Chapter 276: Chapter 42 I want to return to the team _1
"It seems like they have been using this place as their base lately, causing us trouble non-stop." Leaving the well-informed merchant, Catherine slowly let go of the chill-inducing smile on her face, "But I’m skeptical, have they really not left yet?"
"Who knows?" Pannis shrugged, "No one recognizes them once they’ve taken off their masks, it’s hard to tell whether they’ve blended in with the gang of thieves. However, I think they probably haven’t left."
"Why’s that?" Lina, her mouth full of a sugar-frosted red pearl fruit, mumbled, "There must be a reason, right?"
"Once they leave here, they’ll find it hard to locate a similar place to establish as their base," Pannis explained, "Unless they abandon attacking us, or they are willing to wander the wilderness like the wretched thieves, there’s no need for them to leave this place."
"Don’t forget what we discussed before, there’s a good chance that they’re mercenaries." Vivian argued, "Mercenaries are used to living in harsh conditions for a long period of time, so they could totally survive in the wilderness."
"But being able and being accustomed are two different things." For once, Catherine agreed with Pannis, "Just as we could, under harsh conditions, sustain ourselves on dried meat and hardtack, I’d assume that none of you would like to, unless there’s no other choice. It’s the same principle, they wouldn’t voluntarily endure the hardships of the wilderness when there’s no risk involved."
"Alright, I admit, your points are valid." Vivian nodded in agreement. Their discussion style was always the same. One of them voiced an opinion or suggestion, while others would deliberately think from a counter perspective, seeking potential flaws. They’d then debate over these issues, persuading each other, striving to make the idea more robust and accurate.
"I’d like to object here," Lina, however, was not totally convinced, "I don’t know about others, but if that fox appeared in front of me, even without the mask, I’d have a fifty percent chance of recognizing him. As for the bunny, Vivian should be able to distinguish her easily."
"They’ve already made their exit, they have absolutely no need to stick around here." Pannis refuted, "In other words, it’s very likely that they’ve made their exit and left while the others remain."
"Agreed." "Agreed."
"I agree too." Lina twisted her long hair, "But even if we know they’re still hiding around here, it doesn’t mean anything. We don’t know who they are and undoubtedly they don’t dare to make a move here."
"Anyway, there’s no harm in being cautious." Catherine spoke, "Just observe a bit more."
"Alright, observe, observe." Lina muttered while walking, "Sis, do we need to buy anything?"
"Of course not." Catherine responded grumpily, "There’s a long way to travel, and they only sell goods in bulk here, how can we transport them back if we buy them?"
"Well, you never know, maybe..." By this point, Lina wasn’t debating anymore but rather engaging in playful banter out of boredom. Suddenly, she paused mid-sentence, taking a closer look, then tugged on Pannis’ clothes, "Hey, look at that person over there, am I seeing right?"
"Who?" Pannis followed Lina’s gaze and was taken aback, "Hmm, you’re not wrong, it’s her."
"This is the first time I’ve realized that perhaps every choice we make can alter one’s destiny." Lina contemplated the subject of her gaze, "Maybe if we hadn’t let her follow us back then, she probably would have gotten married and had kids in a year or two, leading an ordinary life."
"An ordinary life isn’t necessarily a bad thing." Pannis stated nonchalantly, "At least you can live a peaceful life without worrying about being devoured by a magical beast every day, or guessing where your corpse will be before deteriorating to the point of white bones, whether it will be found or buried."
"Even if the mortality rate is high, at least she fought and had her glorious moments. I suppose that’s priceless to her. Let’s go say hi." Lina pulled Catherine and Vivian towards the woman she had spotted. She was a very average-looking woman with an ordinary figure, judging from the number, attire, and prowess of her companions, she must be an adventurer from a lower-rank adventurer team. They hung around a small-scale caravan, and presumably were separately hired by this caravan from the City of Knowledge to provide protection along the way. The female adventurer had been facing sideways, completely oblivious to Lina and her party’s approach until she spotted their vague reflections in her companion’s eyes.
"Hey, Lydia." On the short walk over, Lina transitioned effortlessly from a spoiled prankster queen to a serene saintly girl, addressing the female adventurer in a calm and gentle tone, "It’s been a few months, we’re glad to see you’re doing well."
"Is it the High Priestess?" Lydia was stunned, as if thrown back to a few months ago when they fought together in Angus Village. With one hand pounding her chest like a city guard, she exclaimed, "I’m really glad too."
