Chapter 261: Chapter 27 Burrower Worm_1

"Don’t bring it out yet." Catherine quickly yelled, "Something underground is about to attack. Let’s deal with it first before bringing it out. Otherwise, it might get damaged."

"Underground?" Even though Freya’s way of speaking didn’t change, her speaking rate did, "Enemies in the sky and underground? Is this fate’s arrangement? Filling my wedding journey with trial and hardship? No, I won’t just yield. Even if I have to face a multitude of blows, even if it means defying fate, I’ll reach out and firmly grasp my happiness, I..."

"Shut up." With Vivian checking the magic array on the gift cart, she couldn’t help but roar back, "You, a fool who only adds to the confusion. Put that brain of yours filled with poems and love to work and find a solution."

"Me? I’m just a fragile girl dreaming of love, facing such terror... Hey, don’t hit me." Seeing Vivian put down her work - or rather, she had finished her inspection, and was now walking towards her menacingly, Freya whimpered, and said with an aggrieved tone, "I really can’t do anything now. If I had enough parts and tools, I could make a simple pest repeller. But who could have expected that on the way to get married, what should be the happiest moment for a woman, wearing a pure white wedding dress, holding a colourful bouquet, with the blessings of friends and family... Don’t hit me, don’t hit me. I mean, who could expect to carry a bunch of parts and tools on such a journey? This is totally unreasonable."

"Didn’t you just make a bird trap?" Vivian suggested, "Dismantle it to make a pest repeller."

"Are you stupid? Those two devices aren’t the same, the pest repeller is a lot more complicated, and it requires several times more parts." Ever since Freya stopped pretending to be a good girl, she had obviously become a lot more active and happier, and her voice even sounded brighter, "Without parts, what do you expect me to do, magic one out of thin air?"

"If you can really magic one up, that will be great." Vivian huffed, "Go ahead and make one."

"Their relationship is really good." Pannis said in a numb tone, watching the quarreling pair with dead-fish-eyes, "But it would be perfect if they could pick a better time to argue."

"Actually, their relationship used to be the best, probably because they have some common research interests and topics." Catherine laughed behind her hand and said, "They always quarrel like this, you get used to it. Don’t worry, though they fight, they know their limits, they won’t let it affect the serious stuff."

"Take a look at this, you fool whose brain is filled with machinery and parts." After rummaging in her huge backpack for a while, Vivian struggled to pull out a weird device the size of a person’s head and placed it outside the carriage, "Guess what this is."

"Huh? A sonar pest repeller, a goblin product, that’s a good thing. Where did you get it?" Upon seeing the device that Vivian had produced, Freya seemed rather pleased, her voice was edging closer to the carriage door, as if she was about to jump out, "Never thought your brain didn’t get fried by all the magic, to come up with such a rare item."

"Stop, are you naive?" Vivian placed her hand on the carriage door, "You want to get out just like that? Don’t want to get married anymore? If you go crazy, don’t drag us into your madness, you’ll regret it later."

Freya paused and sighed disappointedly, "Yeah, I’m getting married, it’s not like before, I almost thought I was still in the old days. Fine, Linda, help me move this machine inside, it’s a bit heavy, but you should be able to lift it."

The carriage door opened a crack, and a clever-looking girl in her late teens crawled out. The three young girls in the adventuring team had seen her a few times before. She was Freya’s personal maid and playmate Linda. Linda scurried out of the carriage, defiantly sticking her tongue out at Vivian, heaved the machine up with difficulty, and ran back to the carriage. Before closing the door behind her, she made a face at Vivian.

"This thing works." The machine had just been moved in, and Freya’s excitement was audible, "I need a few minutes to modify it a bit to boost its power. The current output isn’t enough, the range is too narrow. A little tweak, and no bug would dare come near."

"If the power increases, doesn’t that mean it will drain more?" This was the first thing Catherine thought of, "Then maybe we shouldn’t modify it."

"Oh my God, sis, you’re still like this." Freya said with a mix of laughter and tears, "No matter how much it drains, I will supply the crystal. You don’t have to spend a dime, you’re so greedy."

"It’s not like you’re handing out money or anything." Catherine muttered in a low voice, her dissatisfaction seeping through her words, "Instead of wasting time with these modifications, you might as well just give me the money. You clearly have no idea how to be frugal. Just burning through money like it’s nothing...what a waste."

