Chapter 417: Chapter 43 - Moving Between the Past and the Present_1
In an instant, the ladies all held their breath. The ancient temple fell into absolute silence. Not a single sound echoed through the dark corridor, except for the ladies’ somewhat rapid heartbeats ringing in their ears.
This was a peculiar temple, completely isolated from the outside world as there were no windows in any of the walls. The exterior light had no way of penetrating the interior. Yet, the temple did not succumb to darkness and was well-lit instead. At every three-meter interval on the top ends of the walls, a stone brick emanated light, lighting up the inside of the temple. No one understood why these bricks glowed; even to Vivian’s discerning eyes, these bricks seemed ordinary and theoretically incapable of emitting light. The only explanation concluded was the specialized technology of the First Epoch or the omnipotence of divine power.
In an ordinary building of this style, air inside would certainly be stale. Despite being enclosed, the air inside this temple was still fresh. It must be due to hidden Arrays for air purification or similar devices. Although the fluctuation of mana from these devices while working was undetectable, their existence was evident from the quality of the air.
The transmission of sound seemed particularly sensitive in this closed environment. Still, the ladies couldn’t hear the noises that Diana wanted them to hear. But there were sounds. Pannis’s ears twitched and he said, "The sound...it’s coming from below our feet. Huh, it looks like they’ve been playing hide and seek with the ghouls on their way and have now entered the main part of the temple."
"The underground part is the main section?" Catherine asked in surprise, "I’ve never heard of a temple where the basement is considered the main part. Isn’t that construed as disrespectful to the deity?"
"Hehe, for the present-day deities, even the one that Lina worships, Denia, it would indeed be considered disrespectful," Pannis shrugged and explained, "But for Danacus, the deity who reigns over death, the underground is where his essence resides. That’s why using it as the main part is regarded as normal."
"Shall we go down?" Diana didn’t make the decision herself, but asked Pannis, "It would be a bit trouble though if we were to go down. Even though I can hear the noises and smell the scents coming up, I can’t find where the stairs are."
"That’s fine" Pannis smiled wistfully, "I know, back in the day when we were in that temple, we thoroughly searched most parts of it. Things like stairs are easy to find. Follow me."
"Was the temple also empty of people, hiding countless treasures and secrets waiting to be discovered when you entered, like it is now?" Vivian, who was continually jotting down in her notebook, asked, "Is that how it was?"
"Easy? Hehe, hahaha." Pannis’s laughter was full of eerie mystery, "You wouldn’t want to know what we faced initially. It was by far the most terrifying of nightmares."
"Deities?" Catherine guessed tentatively, "I remember you mentioning there were bodies of deities in there."
"I’m sorry, I lied." Pannis twitched the corner of his mouth and muttered, shaking his head, "Not bodies of deities, but... bodies of deities that could move."
"I see, you guys also encountered undead back then huh. Was it skeletons or bone knights?" Since Pannis began to lead the way, Lina had been walking on her own again, as Diana dove back into the depths of Lina’s mind, allowing Lina to control her own body. "As expected, it’s the Temple of Danacus. There always seems to be some connection with the undead."
"Neither skeleton nor Bone Knight," Pannis didn’t answer directly but just shook his head and lightly sighed.
"This is the meditation room, where the priests meditate and introspect," Pannis casually introduced as he opened a door leading to a room - a dark room where no light emitted from the top part of the walls, "If this were the First Epoch, we might see four or five high-rank priests sitting quietly in this dark room. Of course, you won’t see that now."
In his memory, several clusters of destructive dark energy balls were launched towards them as the door opened. Seven dried corpses sitting silently in the room lifted their heads. There were no signs of life in them, they might be undead, but aside from their appearance, these dried corpses retained a significant number of living characteristics, making it hard to determine whether they were dead or alive. They all shared a unique feature- a deep socket in their foreheads with energy sparks dancing within.
Pannis closed his eyes, ignoring the memory of the sight and led everyone over to the other side of the room, pushing open another door and entering another corridor.
"If the functionality of the rooms is the same between the two temples, then this corridor leads to the conference room and confession room," Pannis continued to introduce, "The other side leads to the library, from where the closest stairwell leading down is."
"Library?" Lina and Vivian raised their eyebrows simultaneously and asked in unison, "Are you sure it’s a library?"
