"Ouch, ouch." Moaned Pannis, sprawled on the plush carpet of the mansion on No. 6 Fox Street, clutching his waist, "I’m in pain. You’re literally killing me."
"Serves you right." Catherine retorted, glaring at Pannis with a threatening expression. "That’s what you get for sneaking into a lady’s room."
"I’m innocent." Defended Pannis, aggrieved. "Vivian told me you were looking for me. If I knew you’d be hiding in the room... Sorry, I was wrong. I won’t do it again."
"Hmph." Satisfied, Catherine withdrew her fierce gaze and turned furiously towards Vivian at the side of the table. "Vivian, come here. We need to talk. Have you been up all night again? It’s your first night back, and already you’re not sleeping. Are you thinking your body can handle it? Just a few days ago, you were complaining of headaches, yet you dare to do this at night. Do you have a lot of vitality left? You’re the scholar here; you should know better that sleep is the best way to restore vitality. Drinking potions won’t solve the problem if you can’t sleep normally. Look at you..."
With a snap, Vivian forcefully closed the book she was reading, walked over calmly, and sat down in an armchair with a serious expression. "Sister, Pannis, come with me tonight."
"Huh?" Startled by Vivian’s unexpected seriousness, Catherine nodded instinctively, "Oh, okay."
"Great." With a nod of satisfaction, Vivian suddenly tilted her head, her body going limp like a marionette severed from its strings, slumping into the armchair and not moving at all.
"Hey, don’t scare me." Both Catherine and Pannis rushed over to support her. After a frantic check, Catherine playfully tapped Vivian’s head. "You can’t use your illness to run from our conversation. And you, idiot, should sleep in your own room instead of making me carry you there. Can’t get lazier than this."
Vivian smiled cunningly, raised her eyebrows playfully, closed her eyes and pretended to be dead. An infuriated Catherine pinched her nose and warned, "This time I’ll let it slide, but next time, no more all-nighters. I’ll watch you sleep every night."
"What a dreadful threat." Seeing Catherine gently cradling Vivian preparing to go upstairs, Pannis, who had been pretending to be a corpse on the floor all this while finally got up, moved to his usual chair and grumbling, "For her, being denied staying up all night is a dreadful punishment second only to not being allowed to do experiments. How vindictive."
"Master Pannis, here is your tea." The two maids were easily adjusting to their roles. Perhaps, being maids was their usual daily tasks indeed. Seeing Pannis sit down, Pansy promptly came over with a tea set and poured him a cup of tea. "The mistresses care about each other so much, always concerned and worried about each other. Although I don’t quite understand, I do admire this kind of bond. Is this what the outside world is like between people?"
"Aren’t things between the two of you just the same?" Pannis picked up his teacup and took a sip, heaping high praise before continuing. "But then, the world outside isn’t as beautiful. After all, there are bad people everywhere."
"Like you, sir?" asked Mimosa, seemingly innocent.
"What kind of question is that?" Pannis protested, "I am an upright and serious person. I never do bad things. I couldn’t possibly be a bad person."
Mimosa swiftly whipped out a dagger from thin air, stabbing downward toward Pannis’ hands, which had been sneakily inching towards her thigh. Pannis quickly withdrew his hand. "I don’t know why, but I just find it hard to believe what you said, Master."
"Hey, don’t suddenly brandish a weapon." Pannis rubbed his arm in fright, forcing a smile. "It can be dangerous."
"Good job." Catherine, who had just returned from upstairs, saw the scene unfold and praised. "The two of you have grasped the essence of surviving in this mansion. Yep, that’s exactly how you should handle him when he starts to get abnormal."
"Catherine, we’re supposed to be on the same team", Pannis complained. "Your words hurt me."
"Lucky me." Catherine picked up a throw pillow from the chair and tossed it at Pannis. "Time to get serious. Are you free later? If yes, then come with me."
"Um, I am free," Pannis nodded. "Where are we going?"
"Money Exchange. " Catherine rolled her eyes, saying reluctantly, "We’re to exchange the gold coins for Magiciron. The earnings from this trip will be way more than what we’ve gotten in previous years. Everyone will get a big share. I bet Lina and Vivian are looking forward to it."
"Ha ha. I think the people most looking forward to it are likely not them." Pannis chuckled dryly.