Everyone gracefully pretended not to hear her complaints. They busied themselves with their own preparations for the upcoming battle. Even Vivian stopped bickering with Freya and pulled out a bulging sack, handing it to Pannis with a secretive air. Pannis peered into the bag, his face lighting up with a wicked grin as he nodded his approval at Vivian. "Heh heh heh, you’ve come prepared with some great stuff. Don’t worry about it, leave it to me."

"How long until we start?" Lina asked, kneeling on the ground with a silver magic book opened on her bent knee. She languidly flipped through the pages, "I’m ready whenever."

"I’m all set too." Vivian claimed, giving each magic array one final check, "All preparations are complete."

"Me too." Catherine threw her shield and weapon aside, took off her helmet and began warming up her joints, "Ready for action whenever."

Seeing the girls effortlessly fall into position and collaborate on an established plan without any discussion, Pannis marveled silently at the implicit understanding this group of people had cultivated. Little did he realize, others found him to be equally adept in his ability to tacitly cooperate with the group.

"It’s almost here, about two minutes max." Pannis, with his eyes closed and ear pressed to the ground, intercepted signals originating from the depths below. Suddenly, his eyes flicked open and he pointed at a gift cart, shouting, "Over here!"

"Catherine, help me." Vivian shouted, and was swiftly lifted by Catherine and hoisted onto the cart. Crouched by the cart, Vivian began activating the magic array, yelling, "I’m ready!"

"Lift." Catherine slid under the cart and with an immense grunt of effort, lifted it slowly from below. It was a sight impressive even to those who knew the merchandise onboard was relatively lightweight despite being high in volume. Between the weight of the merchandise and the cart, it would normally require a Gold Rank professional to lift, let alone lift and carry from an awkward angle. However, with Vivian’s weight reducing magic aiding her, Catherine hoisted the cart and jumped, clearing several obstacles before placing the cart in an empty spot on the other side of the battle field.

Just as Catherine moved the cart away, the ground surged upward and a large mouth shot out from the ground, snapping ferociously at thin air. It might be more accurate to say, a large mouth, as the rest of its features were still under ground. This was a gigantic wormlike creature, not unlike the earthworms from earlier, except this one was about a meter long and as round and thick as a watermelon. The top part of its body was a giant mouth, filled to the brim with tiny, spiral teeth that made onlookers shift uncomfortably.

"So, it’s that kind of creature." While still managing the stability of her magic array, Vivian didn’t forget to express her astonishment, "A burrower worm, the killer of the wastes."

The burrower worm was a rare creature on the Yarran Continent, not because they were few in number, but because they lived hundreds of meters beneath the ground, out of sight. The creature, a distant relative of the cave worm, thrived in plain areas and ate small plants and animals from the earth. Their skin secreted special fluid that dissolved soil and rock, making it easier for them to burrow through.

Theoretically, these creatures should have no impact on humans but every July and August, during their reproduction phase, the burrower worms would lay their eggs near the surface layer of the earth. During this period, they feed excessively to accommodate their nutritional needs and begin attacking land creatures, including humans. Their attacks are abrupt, leaving no room for precautionary measures. They’re lethal to humans and are hence known as ’wasteland killers’.

"Divine Spell, Terrain Change." Lina, who had been prepared for a while, slammed her hammer into the ground. Under the influence of her spell, the rocks below became hard and contracted, trapping the burrower worm on the surface, unable to go back down nor move around.

"Heh heh heh heh." Pannis reached back into his bag, pulling out three objects the size of a child’s fist with a wicked grin on his face. With a seemingly casual toss, he pitched the objects into the burrower worm’s gaping mouth.

"Boom." A thunderous sound echoed across the surface, the unfortunate burrower worm had to bear the brunt of swallowing three high-energy magic bombs. The explosion created shockwaves trapped within the worm’s tough skin and the surrounding earth, thus unable to disperse outwards. It rapidly moved down the creature’s body, tearing through the worm’s internal organs, turning them to mince.

The burrower worm is a hearty creature, but its anatomical structure makes it vulnerable to high-impact internal attacks such as this one. With the majority of its muscles destroyed, the worm didn’t even have the strength to writhe in its death throes before it finally breathed its last. (To be continued.
