Chapter 394: Chapter 20: Silver Wolf Pack_1
"Howl~~~" The Silver Wolves were very cautious. The stone wall was high, they could jump over it, but they would be entirely defenseless in the process. It was too easy to attack them mid-leap, so the clever Silver Wolves showed no signs of assault, just patiently waited outside the wall.
"What are they waiting for?" Catherine asked in confusion, "Isn’t delaying unfavorable for them? What if we have reinforcements?"
"They are just wolves." Pannis responded helplessly, "Don’t think of them as if they are humans who would consider reinforcements."
"They are probably waiting for a lapse in our defenses, waiting for us to expose a weakness." The campground commander was a highly experienced Bear Beastman. He thought a bit about Catherine’s question and answered, "With the situation as it is, they don’t stand a chance if they attack."
"Then what about us now?" Pannis asked, "Do you plan to keep holding them off like this?"
"No, if we keep holding off, we’ll be at a disadvantage." The commander shook his head, "Definitely no reinforcements will arrive soon, and if we let them take the initiative like this, we will eventually be worn out. We have to think of a way to take the initiative back and press them to attack us sooner rather than later."
"But they don’t seem to think the same." Pannis pointed at the tall grass beneath the wall in the distance, "They are hiding there, it seems they are not ready to give us a chance to regain control."
Pannis was right, the Silver Wolves were hiding in the bushes, dozens of meters away from the Warhammer Stronghold. It was hard for any long-range abilities to reach them. Both sides could only watch each other from dozens of meters away. The glowing green eyes of the wolf pack seemed to mock the Beastmen and humans’ helplessness. The commander’s face was not looking good, irate, he stared at the wolves beneath the wall, and wordlessly gestured for the guard behind him to hand him a bow and arrows.
"Let’s shoot down one, and see if they dare stay put." Holding the bow and arrows, the commander muttered menacingly, as he pulled the bow to its full draw, "No matter how clever they are, they are just beasts after all. I don’t think they can endure at a time like this, like humans can."
"Then, are you prepared?" Lina, or rather Diana, who had been silent till now, said from behind, "Are you prepared to face an enraged and insane pack of wolves and then be completely devoured by them?"
"What do you mean?" The commander abruptly turned around after letting go of the arrow, staring at Diana’s emotionless face, he said loudly, "Do you think we can’t defeat them?"
"It’s a shame that you’re a Beastman, that you’ve lived on the plains your whole life, haven’t you ever dealt with a Silver Wolf attack?" Diana’s eyes widened, with a hint of power in her gaze that made the commander helplessly take a step back. He held high status in Beastman army - he had seen his fair share of high-ranking individuals, but none of them were like Diana, with just one look she could put so much pressure on him. The pressure was like facing a strong and dignified king, more than just pressure, it was sheer terror.
The inexplicable fear made the Beastman commander both ashamed and angry, but his natural respect for the strong woman forced him to concede before Diana. He had no choice but to lower his head to a human woman, "I indeed have never dealt with a Silver Wolf attack, I don’t know what’s different about it?"
"Unlike other wolf packs, the Silver Wolf line is quite unique." Diana was satisfied with the commander’s reaction. She didn’t mock him any further, instead she patiently explained, "They care very much for their companions and can enter a bloodthirsty, crazed state due to a companion’s death. The more companions that die, the deeper they sink into this state. In this state, whether their attack power, defense power, speed, or strength, there will be a significant enhancement. The deeper the state, the greater the enhancement, and the stronger the remaining Silver Wolves become."
The commander said nothing, he seemed to have heard these rumors before, but since he had never witnessed it himself, he naturally put it out of mind. Now hearing Diana mention it, he was again reminded of the terrifying legends of the Silver Wolf packs. His clothes were soaked with cold sweat due to the fear, he asked respectfully, "Then, according to you, how should we deal with them?"
"Deal with them?" Diana sighed, and said helplessly, "You don’t even know what they are here to do, why are you thinking of dealing with them?"
"They...Aren’t they here to attack the stronghold though?" The commander felt a bit confused, he asked puzzledly, "Are there other motives?"
"Sigh." Diana felt even more helpless, rubbing her forehead she sighed, "Have you ever seen a wolf pack that would attack a human campsite just as night falls? Any wolf pack should attack in the middle of the night."
The commander’s face burned hot. He felt he could never look anyone in the eyes again feeling utmost embarrassment, scratching his head in a futile attempt to make himself feel at ease. Diana couldn’t bear to embarrass him further, seeing the mighty bearman before her flustered like a child. She lightly sighed and turned to Catherine and Pannis, remarking, "I’ll go take a look. You both wait here for my return."
