Chapter 308: Chapter 20 Evergreen Hotel_1

The Evergreen Hotel is located in the central part of the hotel district in the City of Innocence. It is a three-story building with sides up to 150 meters long and a height of about ten meters. On the Yarran Continent, apart from the Mages’ Magic Tower, buildings are usually no more than ten meters high. Any taller would compromise both stability and comfort, making it more trouble than it’s worth.

The Evergreen Hotel seems quite ordinary. It’s neither like the castle hotel we just passed with its ancient castle aesthetic, nor is it as ostentatiously luxurious as the Golden Apple Hotel mentioned by Swin. Neither does it emulate the Summer Hotel where all the staff are top-notch beauties. However, the Evergreen Hotel meets Catherine’s requirements of being safe and quiet.

The two large organizations controlling the hotel district each occupy half the territory. Under normal circumstances, these organizations would ruthlessly fight each other until one is left standing. But, oddly enough, no conflict has occurred between these two organizations in the past thirty years. Even after three decades of contact, members of each organization no longer regard each other as mortal enemies.

The leaders of both organizations are intelligent. They know their strengths are equal, and any war between them would result in a protracted War of Attrition, gradually weakening both organizations until they are vulnerable to outside attacks. So, they stopped attacking each other and took a united front against external forces, gradually infiltrating the surrounding areas. Outsiders have attempted many times to provoke a war between them, but no matter what, they refuse to fight. Even when one side encounters difficulties, the other not only refrains from attacking, but offers assistance. This incredible behavior has left their enemies helpless, resorting to more direct methods to curb their territorial expansion.

Therefore, the Evergreen Hotel, located in the heart of the hotel district, is among the safest hotels in the area. Due to its central location, it’s far from the men’s quarters in the Tenth District, the competition zone in the Twelfth District, and also distanced from the gambling area in the Fifteenth District. Without disturbance from these lively districts, the Evergreen Hotel is as quiet as if it’s in another world, making it hard for people to believe it’s located in the notoriously lawless City of Innocence.

The Evergreen Hotel is surrounded by pine trees, providing a tranquil environment throughout the seasons. The hotel appears hidden within the pine forest.

The carriage slowly stopped in front of the hotel where a couple of young maidens from the group of servi-girls stationed by the entrance stepped forward. The servi-girls weren’t extraordinarily beautiful, but their youthful vitality and professionalism were appealing. Their footsteps and gazes betrayed something different from typical high-end hotel servants.

"These girls are not ordinary," Catherine remarked to Swin, who was about to open the carriage door for her, "They’re fighters, aren’t they?"

"In the City of Innocence, everyone’s a fighter," replied Swin matter-of-factly, "Non-combatants, unless they have a particular skill set protected by an organization, would find it hard to survive even a month. Don’t be fooled by their appearances. They probably have a kill or two under their belts. But don’t worry, once you’re checked in, they’ll be your best defenders. Anyone wishing to harm you within the hotel will have to step over their dead bodies."

Catherine shook her head and let out an almost imperceptible sigh. Two of the younger servi-girls had jogged to the carriage door, eager to help with the luggage, only to find there was none to carry.

"Sorry, we’re adventurers. We’re used to carrying our stuff," Since their destination was a city rather than the wilderness, Catherine and Vivian didn’t carry much. Their expandable backpacks were enough to carry all their belongings, negating the need for additional luggage. Vivian handed the girls a gold coin under Catherine’s distressed gaze, "This place looks nice. Show us around and if everything is satisfactory, we’ll stay here."

The tip, as per Catherine’s suggestion, however, couldn’t be reimbursed by the Shadow Hand, so she couldn’t bear to part with the gold coin herself, and thus delegated the task to Vivian.

The two servi-girls accepted the gold coin with professional restraint; their joy was not excessive. Their professional smiles led the way into the hotel.

The architecture of the Evergreen Hotel is quite unique. Despite the exterior’s square appearance, the interior is quite different. The entrance leads into a massive foyer where all check-in procedures are done. From the foyer, a square promenade extends to either side. One side of the promenade consists of guest rooms, each with its window facing the outside, allowing sunlight to fill the rooms. The other side of the promenade opens to a square courtyard, featuring a quaint artificial lake. Umbrellas and tea tables scattered around the lake offer a place for guests to relax and enjoy nature during balmy weather.

