Between the large coral clusters were stone tables and chairs, carved out of an unknown type of stone. They had a smooth and warm surface, making them very comfortable to sit on. Looking at these things before them, the girls could almost imagine coming to the courtyard after dinner, walking among the corals, or lying on the warm stone chairs gazing at the occasional lights passing above the dome. This scene gave the girls a bizarre feeling, akin to relaxation yet imbued with a certain indescribable loneliness.

"Come this way," Doris turned back and said, "I think you better take a bath first, get rid of all the salt from your bodies, and then change your clothes. It’s almost time for dinner. I have prepared a special underwater dinner for everyone. The formal reception outside the temple has been completed, so let’s consider dinner a small family feast held in honor of welcoming my daughter’s new friends."

Catherine initially wanted to refuse these courtesies and focus on understanding and completing the task at hand. But when she looked up at Doris, who was brimming with a hospitable and hopeful smile like a caring mother, she couldn’t help but feel softened and nodded subconsciously.

"Hey, enough is enough." Pannis suddenly coughed heavily, glancing sideways at an overly cheerful Doris, "Stop covertly using your charm talent on insignificant matters. Is it really necessary?"

"I don’t care, you have already agreed." Doris wore a face of joy from a plan well executed; her elegant demeanor tinged with mischief and energy making her look less like Lanna’s mother and more like her sister: "I don’t like this hurried habit of you humans. There’s no fun in that. Relax a little, spend the night in leisure, it won’t cause much harm."

"Well, thank you." Although her natural charm was disrupted, Catherine really couldn’t get angry over such a matter, so she just shook her head with a bitter smile. Even Lanna seemed embarrassed by her mother’s actions, awkwardly turning her head away.

"As I’ve told you before, the two shouldn’t be compared." Pannis sighed: "You live under the sea, where there’s no distinction between day and night, nor can you sense time passing, and with a long lifespan, the difference between a minute or a day to you is negligible. But for humans, each day is precious."

Doris blinked at the girls and said, "Follow me, I’ll take you to your rooms. Since you just arrived under the sea, it’s better for you to stay here for three days. Not only do you have to rest your bodies as I mentioned before, but you also need to get familiar with the underwater battle techniques and ways to communicate. Otherwise, it’s dangerous to enter a battle without preparation."

"Hey, don’t ignore me." Pannis irritably ruffled his hair as he said, "So, as I’ve been saying, your personality is just terrible." (To be continued.
