Chapter 253: Chapter 19 The Princess’s Love Affair_1
"Did you two grow up together?" Catherine asked curiously, "I never heard you mention it."
"There’s nothing to say, I didn’t even like him back then," Freya said candidly, "We hadn’t seen each other for years, keeping in touch merely as ordinary friends."
"Oh~~~, a romantic relationship between pen pals then," Catherine said, with an expression as if she understood it all, "Well, this is indeed a rare successful case."
"That’s not true at all," Freya’s voice was filled with petulance, enough to paint a vivid picture in the listener’s mind of a petulant young maiden stomping her foot, "We were just regular friends."
"And then?" Catherine inquired, "How did you become lovers?"
"You know, I’ve always wanted to seek a real love," Freya spoke tranquilly, "In my heart, love should be a bittersweet memory, an intoxicating dream that you refuse to wake up from, real love should..."
"Thump," the sound of a staff striking heavily.
"Um, simply put, I’ve always wanted to experience a true romance," Freya quickly returned to normal, "But most of the men who surrounded me had ulterior motives which were unbearable. So, I kept searching for the ideal relationships, without success. Eventually, I thought, perhaps my status and appearance was to blame? So, I started looking for love through letters; this way I could hide my appearance and my identity."
"Hehe, hehe," Catherine chuckled, "I think you just had too much free time when studying."
"No, I’m serious, I really wanted to find someone who loves me and who I love," Freya said earnestly, "I think the most important things in life are affection, friendship, and love. I have familial love, I have friendships, but love, oh, love is forever elusive in my sight like clouds on the horizon, forever beyond..."
"Thump."
"Oh, because I have been looking for such a person, in the midst of intensive studies, I started to write letters and communicate with many strangers," Freya continued normally, "But, none of those men were truly interested in a pure romance, their intentions were merely flirtation. When I began to get desperate, my love appeared."
"Your love?" Even though Lina wore an indifferent expression, her ears had been pricked up listening for a long time, she couldn’t help but ask, "You mean Wesker?"
"Of course, my Wesker, my only lover in my heart," Freya said joyfully, "His presence opened a window in my closed heart, bringing warm sunlight that filtered through the engraved transparent crystal on the window, bringing intoxicating warmth..."
"Thump!"
"In short, Wesker and I began to correspond by pure chance," Freya said, "Even though we didn’t know who each other were, we enjoyed each other’s company. The most exciting thing was to ask the postman if my mail arrived, I would run to the door at the sound of the postman, and if a letter arrived, I’d be happy all day, if it was late, I’d be lost and unsure."
"Hmm, I understand that feeling," Catherine smiled warmly, "I felt the same when I was waiting for my parents to come home when I was little, I’d run to the door full of anticipation at any hint of activity."
"Yes, that’s it," Freya said, "So, I..."
"Thump."
"Hey, I didn’t say anything yet." One could imagine Freya complaining in the carriage, holding her head, "Vivian, why did you knock again?"
"Sorry, I let my hand slip," Vivian answered confidently, "I didn’t hold the staff steady. Don’t mind it, please continue."
"You’re still a fool after two years," Freya muttered irritably, then continued, "Later, our letters became more frequent, our conversations more congenial. I discovered he wasn’t like those disgusting men that only cared about my status and looks. When I told him I was poor and unattractive, he didn’t care. He told me that a person’s soul is their most important part, and that a beautiful heart makes any appearance beautiful. I thought perhaps I’d finally found the man of my dreams, who loved me not for my looks or status."
"That sounds wonderful," Catherine nodded, her gentle smile resurfacing, "After so many years of waiting, to finally have results, congratulations. But you both didn’t know each other’s identities at the time, right?"
"Yes," Freya made a soft sound of agreement, the slight nasal twang in her voice making her sound irresistibly charming, "At the time, we didn’t know. But after a while, about two months, we revealed our identities in a letter by accident, discovering that we were each other’s childhood playmates. Catherine, you know how incredible it was? Out of almost two billion humans, the letters we randomly sent ended up in each other’s hands. Oh, it must have been Deity’s orchestration, for us to meet each other amidst the sea of humans, in..."
"Thump." This time was not by accident.
