Chapter 273: Chapter 39 Secret Room_1
"Damn it!" In the secret room, the man under the Little Bear mask slammed his fist onto the table, his voice low and hoarse, "Failed again, we failed again! You are the strongest among my siblings, and yet you also failed? Oh, and sis, I didn’t forget you, you don’t need to point to yourself."
"We had no choice, our opponent was very strong too." The man in the Earth Wolf mask propped his legs high on the table, aimlessly fiddling with a silver coin, making it pop between his fingers. "The plan was as perfect as could be made, to be safe. We even had Duck who’s the most meticulous thinker we had involving her in the plan despite retiring... Hahaha, duckduck, hahaha, and still we failed. I can only blame it on the fact that our opponents’ experience is too vast, they’re prepared for every possible situation."
"Damn it, damn it!" The face under the Little Bear mask twisted hideously, sweat beading on his skin, fear filled his voice. "This can’t go on, we absolutely can’t let them enter the sphere of influence of the City of Freedom. Absolutely not."
"Given the experience and strength of our opponents, I’m afraid we don’t have much of a chance," said the man in the Frog mask, chugging a mug of ale, wiping his mouth with his sleeve. "Earth Wolf is right, they are quite formidable, especially that Catherine. Unless you can get me another Gold Rank captain, even with a full complement of two thousand mercenaries under my command, I can’t guarantee we would withstand her Charge."
"Is she that formidable?" Earth Wolf asked with interest. "I couldn’t see clearly from where I was. Was she really as exaggerated as you describe? She didn’t look anything special from afar."
"Well, there’s nothing special about her indeed, but, sigh, you wouldn’t understand. It’s her lack of uniqueness that evokes envy." Frog drank another large gulp of ale, admiringly remarked, "Her foundation is too solid. If you analyze her Charge that lasted for a dozen minutes, you would find that the entire process can be broken down into countless standard tactical moves. There isn’t a single meaningless or extraneous movement, and each one executed perfectly, with textbook precision and conciseness. Her posture, timing, and strength were all controlled just right. It’s hard to imagine how someone could achieve such a degree of accuracy—it must have taken her millions of repetitions. It’s truly frightening."
"What’s even more frightening is that we’re always one step behind; they’ve anticipated all of our plans," another man in a Fox mask was seated with a side profile, a dart flew from his hand and hit the target on the wall, "I was in charge of yesterday’s operation. Everyone did very well actually. The final failure was my responsibility, it was my plan that was not thorough enough."
"Fox, now is not the time to assign blame," a cool female voice emerged from under a Duck mask. "What we need to discuss now is our next move. We can’t be involved in action directly anymore, our strength now is half of what it was. The road ahead looks difficult, we need a plan."
"Speaking of that, I really don’t understand," a man in a yellow Fat Cat mask said, "Why do we need to stop them? The princess of the City of Knowledge is kind and beautiful, she is praised by everyone in the city. Why do you think her arriving here would cause a terrible disaster?"
"I don’t understand either," Big Dog’s calm voice was filled with confusion, "I’ve lived in the Holy City my whole life, and I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about her. How can such a person be associated with disaster?"
"None of you could possibly understand!" Little Bear screamed, agony in his voice, "I can already see the future, it’s a horrifying, desperate future without any light!"
"Uh, is it really that exaggerated?" The group of animals looked at the near-hysterical Little Bear with a headache, "Alright, alright, of course we believe you, do you have any good ideas then?"
"It seems there are no other choices," Little Bear’s gaze slowly grew gloomy, staring intently at the flickering candlelight in the secret room, constantly clenching his fists, his voice resolute, "It’s time for me to take action in person."
"Hey, bro, you’ve got to keep calm," the Prairie Wolf said, his head shaking to the beat of an unspoken tune, "If you’re out too, there’s no way for us to keep playing this game. You’ve got to think this through."
"At this point, there’s not much of a game left to play," another Tiger Shark said, his hand scratching at the sharp teeth on his mask, speaking gleefully, "We can’t hurt anyone, all our actions are restricted, it’s strange if we could keep playing."
"No, constant vigilance will eventually fail. The enemy can’t anticipate our every move, there will always be oversights," Prairie Wolf retorted, "If we’re more prudent, there should still be chances of success."
"Sure, they don’t know our plans, but they can guess," Tiger Shark was pessimistic, "I don’t think any plan can exceed Duck and Fox’s. I’m not optimistic about future operations, of course, I reserve my opinion. I’ll do my best when my help is needed."