"We’ll find out when we see it," Pannis smiled, chose the left path, and moved ahead along the long corridor. Their steps resonated in the quiet hallway, clear and harsh.
In his memory, a giant three-eyed skull creature about two and a half meters tall emerged from a door that was ajar on the side of the corridor. The creature swung the intimidating long-handled battleaxe in its hand with enough force to cause a terrible whoosh in the corridor, while an aggressive semi-translucent energy blade whooshed past. The three-eyed skull creature was incredibly agile, balanced in its attack and defense, and very self-conscious. No matter how you look, it was a regular formidable enemy, not an undead creature.
"Hehe." Shuttling between memory and reality, Pannis chuckled softly, letting the three-eyed skull in his memory pass through his body, walk to the end of the corridor, and push open the two black doors. Beyond the doors was a gigantic room, row upon row of enormous bookshelves filling the room slowly, bookshelves five or six stories high reaching all the way to the ceiling, the sight was truly impressive.
"Right, a library." Pannis nodded his head, pointing at the bookshelves and saying, "But, it seems like it is quite a pity."
Vivian and Lina hung their heads in dejection, not uttering a word. Indeed, it was a pity - the colossal library was filled with bookshelves that were entirely empty, not only were there no books, there weren’t even any sheets of paper. Layers upon layers of vacant shelves were like wide-opened mouths, mockingly laughing at the two disappointed girls.
"Look, that’s the staircase." Pannis pointed ahead with his chin. In a corner of the library, a spiral staircase stretched downwards, "It seems we are fortunate, both temples are identical, it certainly saves a lot of trouble."
"This staircase, it’s made of wood? It hasn’t rotted, has it?" Catherine carefully pinched the handrail of the staircase, the handrail felt dry and solid, just like a new one. "How can it be? Could the temple be newly built? Look at the texture of this wood."
"No need to be so surprised, sis," Lina shook her head. "Don’t try to apply common sense to a temple that attracts the interest of a deity. If a deity wills it, they can make their temple appear new even after millions of years, with just a thought."
"And the technology of the gods of the First Epoch," Pannis added softly. But only he heard this.
Stepping onto the solid wooden staircase, Pannis glanced back at the first step. The light at the top of the walls shone down from high above, causing Pannis to involuntarily shield his eyes.
"Release, Holy Light." In his memory, the clear voice of a young girl echoed. The Light Winged Human trailing behind flapped her snowy white wings, hovering in mid-air, the dazzling light bursting from the girl’s hands made everyone who turned to look unable to help but shield their eyes. The sound of the girl’s pure laughter could be heard in their ears.
"Step, step, step." The five of them slowly descended the wooden staircase, the monotonous sound of footsteps creating echoes. The spiral staircase was very high; they walked nearly forty meters down before reaching solid ground. The underground space was also a sizable library, integrated with the floor above.
"This place is also a library," Pannis said, "But now we’re actually stepping into the main part of the temple."
"Should I ask Diana to continue tracking?" Lina still held deep resentment towards the fact that the library was devoid of any books, her voice revealing full-blown resentment.
"No need," Pannis shook his head. "Since they came down on their own, it means they’re not just playing hide and seek, they also have some specific objectives. And given they have specific objectives, their target could only be one - the Central Altar. Don’t worry, I know the way there."
"Who would ever come to this place without a special objective?" Catherine rolled her eyes and said, "Also, have you figured out who those people might be?"
"Probably, hehe," Pannis grinned foolishly, "If you let Vivian show me that leg again, perhaps I could be a bit more certain, hehe."
"Bug off," Catherine forcefully pushed Pannis back who was blocking the way, gritted her teeth and said, "Don’t think I don’t know what you’re planning. Hmph, now that you’ve recovered, you’ve started acting like this. If I’d known, I would have let you escape earlier."
"Hehe, it’s too late for all that now," Pannis laughed mischievously, "Now that you’ve taken me home, getting rid of me won’t be that easy. You’ll regret it."
"Really?" Catherine glanced at the one-handed sword at her waist, her face conveying both seriousness and amusement, "Since I’m going to regret later, should I now dispose of the cause of future regrets?"
"I was wrong, please forgive me," Pannis’s apology was always so timely and sincere.
"Stop messing around," Lina and Vivian who were already at the exit of the library called out, "We just heard faint shouts." (To be continued.