"Oh, we just accidentally revealed our identities," Freya simply stated, "At that time, I didn’t realize I had fallen for him, I just felt a flutter in my heart. Then not long after, he and his father came over seeking my hand in marriage. At that moment I finally knew, he was my other half, the most important man in my life after my father. While he professed his love to my father, I was hiding in my room, eavesdropping. I heard every word, I understood his deep love and infatuation for me. He said he couldn’t imagine life without me and was willing to spend every day of his life with me. He wished my father would give me to him, promising he would make me happy for the rest of my life. I couldn’t contain myself, bursting out of hiding, professing my love for him, I was willing to marry him. My father happily agreed. And when he saw me suddenly, he was so shocked, mouth agape, unable to utter a word. That silly man. He still hadn’t snapped out of his joy even when, shyly, I retreated back into my room."
"You are truly fortunate," Catherine said with a hint of envy, biting her lower lip, "To encounter such a coincidental and lucky event, it makes one a bit jealous."
"Humph, boring, not fun at all," Lina finally sated her curiosity after hearing the story, but continued to carry her hammer over her shoulder with a stern face, posing as if holding a sword. The envy and yearning in her eyes couldn’t be concealed, after all, they were all girls, and it’s natural to have unrealistic dreams and envy for such a beautiful love story that usually happens in tales, "I’m not interested. I’m going to prepare the beddings for tonight."
"Before you ran away out of shyness, did you manage to hear the outcome?" Mr. Pannis finally found an opportunity to cut in, "In other words, what was Kara’s reaction when Wesker proposed?"
"You must be... Mr. Pannis," Freya’s once gentle voice suddenly sounded distant and indifferent, "I’ve heard about you from Catherine. But, why are you standing so far away?"
In reality, Catherine and the other two have been surrounding the carriage door, standing so close to the carriage that no one had noticed that Mr. Pannis was actually standing so far away, around ten meters away. He had to shout to communicate.
"Oh, nothing, haha," Mr. Pannis laughed awkwardly, "I just feel hot, it’s cooler here, yes, very cool."
"Very... cool?" Freya curiously peered out of the carriage window at the sturdy frozen ice in the river near the mill, "Yes, indeed, it’s very cool."
"Pfft," Catherine couldn’t help but laugh. Though Freya didn’t understand, Catherine and the others knew very well why Mr. Pannis was standing so far away. Ever since he understood Freya’s way of thinking and speech, he firmly decided to maintain distance from her, to never approach her within three meters, due to his fear that her mental mannerisms might be contagious, "Freya, he’s just a fool, don’t mind him. But we’re curious too, what was Kara’s reaction? Did he support your relationship?"
"I didn’t see," Freya replied with some difficulty, "At that time, my eyes were only for Wesker, I didn’t notice Kara’s reaction. But based on what my father told me later, Kara and Wesker left contentedly, so they should’ve approved. Why? Is there a problem?"
"No, no problem," Catherine shook her head vigorously, "I was just worried that Wesker’s parents might oppose your love, and it might affect your future happiness."
"I don’t think so, Catherine, you’re overthinking," Freya’s voice was once again full of happiness, "After all, Kara came with Wesker to propose to my father. If he opposed, he wouldn’t have done that. Besides, Wesker and I truly love each other, why would he oppose? They have been friends for years, there’s even less chance of him opposing. Don’t you agree?"
"Yes, you make sense, perhaps I was overthinking," Catherine nodded thoughtfully, lightly knocking on the carriage door, "It’s getting late, we should go help with dinner preparations. Being idle like this would simply invite trouble. I know you, these past few days you must have been too excited to sleep properly. Rest now, don’t worry, I’ll ensure your safe arrival at the City of Freedom, we’ll make sure this hard-earned love bears fruit."
"Strange," Catherine spoke doubtfully to Mr. Pannis after leaving Freya’s carriage, "Maybe our guess was wrong, perhaps Kara isn’t the one who sent the threatening letter. Freya made a valid point, if Kara was against it, there’d be no need for him to bring Wesker to propose, so theoretically, Kara should agree."
"What if he agreed at first then changed his mind later?" Mr. Pannis pondered.
"He’s a demigod, not a fickle-minded three-year-old. They couldn’t possibly change their mind on a whim over a matter of such import," Catherine rolled her eyes at Mr. Pannis.
"Some demigods behave even worse than three-year-old children," Mr. Pannis shrugged, appearing nonchalant.(To be continued. If you like this work, please come to qidian.com to vote, boost and support. Your support is my greatest motivation. For mobile users, please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
