Chapter 385: Chapter 11: Visitors on the Prairie_1

The unnamed valley in the afternoon had fallen into tranquility. The warm sunshine sprinkled through the sparse branches, leaving tiny spots of light on the carpet made of flower petals. The afternoon meal for the nine people had ended, only messy cups and dishes, and leftover snacks remained on the white cloth.

Catherine was sitting on the ground, leaning against a tree trunk, her long legs stretched out and crossed over each other. Her head drooped on her chest as she dozed, her long black hair covering her profile. Pink fruit flower petals were scattered across her hair and shoulders. From a distance, she seemed like a princess born amidst flowers in a fairy tale.

Vivian was curled up, also fast asleep. After all, they had rushed through the entire night, and the last few hours of sleep could barely make up for the fatigue. Vivian’s head was resting on Catherine’s thigh, the soft touch made her feel stable in her sleep.

A gentle breeze blew, making the silky silver hair behind a tree dance in the wind. It was Lina’s hair. Lina was sitting on the other side of the tree, not asleep, but as always reading a book. The rustling sound when turning the pages seemed to have a rhythmic allure, bringing a sense of tranquillity on an afternoon like this.

Freya, being trained as a lady for many years, insisted on maintaining her decorum and did not sleep directly on the ground. She was the only occupant in the tent, wrapped up in a sleeping bag, snoozing comfortably. Her round hand still held a branch of pink fruit tree which was picked not too long ago. The pink fruit flowers blooming on the branch filled the tent with a faintly sweet smell.

Pansy and Mimosa, the two sisters, stuck to their maid identity, initially intending to stay awake in case the masters needed anything. Still, the afternoon sun made them irresistibly drowsy and worn out, this drowsiness easily overcoming the will of the two young maids, they fell asleep, back against back with each other.

The most energetic of all were the sisters Michelle and Ansha. The exuberant energy unique to children made it hard for them to understand the concept of a nap. Even after rushing around the whole night, the twins still had energy in them. Having fed up playing around, the two were now sitting at the edge of the clearing feeding deer. Indeed, the wild animals, tormented by the cold and often starved in the winter, now revived under the spring warmth, beginning to emerge from their nests to look for food.

For herbivores, the valley with no predators was a paradise. There was no need to worry about being preyed upon or about food, except for the harsh winters, this place was their heaven. Animals living in such a secure environment did not fear humans. A few evidently underage deer showed no fear of these unfamiliar beings and instead congregated curiously near them. As the equally curious twin sisters reached out with tender wild vegetables on their palms, the gluttonous deer gave in entirely and threw caution to the wind. They leaned closer and began eating slowly from the girls’ palms. They even extended their wet tongues to lick the tender palms, releasing bursts of laughter from the two girls.

As for Mr. Pannis, he lay languidly like an old cat on a branch of the pink fruit tree, with his half-opened eyes, occasionally tossing up some snack or dry fruit accurately in his mouth, guarding the two girls playing with the animals below by relying on his acute hearing and sensing abilities.

On Mr. Pannis’s stomach, the slender and soft body of the little banshee, Annie, was lying comfortably. Though it was not understood why a ghost could eat and often liked to sleep, this didn’t prevent the little banshee from sleeping soundly. Unknowingly, half-materialized drool flowed out from the corner of her mouth and dropped onto Mr. Pannis’s clothes, and then evaporated instantly.

Blooming pink fruit flowers, beautiful ladies, docile animals, a tranquil world, and the indolent guardians, the scene was like a spread-out drawing brimming with the unique vitality of spring, warm and harmonious.

"Ha ha ha ha." A brazen laughter suddenly echoed from the pink fruit woods in the distance. Mr. Pannis, who was half-asleep, suddenly opened his eyes and frowned. He was aware of people in that direction, and not just there, there were quite a few tourists who had come in the past few hours. But everyone consciously maintained a distance. The picnickers were courteous enough to control their volume so as not to disturb others nearby, promoting a peaceful coexistence environment.

But a group of people arrived about twenty minutes ago. Their initial setting up was slightly louder, but nothing significant. However, once they had set up their area, they began to create a ruckus, spoiling the original tranquillity of the valley and making the surrounding visitors feel uneasy.