"You’re not in the city guard anymore, no need to be so serious." Lina smiled tenderly, gently patting Lydia’s shoulder, "Besides, didn’t I tell you before? I merely lent a hand, I’m just a priest, not a High Priestess. Why can’t you get that?"
"No, in my eyes, you’ll always be the High Priestess who saved my life." Lydia earnestly said, "Regardless of how our statuses change, this fact won’t."
"You haven’t changed a bit." Lina chuckled in resignation, "Though, I’m relieved to see you’ve finally embarked on the path of being an adventurer. It seems like that battle has alleviated your confusion and helped you find your life’s direction."
"Yes, my lord." Lydia said firmly: "I can no longer bear the monotony of the past. I want to live a life as meaningful as both of you, even if it costs me my life."
"I support your resolve." Lina smiled and nodded: "I hope everything goes well for you, and that you have the most extraordinary and brilliant life. Since you’ve chosen to be an adventurer, and you’re from around here, you should set up your headquarters in the City of Knowledge."
"Yes, but we don’t have a headquarters yet." Lydia spoke a bit shyly: "Our team is just getting started, and we don’t have enough funds to lease a building near the Holy City as our permanent base, so we can only rent an inn when we need to. But we’ve completed four tasks now, our public funds are gradually increasing, and if things go on like this, seven or eight months down the line, we should have a long-term base."
"That’s great, congratulations." Lina genuinely congratulated:
"Thank you, my lord." Lydia said with joy in her face: "I will definitely remember to notify you then."
"Right, our headquarters is at No. 6 Fox Street. You should be able to find it in the Guild information. If you encounter any problems, feel free to come ask us. We’ll do our best to help." Lina turned back to Catherine and asked, "Sis, is that alright?"
"Of course." Catherine replied seriously: "Your friends are our friends too, and they are always welcome to visit."
"And what about me, what about me?" Pannis leaned in and pointed to his nose: "I want to enjoy these privileges too."
"You?" The girls looked at Pannis with disdain: "You could, if you didn’t sneak off to the tavern to make friends with a bunch of drunks."
"Er, then forget it." Pannis tilted his head, weighed his options, and decisively ditched his request into the Mist Sea: "Going to the tavern is more important."
"Haha." Lydia covered her mouth and giggled: "My lords are funny indeed."
"Alright, you guys work hard, we have to get back to work too." Lina gave Lydia an encouraging gesture: "Keep going, see you around in the Holy City."
"Thank you, my lord, I’ll definitely work hard." Lydia watched Lina’s retreating figure gratefully and said with resolve.
"Haha, it feels good to inadvertently change someone’s future." After walking a distance, Lina spoke cheerfully, "If I could only be sure that such changes are either good or bad for the other person, I might fall in love with this."
"Better not," Catherine who was walking next to Lina advised, "Let’s leave the future to fate."
"Oh, it seems we’ve walked through the whole market." Pannis pointed to a narrow passageway made of wooden walls ahead: "That should lead to the resting area they mentioned."
"It should." Catherine glanced at the public timer erected in the middle of the market: "We have half an hour before the gathering time, let’s go and check it out."
After crossing the narrow passageway, there was an area almost as large as the market ahead. This part served as the resting area for the caravans’ accompanying personnel. The entire resting area was filled with tents, with a dozen or so scattered wooden huts in the central and outermost parts, their purposes unknown. In the very center of the resting area, there was the largest wooden house, which according to its area, could accommodate nearly a hundred people. Based on the sign on the house, it appeared to be a tavern temporarily run by the Business Federation. The four of them naturally walked into the tavern. At this time, lunchtime had just passed, so there were not many patrons, only seven or eight.
"Huh." As they passed by a female patron who was dining, Catherine suddenly furrowed her brow and whispered: "Strange, I feel like I’ve seen this woman somewhere."
"No idea, ah." The other three glanced at the dining woman surreptitiously and shook their heads: "Shouldn’t have seen her, right?"
"Perhaps I’ve met her somewhere before." Catherine said uncertainly: "With so many adventurers and mercenaries here, it’s inevitable to see familiar faces. Anyway, let’s go sit at the bar."
"Hey, wait a second." The female patron they were discussing just now suddenly called out to them: "I can’t believe I ran into you guys here."
"You are?" Catherine turned around, puzzled: "Do we know each other?"
"Of course." The woman stopped eating and carefully wiped corners of her mouth with a napkin, then said with a strange smile: "I need to rejoin my team." (To be continued.
