Chapter 256: Chapter 22 Death Weaver_1
"All seemingly accidental occurrences, in fact, hide inevitable factors behind them." After watching the entire magic performance by Pannis and Vivian, Lina uttered while sitting upright, "This is the exact words of Philosopher Mira. Thus, there is nothing in this world that is solely coincidental, it’s just the reasons people find for self-consolation."
"Are you saying that someone is manipulating things behind the scenes?" Captain Ayrland was taken aback by Lina’s words and said in disbelief, "That’s hardly likely, isn’t it? Everything seems normal."
"I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of a certain profession." Pannis sat back down and said leisurely, while resting his chin on his hand. "This profession is extremely rare and obscure, to the point that many have never even heard of it."
"Wait, that heap of sugar balls over there." Captain Ayrland pointed at the vehicle crew and said, "Don’t we need to get rid of them? Isn’t it pretty risky to leave them lying around like that?"
"There’s no rush, it will be a while before the temperature drops to a critical point." Pannis spoke slowly, "And dealing with it is simple. We just need to move the vehicle out of the way later and douse the area with water."
"Is it really that simple?" Captain Ayrland sighed in relief, "Alright then, what were you saying earlier? A rare profession?"
"Yes, a very rare profession." Pannis said, "It’s a branch of the assassin profession, one that’s pretty detested. Almost everyone hates them because they’re such a headache."
"What exactly is it?" Catherine asked, "I’ve never heard of this kind of profession."
"Death Weavers." Pannis softly uttered this name, "They are seen as the weavers of death."
"We really never heard of it before." The three girls shook their heads in unison to show their unfamiliarity. Catherine asked, "Is the key feature of these professionals to create accidents like the one earlier?"
"No, it isn’t about creating accidents." Pannis emphasized, "They craft countless coincidences so that their targets die within these fabricated circumstances. In most cases, the victims die without even knowing how they died. Naturally, those surrounding the victim would be clueless as well."
"Can you elaborate on that?" Catherine furrowed her eyebrows, "This profession sounds incredibly odd."
"Lina was right. There is inevitability behind every coincidence, just like earlier." Pannis began to explain from the beginning, "Suppose we trace back the event, we can find the origin. Firstly, why did the vehicles park orderly there, Captain Ayrland?"
"To block the wind." answered Ayrland, "Look at our camp, there’s the wall of a mill providing shelter not far from the left side, but there’s nothing on the right side. The wind is quite strong during winter nights, so we should use the carriages to create a makeshift wall against the wind, right?"
"Precisely, that’s the inevitability." said Pannis, "As long as you choose this place as the campsite, the carriages will inevitably line up in this direction. Now, the village head consented to our usage of the field near the mill as the campsite. But, why did you choose this place?"
"This place is spacious and flat." Ayrland spoke, "This was the drying field used by the mill before, it is most suitable as a campsite. Okay, I understand now, this is also inevitable."
"The next step, we used barbecue as food." asked Pannis, "Do you remember what motivated this?"
"The motivation? We just happened to see a sheep on the roadside while we were negotiating with the village head." Ayrland said, "I was worried that we might not be able to secure food through hunting once we enter the wilderness, and then we’d have to rely on dry bread to stave off hunger, which could lower the team’s morale. I suggested that we have a good meal together tonight. So, was this also inevitable?"
"If you hadn’t seen that sheep, would you have proposed to buy one from the village head? You probably wouldn’t have thought of it." asserted Pannis, "So, the incident originated from the fact that you saw a sheep. But why was there a single sheep there? Don’t forget the time, it was getting dark and the herders should have driven the livestock back inside their fences. It’s unlikely to randomly encounter one on the street, but we happened to do so. Do you truly believe the appearance of that sheep was a coincidence? Don’t forget, even the village head couldn’t recognize whose sheep it was, so, he took the money for the sheep on the owner’s behalf."
"So, someone bought this sheep in advance and placed it along our inevitable route, ensuring that we would successfully buy it?" Ayrland pondered aloud, "Is that the idea? But how did they know we were going to roast it?"
"There was no need to roast it, any cooking method would have sufficed, it didn’t even have to be this particular sheep. I believe that even if we hadn’t been successfully drawn in by this sheep, there would have been plenty of other things hinting that we should buy some fresh livestock for dinner. As long as we didn’t buy packaged meat from the butcher, whatever we cooked would leave behind a significant amount of leftovers," Pannis explained. "These remains and their enticing smell would easily attract dogs from various households. This was their first step."
"Alright, no need to keep explaining," Ayrland spoke in a deep voice. "Your reasoning does make sense."
