Chapter 423: Chapter 49 - Wounded girls_1
The room where the altar was located presented a grim sight. Blessed by Divine Power, the room had not suffered structural damages, but both the floor and the ceiling were covered with large charred patches, occasionally covered with apparent unmeltable frost. The altar in the center of the room was intact, but there were dark red blood stains everywhere, it was not clear whose blood it was. The Undead Mage Zero lay in the middle of the altar with his body twisted, his eyes wide open, staring blankly at the ceiling. Blood kept oozing out of the hole in his chest, showing no signs of life. The bone staff he’d been holding was broken into three pieces, the skull at the end was missing, its magical radiance on the midsection completely vanished, which fell next to Zero’s corpse.
The victorious side appeared as equally devastated. Catherine’s newly replaced Falcon Shield was distorted and fragmented, looking as discarded as a crumpled piece of paper. The shield still bore the smell of burning, and her recently acquired one-handed sword hadn’t escaped fate either, shattering into several pieces scattered around it was hard to guess what it originally looked like. Half of the sturdy scale armor she wore was broken and fallen off. The scales scattered all over the floor like real fish scales, revealing the petticoat underneath the armor. Her left hand was charred-black, the scorched skin splitting open to reveal the fresh red flesh beneath, one could still smell the aroma of roasted meat up close. Her right foot, however, was frozen to pale white, the dead skin was still emitting gusts of cold air. It was feared that her right foot would shatter into pieces if bumped with force. On her face, three claw marks ran deeply from her forehead to her chin, the curling flesh made her look unutterably grotesque. But none of that was the most striking feature, it was her hair, the shorter strands in her mid-length black hair stood upright against the laws of physics, making her head look like a giant sea urchin.
Lina’s condition was slightly better, only her white priest robe had turned into a grey color, several patches of her silver hair were scorched, half of her right ear was torn off, her left arm was limp and hanging, twisted into a strange curve at several breaks. Her right calf had turned from its originally rounded and elastic beautiful curve into a flat piece of rotten flesh, though looking terrifying, none of the injuries were in any fatal locations. It was evident that Catherine had protected her well.
Marcia’s condition appeared even better, her sleeveless top left her arms uncovered, one could directly see that her arm’s skin was burst open from the inside leaving several wounds, clearly, this was the aftermath of using strength beyond what her limbs could bear. Her legs were also a bloody mess, although obscured by her trousers it could be assumed they were in the same condition as her arms. Marcia’s most astonishing wound, however, came from the bottom end of the undead mage’s bone staff, it had pierced through her from her sword’s front edge and came out from her back, running her right through along with her stomach. Yet even so, she remained conscious, blood occasionally dribbled down her mouth but seeing Pannis entering, she gave an excited smile and jolly said: "We won, tonight I want bone soup and golden olive braised smoked ham."
Pannis, with his experience, had no idea how to face her, he could only roll his eyes in feign ignorance and turned to look at Vivian. Vivian’s appearance from the outside was the best among all of them, apart from her blue work-style dress being a bit disheveled, and her hair being shorter from being burnt. There weren’t any obvious injuries. But she was the only one who, until now, had her eyes firmly shut, appearing to be in a coma, not even blinking her eyes. In fact, everyone’s mental state was not so good. Except Marcia, who was torn between whether to have golden olive ham or rabbit with line grass, both Lina and Catherine were lacking in energy. Catherine sat weakly against the corner, staring blankly into space without tending to her wounds. She was battle-wearied to the extent it felt as if she was ruminating on an unsolvable puzzle. Lina didn’t immediately tend to everyone. Their injuries, though severe, were not immediately life-threatening so the treatment could be put off for a while. Although Lina’s eyes were still lively, there was a worrisome presence about her, even her conversations appeared distanced. But even with their condition, they were conscious unlike Vivian, who seemed to have completely fallen unconscious.
"Indeed we won." Pannis lets out a sigh of relief, calmly asked, "hard to believe, four Gold Ranks fought head-on with a Legendary Rank Mage, and managed to win so easily. When Passion and you had killed that Legendary Rank..."
"There’s no comparison." Passion shook his head indifferently, "We utilized various traps, besides ambushes, it wasn’t really a direct confrontation. Besides, thieves and assassins are not made for face-to-face fights, comparing that with us is absurd."
"Alright alright." Pannis didn’t argue to that, he asked Lina, "What happened to Vivian? And what’s up with you and Catherine? Why haven’t you started treatment yet?"