"Enough," Little Bear regained his composure, slammed on the table and barked, "Tomorrow I will take things into my own hands. I have a surefire plan."
"The surest plan?" All eyes were on Little Bear. "What is it?"
"Don’t forget, based on the speed of the wedding party, they should pass through their territory tomorrow." Little Bear rested his chin on his hands, his elbows pressing on the table. The flickering candlelight reflected in his eyes, just like the flames burning in his heart, "I’ll use their hands to ensure their complete failure."
"Them?" Earth Wolf leapt up, pointing at Little Bear, "You can’t manipulate them, that’s too dangerous."
"I know the danger, but they pushed me to this point," Little Bear gritted his teeth, "But don’t worry, I’ll have Rabbit give them a ten-minute advance warning to escape. Their lives won’t be in danger."
"No, you’re misunderstanding," the Earth Wolf patted Little Bear’s shoulder, "I mean, you’re in danger. In my memory, anytime you get involved with them, you’re in bad luck because they don’t like you. You want to use them again this time? I think I can already see how it ends."
"Nonsense!" Little Bear, clearly stung, retorted angrily, "This time, I’m fully confident."
"You said the same last time too," Earth wolf’s gaze wandered, and he spoke in a strange tone, "And then the very next day you broke your leg during the action."
"That was an accident," Little Bear waved his hands excitedly, "Even deities have accidents."
"Oh, it was an accident," the Earth Wolf nodded, "An absolute certainty that ends up having an accident. I get it."
"Anyway, I’ve made up my mind," Little Bear pounded the table again, "This time I am determined to fight, risking everything, I need your support."
"You’re the leader, we support you of course," The Prairie Wolf yawned and swayed slightly as he stood up, "Since you’ve made up your mind, can we disperse? Just let us know when you need us."
"Let’s break," The frog finished the last drop of his beer, swaying on his large, sturdy body, opened the door of the secret room, and sunlight poured in, the outside was bright, "Ugh, I never understand why we have to meet in a windowless cabin during the day."
"It sets the atmosphere, hahaha," The Tiger Shark, just as tall, draped his arm around the frog’s shoulder, and removed the mask from his head, "Let’s go, brother, fancy another drink?"
"One drink isn’t enough," The frog also slung his arm over the Tiger Shark’s shoulder, laughing heartily, "We’re not stopping until we’ve drunk a barrel full, hahaha."
"Hmph, crude men, crude mercenaries," The Duck walked out, took out a portable vanity case, looked at herself in the mirror, touched up her makeup, then satisfied, put away the vanity case and left.
"Ahem," The fox coughed feebly, "Brother, I hate to rain on your parade, but I don’t think your plan is going to work."
"Why?" Little Bear, dissatisfied, "I’ve thought it through, it’s a very special timing."
"I know, it’s a particularly special period for them these next two months," the Fox nodded, "But you overlooked one thing, they will be very, very grumpy during this time. Even those who are usually familiar with them, if they provoke them during this period, they will be attacked mercilessly. Have you considered this?"
"Of course, I have," Little Bear said, "But I have Famiou, the fastest horse in all of Rhea, with it, they won’t be able to catch me no matter how grumpy they are."
"You underestimate their speed," The fox sighed, "Never mind, since you are determined, I won’t discourage you. Regardless of the result, at least you should be safe, at worst you’ll break a leg or an arm, consider it another lesson."
"Good luck, brother," The fox sighed, shaking his head, and got up. The last one to leave the secret room, he paused at the door, "We’re stepping out of it, we can only sit this one out. But we’re rooting for you internally, give it your best shoot."
"’Just’ breaking an arm or a leg?" Little Bear grumbled dissatisfied, "What’s with that ’another’ lesson?"
"My lord, don’t lose heart, I’ll always support you," Only the little rabbit remained by Little Bear’s side. When everyone left, she said to Little Bear, "I will do everything to defend your victory, even if it means facing all the horrors in the world, even if it means making enemies of the world."
"I knew it, only my sister is the most reliable," Little Bear stared at the little rabbit, his eyes filled with trust, "My sister, everything depends on your support."
"I fight for you, my lord," The rabbit and Little Bear hugged each other tightly, the bright sunlight poured in through the door of the secret room, illuminating this pair of sincere siblings.
