Chapter 452: Chapter 19 Unexpected Events on the Hot Springs Trip_2

"I, I, I think I saw an undead." The woman huddled in Catherine’s embrace and shivered. "I just finished soaking in the hot spring and was about to leave when I saw someone wearing local robes coming towards me. I didn’t pay it much attention at first, thinking it was just a local who came in for the hot spring, but after a few steps, I realized that he was wearing male robes. I was startled, and just as we were right in front of each other. When I looked up to ask him why he was in the women’s spring, I saw his face... His... His face was a skull, totally devoid of flesh. I was terrified, but before I could do anything, the figure suddenly disappeared from my sight. It was utterly dreadful, so dreadful."

"Don’t be afraid, there are many people around you, you’ll be okay," Catherine comforted the young woman like a child, stroking her hair. She then turned to Vivian and Freya, who had already dressed and walked out, and asked, "Did you two notice anything when you came out? Did anyone sneak in during the chaos like she described?"

"No," Vivian shook her head and pointed at Catherine, "Sis, your towel is falling off."

"Oh, thank you," Catherine quickly re-tied her towel and then pondered, "Technically it’s still daytime, and there’s no death energy nearby. Where could that skeleton have come from? And besides, skeletons are not ghosts, they shouldn’t be able to disappear instantly."

"Indeed, how strange."

"Huh?" Catherine and Lina stiffened as they slowly turned to see Mr. Pannis standing there with his arms folded across his chest, looking at the younger woman with a serious expression.

"What are you doing here?" Catherine asked, her mouth twitching, "Aren’t you supposed to be in another cave?"

"Oh, I heard the scream and rushed over," Mr. Pannis said, "I did not come in here to peep."

"No one accused you of peeping," Catherine rolled her eyes, "You said it was strange, what’s so strange?"

"Freya and Vivian didn’t see anyone run in," Mr. Pannis said, "But I didn’t see anyone run out either. There are no side paths here, anyone coming in or out would surely be noticed. Plus, most importantly, I was just a short distance ahead of her at the time. I saw everything clearly when she screamed. There was no one around her, nothing at all."

"But I genuinely saw it," the young woman shouted, "I am not lying, I really saw it, it couldn’t have been an illusion."

"But, ma’am, look up now," Mr. Pannis suggested, "Can you see my face?"

The young woman looked up, only to be met with dazzling sunlight. Bright light flooded into the cave from the entrance, making it impossible to see anything against the light. Not to mention a person in white robes, she couldn’t even see the silhouette of Mr. Pannis, who was wearing black.

"You see," Mr. Pannis commented, "Theoretically, you shouldn’t have been able to see clearly."

"But... but I really did see," the young woman wore a bewildered expression and stammered, "I swear it, I could see very clearly."

"The Wall of Memories," Maggie, who had quickly dressed and climbed out, said calmly, "She must have seen the Wall of Memories. This phenomenon often happens in this area within a few dozen kilometers. Whether it’s day or night, one might suddenly see scenes from the past, as realistic as anything. These scenes could be from tens of thousands of years ago, or as recent as yesterday. It may involve no one, or a group of people. So, don’t worry, it’s harmless. Locals even consider seeing such phantoms of memories as a kind of luck."

"Well, that would explain things," Mr. Pannis nodded in agreement, rubbing his chin, "That’s why the skeleton vanished so suddenly."

"But there are still three problems that can’t be explained," Catherine frowned, "First, have you ever seen a skeleton wearing clothes? I haven’t. If you say that the skeleton was a newly deceased person, and the clothes were what he wore before his death, but the body rotted away while the clothes remained. This lady could not have failed to notice the smell and the worn-out state of these clothes; she could not perceive him as a regular local."

"Yes, that is indeed suspicious," Mr. Pannis nodded, "It might be another intelligent undead."

"But that’s also impossible because it leads to the second problem: where did the undead come from? If this lady didn’t see wrongly, the skeleton was wearing the robes of the locals, which means this couldn’t have happened tens of thousands of years ago, it must have happened after the Fourth Epoch. But there’s no record of any death energy outbreak in this vicinity. Even the calamity of the Return of the Dead a hundred years ago didn’t affect here. So, the skeleton couldn’t have just popped up out of nowhere."

"Maybe we should search the area more thoroughly," Pannis suggested, "Maybe we can even find that skeleton. But alas, we don’t have the time."

"And there is the third problem," Catherine suddenly flashed a smile that made Mr. Pannis’s heart skip a beat, "Dear Mr. Pannis, you stated earlier that you rushed over after hearing the scream, not because you wanted to peep. But then I heard someone mention that he was just a short distance ahead at the time of the scream. Which one is the truth? Moreover, I just calculated that the ’short distance’ you referred to should also be inside the cave. Of course, it’s normal that this lady didn’t discover a person with such great stealth skills, but could you explain it to me? What was that ’certain person’ planning to do when he sneaked into the women’s hot spring cave?"

"Ha ha, ha ha, uh," Mr. Pannis began to sweat profusely, backing away in a panic, "Well, there must be a reason, hold on, a reason, yes, a reason. Let me think."

"Drop dead." Two pairs of fists, followed by a gust of wind, aimed for their chosen target.

"Actually, he was probably just being cautious, adopting a professional’s habit of guarding at the entrance of the cave, right?" Freya refrained from voicing her feelings and asked Vivian in a serious tone, "You guys should have figured that out, right?"

"Yes, we know," Vivian managed a smile, "That was just a routine interaction between two women who couldn’t express their feelings, and one idiot, to understand each other better and build a bond. Look, aren’t they all very happy? Oh, I misspoke, it’s not two, it’s three."

"Wait, you don’t mean you also..." Freya reached out in vain but failed to stop Vivian.

"Let me join, make way, Explosive Flame Spell." And so, smoke filled the cave. (To be continued. If you like this story, please vote and give monthly tickets on qidian.com. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile phone users please go to m.qidian.com to read.)