"Ha ha ha, cheers." The new neighbors seemed to have no control over their volume and were rudely making loud noises. The piercing laughter and loud conversations crinkled their brows: "Bro, you’ve found a great spot, it’s so much better than others, fewer people, feels just like our old home."

"Of course, I’ve lived in the City of Knowledge for over twenty years, I’m familiar with every nook and cranny. Assuredly, if there was more time, I could find even better places."

"This place is wonderful, indeed. But you all are peculiar, it’s just a simple outing for food and drinks, yet you have to give it a fancy name and pick the right spot. I don’t understand why you make things so complicated, all we needed was a place to sit and have a cheerful drink, that’s all."

"Exactly, we never quite understood them. But, enough about that, let’s have a drink."

A crisp sound of shattering porcelain echoed, jarringly loud in the serene valley, despite being over a hundred meters away. It seemed as if two people drinking had casually smashed their cups or wine jugs against the trees. This was followed by laughter and cheering from a few people.

On the open ground, a group of girls who were resting were awakened by the noise. Disgruntled, they shook themselves awake and sat back under the edge of the white canvas by the tree, their eyes still dazed as they looked at each other.

"So noisy." Lina closed her book and joined them, accepting the tea that Pansy passed her. "Who are these people, creating such a racket as soon as they arrive? Haven’t they been reminded of the custom of the Early Spring Festival?"

"I don’t know, they just arrived." Holding a banshee who, despite being startled awake, was reluctant to leave his arms, Pannis spoke to Freya. "Aren’t you from the Adventurers’ Guild? Isn’t this a place for you to manage? Didn’t you guys find this place?"

"Well, it’s not our private property, it’s a vacant valley." Freya helplessly replied. "Can we stop others from coming if they want to? But, Mr. Pannis, you finally talked to me. Have you been moved by my passion and sincerity, and accepted my love for you?"

"Woosh." Pannis let go of Annie and his words remained in the air as he himself had vanished in a flash. "I’ll go see who they are, you guys wait here."

"Pfft." Catherine covered her mouth and laughed. Shaking her head she sighed, "Freya, you really are either completely sincere or not at all. If not, why bother him? And if you are, why do you always scare him away?"

"Of course, I’m absolutely sincere." Freya held her chin up with clenched fists, her eyes gleaming. "I will never forget that scene. You were sent flying by an armored bull and he stood in the middle of your path with a raised fist. Even when faced with a magical beast as heavy as a siege hammer, he didn’t step back. Such a reliable teammate, such a reliable man, is what every woman aspires and yearns for. Just by that one move, he captivated me. In that moment, his fearless and resolute demeanor melted my heart..."

"Bam." Vivian’s magic staff hit Freya’s head once again.

"Hey, I didn’t say anything this time. Why did you hit me again?" Freya complained, looking innocent.

"Oh, sorry, I’ve just gotten used to it." Vivian put away her magic staff with a blank expression and an insincere apology. "I’ll be more careful next time. I’ll only hit you when necessary."

The girls suddenly fell into a cryptic silence. They sat in the same pose, elbows on knees, hands supporting their chins. No one knew what they were thinking, and a strange atmosphere quietly brewed during the silence.

"Whimper, they went away." Alarmed by the distant noisy crowd, the deer gave the twin girls a regretful lick on the cheek and disappeared into the woods. The persistent girls waited in vain for a while before returning to Lina with a disappointed expression, breaking the strange silence. "We wanted to take them home."

"They went home, to their own home." The girls woke from their musings. Lina patted the sisters’ heads and comforted them, "Their home is here, just like ours is in the Holy City. You wouldn’t like it if someone took you away, would you? Don’t be sad. If you miss them, I can bring you here to see them next time."

"Yeah." The naive girls nodded earnestly. "You must bring us next time."

As they were talking, the noise from a distance suddenly intensified, as if an argument had broken out. However, within a minute, a powerful aura abruptly silenced all the noise.

"Whish, whish." Not long after, the tree branches above them rustled gently, and flower petals fell like rain, covering the girls in petals. The girls looked up to see Pannis’s face emerging from the flowers. "It’s a group of Beastmen. They were taught a lesson by a legendary warrior who was admiring the flowers. They’ve calmed down now."(To be continued. If you like this novel, please visit qidian.com to recommend or vote for it. Your support is my greatest motivation.