"Leave her alone." Lina sighs, looking at Vivian enviously, "She said she saw a way to break through the wall, she’s looking for that path now. Catherine and I are not geniuses, so we can’t see clearly, we are still finding the path. As for the injuries, we are not going to die anytime soon, it can wait."
"They’re back too." Catherine blinked back from her trance, cautiously stood up, carefully making sure not to inadvertently shatter her frozen right foot, "Start treatment first, we both can figure it out slowly later, we have seen the other side of the wall already, how can we be afraid of not finding the path?"
"Alright then." Lina starts to prop up her body on the ground, no sooner than she had started to rise, she immediately collapsed back down, smiling bitterly, "It hurts all over, Catheria really knows how to give me trouble, she cast a spell on me before leaving, temporarily preventing me from suffering from fatigue, but its effects will burst out afterward, what a pain."
"Passion, just let Indulgence down." Pannis sighed as he walked over, helped Lina sit up, asked, "Who gets treatment first?"
"Of course, me first." Lina moaned as Pannis moved her, gritting her teeth as she percussed her flattened leg, "I remember in the Crying Cave, I also got flattened at the end, it really hurt."
"Ha, ha." Pannis forced a laugh, knowing he wasn’t entirely innocent in that affair, so he tried to change the subject. "How did you guys actually beat the Legendary Magician? Honestly, I expected you to stall until we could come to your rescue. I didn’t think you could solve it on your own."
"Because we underestimated the Alchemist, that’s why." Catherine hopped over on one leg and sat with the injured, waiting for treatment. She covered the grotesque tears in her flesh with a handkerchief, obscuring Pannis’s view. "After gulping down a dozen or so potions, it felt like there was an endless amount of energy inside me. Agility, strength, vitality, aggression capacity, everything increased to unimaginable heights. It was as if each movement could manipulate the energy around me. It’s an incredible experience."
Pannis exchanged glances with Indulgence and Passion, and chuckled subtly. "And then?"
"And then?" Catherine pondered, then gave a mischievous grin like a child. "That’s a secret. We likely cannot fight at full strength for half a month, but we won. Even if it is due to the potions, they are a part of our strength now. So we won, hahaha."
As a knight, the pursuit of victory and glory needs no justification. Catherine laughed heartily. The joy was contagious, and even Lina, who was starting the treatment procedures, couldn’t help but laugh along.
"And you guys?" While waiting for her turn to be treated, Catherine asked out of boredom. "Masters of Shadow Hand, what are you doing here instead of stealing gems in the Neutral Land?"
"We came only after stealing the gems." Despite the weakness, Indulgence couldn’t help but tease. "We knew you’ve returned the gem to the auction house, so we went and stole it back. The auction house is now in chaos because they lost it again. Don’t believe me? I can show you."
"Hey." Catherine eyed Indulgence warily as he reached into his backpack. "You’re not serious, are you?"
"Of course, I’m joking." Indulgence rolled his eyes and drew back his hand. "Who has the time to go steal stuff, when it’s not even a mission?"
"Speaking of stealing stuff, I just remembered something." Spotting Catherine getting teased, Pannis let out a cheeky laugh. He crept up behind Vivian, took a large parcel out of her massive backpack, and unwrapped it sneakily. In complete awe, he took out a frozen human leg from the parcel. Treasuring the touch of the firm and slender thigh, he announced. "Boy, are we lucky. We found this gorgeous leg at the temple exit. I don’t know whose it is, but the feel is just sensational. I think I’m going to take it home as a decorative piece."
Indulgence’s face turned beet red, so red it looked as if he might bleed. It was unbelievable, this man whose every action was provocative and who often woke up beside different men, would blush so fiercely. Flushed-faced Indulgence suddenly uplifted, aimlessly kicking Pannis in the gut and grabbing back his leg. Falling back to his original position, he hid the leg behind his back, and gritted his teeth at Pannis, saying, "You deserve to die, bastard."
"Help!" Pannis, sent flying with a kick, clutched his stomach and tumbled on the ground. After rolling for a while, he struggled to crawl back, moaning, "I think I’m gonna die. Help!"
"Oh." Looking at Pannis pityingly, Catherine sweetly said, "Even though I know why you did it, and I want to thank you, I don’t know why, I just can’t control myself. I must tell you that you had it coming."(To be continued. If you like this work, please vote for it on qidian.com. Your support is my biggest motivation. Mobile users can read it on m.qidian.com.)