"This is how Death Weavers operate," Pannis stated. "They rarely fight, they prefer to use all sorts of methods to create coincidences like the one we experienced today in order to complete their tasks. Those unfamiliar with this profession often believe that they’ve inadvertently brought about their own problems, but in reality, each step has been carefully woven by the Death Weaver. Being targeted by a high-level Death Weaver is horrifying. Even if you know you’re being watched, you still wouldn’t be able to discern which events are naturally occurring and which are carefully laid traps. Everything you do could potentially lead to your death. Unless you can identify and kill them, but locating a Weaver is extremely challenging, as they are exceptional at hiding, making it nearly impossible. Therefore, some of their targets don’t end up dead, but driven insane."
"Is there no solution?" Catherine asked, frustrated, "Having someone like that following us is really annoying, we have to find a way to deal with it."
"It’s difficult to solve, but at least this Weaver is a novice," Pannis said. "The one we’ve encountered is probably just a beginner Death Weaver. The coincidences they’ve arranged aren’t natural enough, and the traps they’ve set aren’t sufficiently covert or interconnected. This is a fortunate thing amidst our misfortune."
"This is just the lowest level of Weaver?" Catherine asked in surprise. "I can’t even begin to imagine how terrifying a powerful Weaver would be."
"I’ve heard about a Weaver who once had a classic operation," Pannis said. "They were tasked with assassinating multiple targets, over a dozen people. After three months, they managed to kill all of them, each death suffered was due to a coincidence. After four people died, the rest became vigilant. Of course, they were unaware that a Death Weaver was after them; they thought they had offended the Grimreaper. To stay alive, those remaining took every measure to ensure their own safety. However, the Weaver’s traps couldn’t be avoided by simply being careful, and they continued to gradually lose members. When it was down to just the final four, they utilized all resources available to them. They were protected by guards 22 hours a day; one even sought shelter from a Demigod. Unfortunately, it was all in vain. Despite narrowly escaping a few lethal traps, they eventually were caught within the Webb of death. Not even the protection of a Demigod could save them; all four perished."
"Thankfully the Weaver we’re dealing with is relatively weak," Ayrland said worryingly. "But I don’t understand why they would target us?"
"It seems like Odin didn’t mention this to you before we left," Pannis began to bluff again. "He received information that an admirer of Freya, unable to cope with the news of her impending marriage, wanted to create some disturbances to prevent the wedding from taking place. I suspect the Weaver we’ve encountered was hired by this admirer. Therefore, you see, their target is the gifts, not our lives."
"No," Ayrland thought for a moment, then suddenly stood up and turned to leave. "I need to clarify this with the kids. Continuing like this, unaware of what’s going on, is too dangerous. I need them to stay vigilant and be prepared for any unexpected situations."
"Make sure not to reveal the truth when rallying them," Catherine added. "The guildmaster has warned us many times not to create a public scandal, as it would greatly affect Freya’s emotional state. That’s the last thing he wants to see."
"I understand." Ayrland paused momentarily before continuing to leave. "Don’t worry, I won’t let them find out the truth."
"Phew, Pannis, thank goodness you noticed," Catherine sighed after Ayrland left. "Otherwise, we might’ve failed our mission on the first day. How did you realize?"
"You mentioned earlier that the opposition wants to prevent the wedding, and the simplest way to do that is to make sure we don’t reach the City of Freedom on time," Pannis explained. "So, I immediately thought of the gift cart. Traditionally, these carefully selected gifts are essential to the wedding. Losing them would require a lot of time to replace. If I were them, I would definitely choose to destroy the gifts to prevent the wedding - it’s simple and effective. That’s why I started to pay close attention to the caravan. Just then, someone dropped something and it shattered, which of course caught my attention. Even so, I didn’t expect our opponent to be a Death Weaver, not until I remembered that there’s a type of candy with strange properties. By considering all the information available, I was able to guess our opponent’s identity and methods."
"So the task of defending against the Weaver’s plots falls solely on you?" Catherine said helplessly. "We have no experience dealing with this profession and have no idea what to look out for."
"Don’t worry, I’ll always be vigilant." Pannis nodded. "As soon as I notice any danger, I’ll inform you immediately."
"I appreciate your efforts," Catherine patted Pannis’ shoulder. "For the sake of protecting Freya, keep up the good work."
"For Freya?" Pannis suddenly grimaced. "If the task reward was her speaking in a normal manner, I might be somewhat motivated. But as it stands, I can’t seem to gather any enthusiasm."