"What did you say?" Catherine’s gaze turned dangerous again, "I didn’t catch that, could you please say it again?"
"Ahem, I said it’s not a problem, I’ll definitely go with you to exchange the currency." Pannis lifted his chest and head, speaking resolutely, "And as for them, they couldn’t wait to split the money."
"Hmph hmph." Catherine pretended to be reserved, with two light nasal laughs. Eventually, she couldn’t hold back her joy and gleefully said, "Now just with the reward, each person can get about 140,000 gold coins, and there will be a large sum of money coming in later, hahaha, I’m so happy."
"So much..." Pannis, holding a teacup and stroking his chin, said, "I remember, the reward for the Life Force Potion we broke back then was only 100,000 gold coins, right? So that means, this income not only can settle my debts, but there’ll be quite a surplus left."
"Indeed that’s the case." Catherine’s eyes flickered, looking at Pannis with a meaningful gaze, "How about it? Are you planning to leave after paying off that debt?"
"Uh, uh." Even with Pannis’s mental endurance, he was unnerved by Catherine’s enigmatic gaze and his eyes dodged, saying, "I don’t have that plan, I was just thinking, hahaha, just thinking."
"I’ve decided." Catherine slapped the table, pointing at Pannis, "Considering your previous bad habits, I’ve decided that this money should be kept by the three of us on your behalf. It must not be handed over to you. Otherwise, I believe that in less than a month, not a single coin will be left."
"How could you do this?" Pannis cried out in desperation, "This is not fair! Aren’t you a knight? Don’t you value fairness and justice? How could you violate the principles of fairness."
"Hmph hmph, no objections." Catherine stood up, crossing her arms like a queen, and looked down on Pannis, "That’s decided then. When you really need the money, we’ll give it to you. From now on, any large income that exceeds 10,000 gold coins will be handled this way. Hmm, I’m sure Vivian and Lina will also agree with my decision."
"God, why did my world suddenly become dark?" Pannis looked up at the sky with a stupefied gaze, stretching out his hand in despair, "Fine wine...great food...beautiful women...my only hope...I...I see...the end."
"Quit your nonsense." Catherine couldn’t help but laugh, "Anyway, if you’re not planning to leave, you won’t need that much money. Even if we gave you money, you wouldn’t be using it for anything productive. Don’t act as if you’re about to die."
"Fine then." Pannis lifted his teacup grievously and drained it in one gulp as if venting his dissatisfaction, only to end up with his mouth scalded by the hot tea and wincing in pain.
"You two sisters, Passion and Indulgence brought you here several days ago." Catherine did not pay any attention to the exaggerated suffering of Pannis, and turned her head to ask Pansy and Mimosa, "So, how are you getting along these days?"
"Actually...we haven’t left the house for these few days." Unlike with Pannis, the two sisters treated Catherine with a heartfelt gratitude and respect, "We’re a bit scared. We don’t dare to let people see us."
"Hmm, I understand your fear." Catherine was very caring towards these two fourteen- and fifteen-year-old sisters, soothing them, "But it’s okay, we’re all at home during this period. Every time we go out, we will take you along. You can try to interact with others in the same way we do, and if there’s anything you don’t understand, just follow suit and ask us later. We’ll explain everything to you."
"Thank you so much, Mistress Catherine." Both the maids curtsied gratefully, "Passion and Indulgence were right, you really are the most dependable person."
"The day when you no longer see us as your dependents and can face everything on your own is the day truly worth rejoicing." Catherine said with a soft smile, "And, when you no longer call me Mistress Catherine and start calling me Sister Catherine, that will be the day you have fully shrugged off the shadow of the City of Innocence."
"Yes, we will work hard." Pansy and Mimosa showed authentic smiles for the first time, nodding firmly, "We will definitely be able to live as normal people from the outside world."
"But I do have one thing to remind you of." Catherine’s soft expression suddenly turned serious, "You must keep this advice in mind."
"Yes." The hearts of the maid sisters skipped a beat.
"When you imitate our way of interacting with other people, never, ever imitate Pannis’s behavior." Catherine pointed to Pannis who was aimlessly spinning his teacup, "That’s a taboo. Never touch it, or else you will regret it for the rest of your lives."
"Hey, would you quit attacking innocent people?" Pannis rolled his eyes helplessly, "Am I guilty for playing with a teacup?"