"Let’s settle here," Catherine nodded in satisfaction. The environment reminded her of her own mansion, giving her a sense of home, "Mr. Swin, please take care of the check-in process for us. Afterward, could you run to the Shadow Hand and leave a message for Passion and Indulgence that we’re here and they can come over anytime. By the way, under these circumstances, do we settle the bill before getting reimbursed by the Shadow Hand, or do you settle directly with them?"

"Since you have an invitation from the Shadow Hand Guild, you don’t need to worry about the finances. Just sign the documents." Swin replied, "We will directly settle with the Shadow Hand. All your daily expenses here such as accommodation, transportation, and meals are all included. As long as you tell the shop owner that the Shadow hand will be responsible and sign the documents, you won’t have to worry about it anymore."

"Well, that’s convenient." Catherine nodded with a smile. "Thank you for your trouble."

"Oh, right." Swin took out two peculiarly shaped camel beast brooches, handing them to Catherine, "This is my emblem. As long as you two miss carry this insignia, you basically don’t have to worry about being harassed on the main roads and inside large street blocks. Just be careful of some scattered unorganized thieves. Besides, this emblem is also for my Resonance Crystal. Whenever you need to find me, just activate it."

"Thank you." Catherine took the brooch, gave one to Vivian, and pinned it on her chest, "We leave the rest to you."

After Swin turned and left for the front hall workbench to handle various procedures, Catherine showed a kind smile to the two maids beside her, "Do you two have free time? I would like to ask you a few things if I’m allowed."

"No problem." Evidently seasoned by the curiosity of customers visiting the City of Innocence for the first time, the long-haired maid smiled and nodded," Responding to guests’ questions is part of our duty. You can ask us anything. During your stay, we will be exclusively at your service. If you wish, we can accompany you anywhere. We will answer all of your questions and meet all your needs that conform to city rules. We can also handle issues that Mr. Swin may not be able to handle properly. This is a perk our Evergreen Hotel provides for guests."

"All needs?" Catherine paused, pondering, "Any needs?"

"Uh." The two professional maids showed a strange expression, the short-haired maid’s smile somewhat stiff, "Except very few special needs, if you have ’thosetypes’ of special requests, I can recommend you other maids who can fulfill all your requests."

"Ah, you misunderstood." Catherine’s mouth twitched awkwardly, she said half-amused and half-annoyed "We don’t have any strange requests. Your hotel has a restaurant, right? We traveled a long way and are somewhat hungry, let’s have a more detailed talk in the restaurant."

"Please follow me, a dedicated person will deliver your check-in documents to the restaurant and ask for your signature."

Fully circumventing the corridor, the hotel’s structure is symmetrical, meaning that the back of the hotel is a large space similar to the front hall. This is the hotel’s restaurant, although the chefs here might not be as skilled as some luxurious restaurants outside, but within the City of Innocence, they are considered above average.

"If you want to taste gourmet food, you need to go to the Fourteenth District, where there are the world’s top delicacies and wines." The long-haired maid introduced after Vivian and Catherine sat down, "But it’s somewhat chaotic there. If you don’t have enough bodyguards, you might run into trouble. However, if you carry the emblem of the Camel Beast Group, and have a hotel maid accompanying you, generally you won’t have any problems."

"You two should sit down too. It’s inconvenient to ask questions standing up." Catherine said, "Don’t worry about breaking any rules, this time is an exception."

"Thank you, misses." The two maids bent forward to sit at the edge of the chair, silently waiting for Catherine’s questions.

"I have one big question." Catherine crossed her arms, her fingers lightly tapping her cheek as she asked, "People always say the City of Innocence is the most chaotic city in the Yarran World, a completely disordered world. But, what I’ve seen today contradicts my imagination. Despite the absence of laws, despite the two murders I saw along the way, it feels like the city operates quite normally overall. Why is that?