Catherine, sounding worried, asked, "Are you... sure about going down alone? There are hundreds of Silver Wolves lurking below. What if... we should go with you instead."
Vivian, usually prone to daydreaming but this time unusually alert, had been quietly observing the situation unfold. Hearing of Diana’s plan to face the wolf pack alone, she too couldn’t help but offer her worried advice, "Even though we might not be able to provide much assistance, our mere presence could intimidate the Silver Wolves and prevent them from causing unnecessary chaos."
Diana laughed, a genuine, joyful laugh, gently patting Vivian and Catherine’s heads as she shook hers and replied, "There’s no need. We are alike. We are kin in the purest sense. Unless fighting for the throne, we would never bare our fangs at each other. There’s no need for you to worry about my well-being. The children down there are behaving strangely, I must go see what’s happening. If you were to go with me, it could alert the wolves and make them cautious. Just stay here and watch my performance."
Diana completed her remarks without waiting for Catherine and Vivian to reply. She gave Pannis a glance as if entrusting him with their safety, then turned around and leaped down. The commander, unable to understand Diana’s words, was alarmed at her sudden jump, but Pannis quickly reassured him, "Don’t worry. Our companion is skilled at communicating with wolves. She is down there to negotiate. Just remain patient for a while. Also, there’s no need to be so edgy. Everyone relax a bit. If we have to fight, we’ll do it after the negotiation. Keeping everybody on edge like this will only exhaust us when the time comes to battle."
Lina hopped off the city wall. Her silver hair and robe, under the dark sky, made her look like a Silver Wolf. She flashed across people’s vision a few times before disappearing into the tall grasses of the plains. The moment she entered the grass field, a hearty howl echoed and the calm grass field began stirring. The hundreds of Silver Wolves hiding in the grass move in response, growling under their breath.
The commander, despite being ridiculed by Lina, understood her criticisms were fair and were due to his shortcomings. He felt no resentments but was instead invested in this unfamiliar yet powerful stranger, inquiring anxiously, "Should we provide backup?"
Pannis didn’t have the mood to respond, just shaking his head dismissively. He fixed his tense gaze on the swaying grass field. His acute senses, which the Beastmen couldn’t magnify, enabled him to perceive everything clearly. Catherine and Vivian, equally nervous, grabbed at his robe hem on his right and left. Catherine’s palms were sweaty with fear, fearful that the Silver Wolves would suddenly attack Lina.
Pannis suddenly chuckled. His laughter seemed nonsensical to others but simultaneously made Catherine and Vivian loosen their grips and their tense expressions vanished. Catherine whispered, "What happened? Share something amusing with us."
Pannis mysteriously replied, chuckling, "Do you think we should let Lina know after Diana leaves? About the story of several Silver Wolves submissively licking her from head to toe?"
"Why can’t you understand how precious life is?" Catherine glared at Pannis while nursing a headache, "If you want to seek death, I won’t stop you. But arrange your funeral first. However, since you’ve suddenly become so carefree, does that mean everything’s under control there? Apart from the matter of the licking."
"Then it’s all under control." Pannis, concerned about his safety, reluctantly decided to... share this story with Lina after all. Yet, before he could assemble the story in his mind, the howling of wolves resonated from the grass field while the shape-shifting silver silhouette reappeared below the wall. Like a wolf, she sprang onto all four limbs and jumped straight back to the crowd.
They’re not here to invade the camp, after all.", Diana reported immediately. "The children are migrating, looking for new territories. Two days ago, they heard the howls of other Silver Wolves and followed them here accidentally. They originally didn’t plan to come this way, but your stronghold has scared off most of the large wildlife within a twenty-mile radius. They couldn’t find any prey nearby, so they came here to try their luck. If they had the opportunity, they would come in for a meal and retreat elsewhere for food if not. After all, it’s quite normal for them to be hungry for a day or two."
"Other Silver Wolves? Followed them here? " The commander asked dubiously, "But no other Silver Wolves were spotted around here?"
"Ha, ha, ha." The adventurers collectively looked up at the sky, feigning ignorance. They behaved as if they were just star-gazing.
"You don’t need to worry about this," Diana fabricated seriously. "That Silver Wolf has already left."
"Well, that’s a relief," the commander breathed easier. But immediately brought up another question, "But, I’ve never heard of wolves migrating in the spring."
"That’s exactly the problem," Diana answered with an odd expression. "The children’s home has been occupied. According to them, it’s occupied by a group of bones." (To be continued.
